How we test and rate identity theft protection services

To review identity theft protection services, we sign up for the service several days prior to our review. This allows the service time to begin populating our dashboard with identity and credit monitoring information and send us real-time alerts. During this time, we also evaluate the service's ease of use, contact customer support, and play around with the extra features.

After spending some time with the service, we use our proprietary grading rubric which calculates a star rating based on prices, identity monitoring features, credit features, and other criteria.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full ID theft testing methodology here.

Star rating summary

OmniWatch has a solid star rating of 4.5 due to its unique feature offerings and helpful customer support.

OmniWatch received lower scores in the experience category because only offers dark web monitoring at this time. It also received a lower score in the value category because of its more expensive price range and limited free trial period.

Our experience

OmniWatch has a straightforward setup process. You'll provide basic information like your name and date of birth, along with your Social Security number (SSN) and phone number to verify your identity.

We like that OmniWatch lets us know it uses AES-256 encryption and is SOC 2 Type II certified, both during the setup process and on the dashboard. Many identity theft protection programs make it difficult to find this information, which is why this feature helped us build trust with the service.

OmniWatch account setup page to enter your email

OmniWatch has revamped its dashboard since our last test, and it's a lot more comprehensive. There's an Identity Security checklist with tasks to complete for full setup, plus an alert summary, your credit score, and more.

OmniWatch main dashboard

We also tested OmniWatch's new scam protection features. We submitted several examples of scams to the scanner tool, and it successfully detected a fake job text and even a subscription scam via a voicemail transcript.

OmniWatch scanner tool results, detecting that a text message has the medium likelihood of being a scam.

OmniWatch kept us informed about all its features via email, along with helpful tips and explanations for new users.

Email from OmniWatch about its credit lock feature

Overall, OmniWatch is a straightforward service that provides a user-friendly experience. We hope it expands on the product by creating more plan options for families with children, adding identity monitoring beyond dark web monitoring, and including financial transaction alerts.

Verdict: 4/5. There's a lot to like about OmniWatch but it's not the most comprehensive service just yet. We've also had issues setting up its antivirus and VPN extras.

OmniWatch prices and plans

OmniWatch's price ranges from $7.00-$30.00/mo. There are three plan tiers: Basic, Elite, and Family, which can be paid either annually or monthly.

OmniWatch's monthly plans are on the higher end of identity theft protection, and the best value is purchasing an annual subscription. However, keep in mind that OmniWatch's price doesn't increase after the first year, unlike other ID theft providers

OmniWatch also offers up to $2 million in coverage, which is more than LifeLock's starting plan. As a bonus, all OmniWatch plans include a VPN and antivirus protection.

OmniWatch now offers an annual plan that will save you money in the long run. Here's the plan breakdown:

Plan 1-month cost 1-year cost
Basic $10.00/mo $7.00/mo
Elite $20.00/mo $13.00/mo
Family $30.00/mo $25.00/mo

Here's OmniWatch's starting prices compared to other identity theft protection plans:

OmniWatch starts at about the same price as other more established protection services. All the plan prices highlighted above are for individuals only.

OmniWatch doesn't offer a money-back guarantee, but you can pay $1 for a seven-day trial period.

Plan comparison

Although the Basic and Elite plans seem similar, the Elite plan offers three-bureau credit monitoring and credit reports, while the Basic plan only offers those from TransUnion. The Elite plan also provides up to $25,000 in coverage for protection against both ransomware and scams.

The Elite plan also extends antivirus protection from one to three devices and includes a bonus ad blocker.

OmniWatch Family covers up to two individuals. There isn't an option to add an additional adult or any children to the plans, so OmniWatch isn't the best option if you’re trying to protect more than one additional person. For comprehensive family protection, we recommend Aura or LifeLock.

Plan Basic Elite Family

Verdict: 4/5. OmniWatch has a reasonable price range, but we wish it had a true free trial period or a money-back guarantee.

