How to Log in to Your Spectrum Router (and Which Settings to Update)

How to connect your Spectrum router

If you’re setting up your Spectrum router for the first time, follow these steps to get your router up and running.

1. Connect the coax cable to the cable outlet and your modem
2. Plug in the modem and the router

If one of these default IP addresses does not work to access your router’s settings login page, you can also find it using your computer (as long as you’re connected to the router at the time).

How to find your router’s IP address on Windows

Here’s how to find your router’s IP address on Windows.

1. Open the command prompt by searching cmd or going to the Start menu and selecting Command Prompt.
2. Type ipconfig and hit enter.
3. Your Wi-Fi router’s IP address will be displayed under “Wireless LAN Adapter Wi-Fi.” If you’re connected via ethernet, the router IP address will be located in the “Ethernet Adapter Ethernet” section.

How to find your router’s IP address on macOS

If you’re on a Mac, you can use these steps to locate your router’s IP address.

• Open System Preferences.
• Select Network.
• Make sure “Wi-Fi” is selected in the left column.
• Your IP address is shown below the Status section on the right side.

Enter your router’s username and password

To log in to your router, use an internet browser and type in the IP address of your router into the search bar. This will bring up a prompt to enter the router’s username and password. You can find common wireless router usernames and passwords below, or there may be a sticker on the back of your router with default login information listed.

Network name and password

Your network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password are often one of the first things you’ll change when getting a new router.

Your network name is what you will see when looking for available Wi-Fi connections. You want your network name to be easily identifiable, but you don’t want it to include personal information because anyone in the area may be able to see it in their available connections.

You may have multiple network names to update — especially if you have a dual-band or tri-band router that uses both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz frequency. Make sure you rename each one during your initial setup. You can also label them “2.4” and “5” to help easily identify which wireless network is which.

Your network password is an important part of keeping your home network secure, so you want to make sure that the password is strong. You may also want to change your network password if you think it may have been jeopardized.

Security mode

Your Spectrum router may also have different security settings that can make your internet connection more secure. There are several encryption types your router may use to help keep your network safe.

Newer routers may use Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) or Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3). These encryption protocols are the most secure. When setting up a new router, access the security settings and make sure that encryption is turned on and that your router is using WPA2 or WPA3.
