LifeLock can be more expensive than most identity theft protection services, though the Total tier's feature set helps justify the gap. Here are some pricing examples from a few popular competitors.
- Identity Guard: Starting from $8.99/mo for individuals
- Aura: Starting from $9.00/mo for individuals
- OmniWatch: Starting from $7.99/mo for individuals

Bonus features
Although LifeLock is primarily focused on identity monitoring and credit features, all LifeLock plans also include data removal services, to keep your personally identifiable information off the internet and help maintain your privacy.
The Advanced and Total plans include scam reimbursement and scam support as well. This includes a virtual assistant that can help you identify scams, recovery support, and reimbursement for eligible scam-related losses.
Identity monitoring
Monitoring services provide alerts to help you act quickly to keep your identity protected. LifeLock provides these types of alerts (availability may depend on your specific plan):
- Identity monitoring: Monitors suspicious activity involving your personal information, such as your name and SSN.
- Credit monitoring: Monitors and alerts you to credit inquiries or changes to your credit report(s).
- Dark web monitoring: Monitors the dark web for leaked or potentially exposed personal information, which could include data breaches of companies or websites where you have information stored.
- Address change monitoring: Monitors for any USPS address changes.
- Transaction monitoring: Monitors suspicious activity related to linked credit, checking, and savings accounts
Phone takeover monitoring: Monitors for any suspicious activity regarding your phone number.
- Social media monitoring: Monitors your linked social media accounts for any suspicious activity that might indicate an account takeover. Also monitors for inappropriate content.
- Home title monitoring: Monitors for any suspicious activity with your home title.
We found the dashboard well-organized, with alerts, credit freezes, restoration, and monitored info each broken into their own tab, plus a summary view on the main page.
We also like that you can customize the types of information you want to monitor by simply adding and editing the information straight from your account. For example, your name, Social Security number (SSN), and date of birth are automatically monitored but you can also add your email, address, phone number, and other personal information.
Credit monitoring
LifeLock provides two-bureau credit monitoring on the Core plan, and three-bureau credit monitoring on the Advanced and Total plans.
LifeLock uses credit monitoring to alert you if any new credit inquiries are made in your name, and you can view a list of inquiries in the Credit Services tab on the dashboard. If you don’t recognize an inquiry, you can dispute it by selecting “Report an Inaccuracy.”
In the past, we've had issues setting up credit monitoring. Multiple areas of the dashboard prompted us to activate it but every time we tried, LifeLock led us to an error page and required that we call support.
This has only happened once before, so we're not too concerned. If you have any issues during your testing, LifeLock provides a 60-day money-back guarantee so you have plenty of time to reach out for a refund.
Credit reports and scores
With LifeLock Core, you'll get unlimited access to your Equifax credit report and score, meaning you can check your report on a daily basis rather than once per year. Access to other credit reports is still limited to an annual check.
However, both the Advanced and Total plans offer three-bureau credit monitoring, reports, and scores. After we signed up, we could view our TransUnion and Experian scores and reports almost immediately, but it may take several days for those to populate.
Typically, you need a credit score of at least 661 to qualify for top credit products, but having an excellent score of 781 or higher is even more preferred.
Identity restoration services
All LifeLock plans include identity restoration services. You'll receive a personal, U.S.-based restoration specialist who can help you resolve fraudulent activity.
Another identity restoration service from LifeLock is stolen wallet protection. LifeLock will help you cancel or replace credit cards, a driver's license, and other personal documentation if your wallet is missing.
LifeLock also offers identity theft insurance, ranging from $1.05 million to $3 million in coverage, including stolen funds reimbursement.
Restoration support is available 24/7 by phone, and you can find all this information on the Restoration tab in your dashboard.
Does LifeLock keep your data safe?
LifeLock collects the data you provide, which could be extensive because it's a service that provides identity theft protection. LifeLock requires sufficient information to monitor your identity effectively, so the more information it has, the better.
When signing up for LifeLock, you have to provide your name, email address, phone number, birth date, and SSN. Depending on what you want monitored, you might have to connect bank accounts, social media accounts, investment accounts, as well as others.
Fortunately, only LifeLock appears to use your personal information to provide you with its services. According to its privacy policy, LifeLock doesn’t sell your personal information.
Note, however, that LifeLock might have to share your information for certain features to work correctly. It may disclose personal data about you (with your consent) to the following groups:
- Partners
- Distributors or resellers
- Advertising partners
- Data analytics providers
- Service providers
- Payment processors
- Public authorities and legal proceedings
- Restoration services
- Third-party service providers
- Social media and internet platforms
- Corporate affiliates
- Business transfers
This is common for identity theft protection services, as they sometimes use other providers for specific purposes.
LifeLock also shares personal data for marketing and other purposes, which we weren't as pleased about. You do have the right to opt-out of sharing your personal data for advertising by selecting the privacy settings link in the Norton footer.
LifeLock provides two-factor authentication (2FA) as an option in your account settings; it’s not turned on by default. It’s easy to set up and provides an added layer of security, which we like.

You can access your LifeLock account by using a web browser on any compatible device, such as a computer or tablet. You can also use the LifeLock Identity by Norton app on your compatible smartphone.