OmniWatch features

If you’re looking for dark web monitoring or credit monitoring, OmniWatch provides both services. It also comes with extras for device protection, like antivirus software, a VPN, and an ad blocker.

However, OmniWatch doesn’t include many other services that other identity monitoring solutions offer, such as financial activity monitoring and social media monitoring.

Verdict: 4/5. OmniWatch has some great features like dark web monitoring, credit monitoring and credit reports, and up to $2 million in identity theft insurance. But it doesn't yet monitor your Social Security number, financial accounts, and other parts of your identity.

What does OmniWatch protect against?

With OmniWatch, you can monitor the dark web for your personal information, including your Social Security number (SSN), phone number, physical address, and email address.

It also provides credit monitoring and credit reports, as well as credit lock with TransUnion, so you can monitor and protect your credit profile.

In the event of identity theft, OmniWatch offers coverage for:

  • Up to $2 million in identity theft insurance
  • Up to $25,000 in ransomware protection (Elite and Family plans only)
  • Up to $25,000 in scam protection insurance (Elite and Family plans only)

It also provides identity theft restoration agents to support you through the process of restoring your identity or dealing with a lost wallet.

Identity monitoring

OmniWatch scans the dark web for any of the information you supply in your profile, including name, email address, phone number, and physical address. The Elite and Family plans include home title monitoring as well.

OmniWatch will also alert you if any of your information is involved in a data breach and is found on the dark web. You'll receive a list of recommended actions to take for each breach, like changing your account email and adding two-factor authentication.

OmniWatch alerts dashboard showing latest breaches

Unfortunately, OmniWatch’s identity monitoring stops at the dark web. The best identity theft protection services can monitor additional items, such as your financial activity, USPS changes, and social media accounts.

Credit monitoring

OmniWatch Basic provides TransUnion credit monitoring and credit reports. OmniWatch Elite includes credit reports and monitoring services from Experian and Equifax.

If there’s a credit monitoring alert, you can receive notifications via email or by phone.

OmniWatch credit monitoring dashboard

Credit reports and credit scores

OmniWatch provides monthly TransUnion credit reports and scores with all plans. The Elite plan also provides TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax credit reports every 90 days.

Monitoring your credit report and credit score can help you discover identity theft when it happens. It also allows you to determine your creditworthiness in case you’re looking to apply for anything that uses credit.

When shopping for a car or applying for a credit card, you may be asked about your credit score to help the lender determine your interest rate and approval status.

Identity restoration services

OmniWatch offers identity restoration services with all of its plans. With OmniWatch, you get access to restoration specialists 24/7. These specialists can guide you through the steps to take when your identity is stolen and assist with completing the necessary documentation.

You'll also get up to $2 million of identity theft insurance with all plans. OmniWatch has also added up to $25,000 in ransomware protection and up to $25,000 in scam protection insurance.

If your identity is stolen, it can be daunting to figure out how to get everything back under your control. Identity restoration services are a great way to help alleviate some of the pressure.

Bonus features

Although OmniWatch is a relatively new service, we were impressed by its additional features. All plans include a virtual private network (VPN) and antivirus protection for one device. The Elite plan provides antivirus protection for two more devices plus an ad blocker.

Once again, we couldn't set up the antivirus protection because our account didn't list a registration key.

OmniWatch prompt to install antivirus protection mentioning

We downloaded the VPN, but it's mainly focused on encrypting your connection on unsecured networks. You won't be able to select specific locations for unblocking geo-restrictions, but at least it can keep your traffic secure.

OmniWatch VPN with an encrypted coonection.

There are also new scam protection features included. You can upload text messages, emails, URLs, or images, and OmniWatch will tell you whether they're legitimate.

OmniWatch scam scan options (scan an email, scan a text message, scan a screenshot, scan a URL)

It can also automatically scan your Gmail account and flag any potential phishing emails.

