How we test and rate identity theft protection services

Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 10+ identity theft protection services using a consistent process. We sign up several days before formal testing begins, giving each service time to populate our dashboard with real monitoring data.

Then, we evaluate each product across six areas:

  • Identity and credit monitoring (30%): We assess how comprehensive the service is, specifically checking for SSN monitoring, financial account monitoring, credit monitoring across all three bureaus, and more.
  • Basics (20%): We review how many adults and children can be covered, as well as the maximum identity theft insurance value offered.
  • Editor's score (20%): We evaluate the service's ease of use, security practices, the company's breach history, and anything else that's not addressed in the other categories.
  • Value (15%): We compare the lowest and highest monthly plan prices against what's actually included at each tier. We also check if the service offers a free trial.
  • Customer service (10%): We determine if there are several options available for human support.
  • Extras (5%): We check whether the service includes additional tools we find valuable: dark web monitoring, social media monitoring, data breach alerts, and lost wallet protection.

We retest all identity theft protection services at least once a year. To learn more about how we test, read our full identity theft protection testing methodology here.

Aura is another popular identity theft prevention tool that monitors your credit and identity. Like LifeLock, it offers a whole suite of features, like:

  • Home title monitoring
  • Monitoring with all three credit bureaus
  • A virtual private network (VPN)

These features are available with all Aura plans, but LifeLock only offers home title monitoring on its Total plan.

What Aura does better than LifeLock

LifeLock Core offers two-bureau credit monitoring, while the Advanced and Total plans include all three bureaus. If you want three-bureau credit monitoring at any plan level without upgrading, Aura offers it across all tiers, making it one of the best credit monitoring services available.

An area where Aura takes it a step further than LifeLock is child ID theft protection. Many identity monitoring services cover children by monitoring their online identities. However, Aura offers a Safe Gaming feature that monitors cyberbullying and sends geo-alerts for sex offenders in the area. It also offers parental controls that help with content filtering and screen time management.

What LifeLock does better than Aura

While Aura offers up to $5 million in insurance protection, it caps at $1 million per adult. LifeLock, on the other hand, offers up to $3 million in identity theft insurance per adult. LifeLock also offers more robust identity monitoring than Aura, as it includes social media monitoring across all plan tiers.

Learn more about how Aura compares to LifeLock in our side-by-side comparison.

Star rating summary

Aura has a high star rating of 4.8 due to our reliable and intuitive experience with the service, budget-friendly range of prices, and multiple support methods.

Aura received a lower score in the features category because it lacks social media monitoring and data breach alerts.

SPECIAL OFFER: Save Up to 33% Today
  • ID theft protection service with up to $2M in insurance on the Standard plan and up to $4M on the Elite plan
  • Elite plan adds up to $100K in scam and ransomware protection, plus dedicated scam resolution specialists
  • Scans texts, emails, URLs, and images you upload to flag potential scams and phishing emails

OmniWatch is a newer identity theft protection service that's a solid pick if you want straightforward, affordable protection without paying for features you won't use.

On the insurance side, plans include up to $2 million in identity theft coverage on the Standard plan and up to $4 million on the Elite. You'll also receive up to $50,000 in scam and ransomware protection.

What OmniWatch does better than LifeLock

OmniWatch includes scam scanning tools on all plans, while LifeLock only adds scam support starting at the Advanced plan ($16.67/mo). OmniWatch also offers higher identity theft insurance, providing up to $4 million on Elite. LifeLock has a $3 million ceiling on its most expensive plan.

What LifeLock does better than OmniWatch

LifeLock offers far broader monitoring, including social media, financial transactions, Social Security Number (SSN), phone takeover, and more. Its scam protection is also backed by a more established platform, with dedicated scam support agents on the Advanced and Total plans.

OmniWatch's Family plan covers only two adults with no option to add children. On the other hand, LifeLock's family plans cover two adults and up to 10 children.

Learn more about how OmniWatch compares to LifeLock in our side-by-side comparison.

Star rating summary

OmniWatch has a solid star rating of 4.5 thanks to its strong feature set, generous identity theft insurance, and responsive customer support. It excels at scam protection, offering built-in tools that help detect phishing attempts, even on mobile devices.

OmniWatch received lower scores in the experience category because its identity monitoring is limited compared to competitors. It doesn't yet cover financial activity, social media, or USPS address changes. It also received a lower score in the value category because it offers a 14-day money-back guarantee instead of a free trial.