We typically prefer using live chat features to talk to customer service representatives, as they’re often a quick and easy way to get answers to our questions. We started our conversation with Norton's virtual assistant. It was actually able to answer several questions without just directing us to a support guide.
When we insisted on speaking to an agent, the virtual assistant let us know that it could take anywhere from five to 10 minutes to receive a response. However, the live chat agent connected with us almost instantly, and they were helpful.
LifeLock user reviews
- Apple App Store rating: 4.8/5
- Google Play Store rating: 4.3/5
- Trustpilot rating: 4.9/5
The LifeLock app has particularly strong ratings for its iOS app, and solid ratings for its Android app. Apple reviewers note how the LifeLock provides peace of mind and prompt updates. On the other hand, Android reviewers call out how the app is buggy and doesn't load properly.
On Trustpilot, LifeLock has overwhelmingly positive reviews; 86% of reviewers gave LifeLock a five-star rating. Reviewers feel secure using LifeLock due to its user-friendly experience, active monitoring, and fast response times from support.
LifeLock usability
LifeLock's setup process was seamless. There’s nothing to install on a desktop computer; you can access your dashboard after logging in to your account on the LifeLock website.
As our account was being set up, LifeLock prompted us with questions about specific identity theft concerns so we could toggle these features on or off.
The dashboard itself is simple to use and navigate. It displays the latest alerts, credit services, and more on the main page, but you can click through a specific section for more details.
Top alternatives
There are a lot of strengths to LifeLock, but it's not the only option on the market. We've compiled a list of alternatives with budget-friendly plans, extensive features, great customer support, and more to consider if you're still on the fence.
LifeLock vs. OmniWatch
LifeLock has extensive monitoring, including home title monitoring, bank account takeover alerts, and investment/401(k) alerts, all categories OmniWatch doesn't offer at any tier. LifeLock also has plans for couples without children as well as larger family coverage, while OmniWatch's Family plan is capped at two adults with no option to add kids.
But OmniWatch offers more insurance and scam coverage: its Elite and Family plans offer up to $4 million in identity theft insurance, which is higher than LifeLock's $3 million cap on Total. Learn more in our LifeLock vs. OmniWatch comparison.
LifeLock vs. Aura
LifeLock's strongest case against Aura is insurance. Its Total plan reaches up to $3 million in coverage per adult, three times Aura's $1 million per adult. LifeLock also adds social media monitoring, phone takeover alerts, and home title monitoring, categories Aura doesn't cover.
Aura counters with its bundled structure. Every plan includes VPN, antivirus, password manager, and three-bureau credit monitoring at no extra cost, while LifeLock reserves its top features, home title monitoring, investment alerts, three-bureau credit reports, for its most expensive Total plan. Learn more in our LifeLock vs. Aura comparison.
Bottom line: Is LifeLock good?
LifeLock provides an above-average identity protection service based on its comprehensive feature offerings. The Total plan easily provides the best monitoring solutions of its available options because you get three-bureau monitoring and up to $3 million in coverage.
We also found that LifeLock's pricing reflects its feature set, especially if you choose an annual plan, though it costs more upfront than many competitors. How we test and rate identity theft protection services
Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 10+ identity theft protection services using a consistent process. We sign up several days before formal testing begins, giving each service time to populate our dashboard with real monitoring data.
Then, we evaluate each product across six areas:
- Identity and credit monitoring (40%): We assess how comprehensive the service is, specifically checking for SSN monitoring, financial account monitoring, credit monitoring across all three bureaus, and more.
- Editor's score (20%): We evaluate the service's ease of use, security practices, the company's breach history, and anything else that's not addressed in the other categories.
- Value (15%): We compare the lowest and highest monthly plan prices against what's actually included at each tier. We also check if the service offers a free trial.
- Basics (10%): We review how many adults and children can be covered, as well as the maximum identity theft insurance value offered.
- Customer service (10%): We determine if there are several options available for human support.
- Extras (5%): We check whether the service includes additional tools we find valuable: dark web monitoring, social media monitoring, data breach alerts, and lost wallet protection.
We retest all identity theft protection services at least once a year. To learn more about how we test, read our full identity theft protection testing methodology here.
Star rating summary
LifeLock earned a 4.8 star rating based on weighted scores for our experience, value, features, and customer service.

LifeLock FAQs
Is LifeLock really worth it?
LifeLock's Total plan may be worth it if you're looking for the most extensive monitoring and protection against identity theft, home title theft, and other forms of fraud. Other plans might not be as beneficial because you only get two-bureau credit monitoring and fewer monitoring features overall.
What is the difference between LifeLock and Norton LifeLock?
They’re the same thing. LifeLock used to be its own company but was acquired by Symantec in 2017, and its name was changed.
You can still purchase LifeLock as a standalone product for identity theft protection, or you can include it with your purchase of other Norton products like the Norton 360 cybersecurity suite.
What is the downside of LifeLock?
LifeLock Core and LifeLock Advanced, the lower-priced LifeLock plans, have limited financial account monitoring. With Core, you can only monitor two credit, checking, and savings accounts, and with Advanced, you can only monitor five of these accounts. Other types of monitoring are limited to the Total plan, including monitoring for investment accounts and home titles.