Does OmniWatch keep your data safe?

OmniWatch is new to the market, so the company hasn’t experienced any data breaches or concerns. We evaluated the company’s privacy policy to see if there was anything of note.

In its privacy policy, OmniWatch says, “We may share your Personal Information with advertisers and other third parties as part of our service to you.”

OmniWatch notes that it won’t share any of your financial information with these advertisers or third parties, unless it’s for performing OmniWatch's core services, such as billing and fulfillment.

Another section that raised our eyebrows was under Section III, Sales/Sharing of Personal Data. OmniWatch states,

"In the preceding twelve (12) months, OmniWatch has utilized third-party advertisers who collect cookies, pixels, or other technologies on our Website to provide advertisements about goods and services likely to be of greater interest to you. We may receive consideration for this sharing."

It's not clear what consideration means in this context, but we assume it's compensation.

OmniWatch does provide direct links on how to turn off cookies on several browsers, but we still don't care for the vague and concerning language. At least it provides some links for opt-out pages, but we wish it weren’t sharing data for this purpose at all.

But OmniWatch is extremely transparent about the types of data collected, the reasons behind the collection, and with whom the data may be shared. Most of the data is collected for service providers or data analytics providers, which is standard (see I. Personal Information We Collect and Share).

Although no one likes being targeted by ads from "partners" or "affiliates," this practice is unsurprisingly common among identity theft protection services.

If you’re an OmniWatch user, you can access identity restoration services 24/7. However, for questions outside of that, you’re still limited to the customer support hours.

OmniWatch also offers a help center where you can find answers to some questions. Most of these address specific situations and how to respond. However, the help center doesn’t provide a lot of information about the features or specifications of the service.

Verdict: 5/5. OmniWatch offers email and phone support so you can get in touch with an agent. It also has online guides in the help center.

Top alternatives

While OmniWatch is still in its infancy, there are several other, more established identity monitoring solutions you can explore. Although it's one of our top recommendations, you can see how OmniWatch compares to established services like Aura and LifeLock in the table below:

OmniWatch user reviews

  • Trustpilot score: 4.4

A large majority of Trustpilot reviewers gave OmniWatch a five-star rating, 69% to be exact. Positive reviews mention the helpfulness of the data breach alerts, attentive customer service, and peace of mind the service provides.

Only 6% of reviewers gave OmniWatch a one-star rating. Most negative reviews are from newer users who are still determining how they feel about the service.

Bottom line: Is OmniWatch good?

Yes, OmniWatch is a good identity theft protection service for individuals or couples. Even still, there is work to be done for OmniWatch to become a true competitor in the crowded identity monitoring space. It provides some identity theft information, but lacks additional monitoring sources, including financial activity, social media, and USPS address change monitoring.

However, we were impressed that it provides up to $2 million in identity theft insurance as well as an additional $25,000 in ransomware protection and scam insurance. Most identity theft protection services only up to $1 million in coverage, which makes this a standout feature.

Overall, we believe OmniWatch has potential as a new identity theft protection service on the market, particularly if you're seeking an individual plan with basic protection.

OmniWatch FAQs

Is OmniWatch worth it?

Yes, OmniWatch is a good identity theft service for individuals seeking basic protection at an affordable price. OmniWatch doesn't provide comprehensive monitoring, unlike competitors that offer social media monitoring, USPS address change monitoring, and more.

What does OmniWatch do?

OmniWatch scans your personal information on the dark web and monitors your credit reports for signs of fraud. If you're a victim of identity theft, you can also receive identity recovery assistance and up to $2 million in identity theft insurance.

As an identity theft protection service, OmniWatch also provides up to $25,000 in ransomware protection and up to $25,000 in scam protection.

How much does OmniWatch cost?

OmniWatch costs $7.00/mo for the Basic plan and $13.00/mo for the Elite Plan. There's also a Family plan that starts at $25.00/mo for two adults.