PROMOTION: Save Up to 73% on Ultra Plans
  • Offers the best balance between comprehensive protection and affordable plans
  • Advanced online protection with included tools like password manager, ad blocker, and more
  • Robust identity monitoring services, including bank transactions and address changes

One of Identity Guard's biggest advantages is that it offers a robust feature set at a lower monthly cost for individuals than many competitors. Identity Guard offers dark web monitoring, a password manager, and more in all three tiers of its plans.

Identity Guard main dashboard

What Identity Guard does better than LifeLock

For individual-level plans, Identity Guard offers lower prices than LifeLock for individual plans. If you want to protect the whole family, Identity Guard's family plans cover five adults and unlimited kids, while LifeLock's plans are limited to two adults and 10 kids.

The prices are cheaper too. The Value Family plan starts at $14.99/mo, while LifeLock Advanced for Family starts at $30.00/mo.

What LifeLock does better than Identity Guard

A con of Identity Guard is its limitations in identity restoration services. LifeLock offers identity theft insurance with coverage between $1.05 million and $3 million per adult (depending on the plan) and U.S.-based identity restoration specialists.

Although it offers up to $1 million in identity theft insurance, Identity Guard doesn't mention identity restoration services on its site. After conducting some research, we found that Identity Guard will cover the cost of a lawyer and other remediation fees, but there doesn't appear to be assistance with recovering from identity fraud.

And while LifeLock offers at least two-bureau credit monitoring in every tier, Identity Guard doesn't offer credit monitoring at all with its Value plan.

Learn more about how Identity Guard compares to LifeLock in our detailed comparison.

Star rating summary

Identity Guard has a high star rating of 4.6 due to its affordable pricing, multiple monitoring features, and various customer support methods.

Identity Guard received a lower score in the experience category because there are large gaps in protection with the starter plan. Plus, restoration services are limited to the highest tier plans.

IDShield
  • Guaranteed identity restoration services with $3 mil in insurance coverage (3x more than most competitors)
  • Full identity protection features included on ALL plans
  • Advanced financial monitoring, including credit reports, transactions, loans, and more

Unlike many competitors that limit features in lower-tier plans, IDShield nearly all core features across its plans. You can even get a VPN, password manager, and antivirus software, all of which are not included with LifeLock plans. With IDShield, you'll have comprehensive cybersecurity to protect your device from hackers, malware, identity thieves, and other threats.

IDShield security featuers

What IDShield does better than LifeLock

IDShield is also great because it's affordable compared to competitors. It offers two tiers for individual plans: one-bureau credit monitoring for $14.95/mo or three-bureau credit monitoring for $19.95/mo.

The family plan is $29.95/mo for one-bureau credit monitoring and $34.95/mo for three-bureau credit monitoring. It includes your spouse and all dependents under 18 living with you. This makes it much cheaper than LifeLock, especially because it offers more features in even its lowest tiers.

What LifeLock does better than IDShield

However, IDShield's login is confusing. If you log in from IDShield's website, you'll find one dashboard, while IDShield.cloud provides a completely different one. We also had issues using the registered offenders tab. We had to restart our browsers each time we accessed it.

Our experience with IDShield's customer support was also lacking. When we called, the customer service agent was short with us. And the only option to cancel your account is to call customer service.

Learn why LifeLock outperforms IDShield in our detailed review.

Star rating summary

IDShield has a high star rating of 4.5 due to its extensive protection features available across plans and user-friendly interface.

IDShield received a lower score in the features category because it doesn't include credit reports, but it does guide you on how to access them. IDShield also received a lower score in the customer service category because its phone support isn't 24/7.

How to pick the right identity theft protection for you

LifeLock is one of the best-known names in identity theft protection for a reason, though it might not be the best choice for everyone.

There are many factors to consider when choosing alternative identity theft protection services, including:

  • Pricing
  • The number of people being covered
  • The amount of insurance available
  • Whether they offer credit monitoring services

If you're on a budget, opting for the most affordable option may be all you need to gain some peace of mind. But if protecting your online information is your main priority, then going with more expensive options will likely net you more valuable features. You'll need to identify which features are most important to you before choosing a service.

How to cancel your LifeLock subscription

You can cancel your LifeLock subscription by calling 1-800-LIFELOCK (543-3562) or by using its 24/7 live chat.

If you wish to cancel through your member portal, sign in to your account and then open the My Subscriptions tab. There will be an option to cancel there.
