What I liked

Strong tracker blocking: NetShield passed every analytics and contextual ad test in my AdBlock Tester run. For privacy-focused users, that’s real protection on top of ad blocking.

Available on Google Play Store: Unlike Total Adblock, you can download the Proton VPN app directly from the Google Play Store. That way, you won't have to deal with certificate installs, sideloading, or other extra steps.

Extra features: NetShield comes bundled with Proton VPN, which brings encrypted traffic, IP masking, and access to geo-restricted content. For users already looking for a privacy-focused VPN, it's a strong pairing.

What I didn't like

DNS-based limitations: Because NetShield relies on DNS filtering, it’s better at stopping requests to known ad, tracker, and malicious domains than it is at cleaning up every visible ad element on a page. In practice, that means some image-heavy, embedded, or video ads can still slip through. 

During testing, it failed nearly every banner ad test on AdBlock Tester. On Can You Block It, it blocked the interstitial ad’s content, but the blank ad window stayed up, and I still had to wait out the countdown. It blocks the domain, but not always the ad container itself.

Limited ads blocked counter: NetShield's ads blocked counter tracks overall totals, not per-page breakdowns. You also can't view details on the ads, trackers, and malware being blocked.

NetShield did well on tracker blocking but fell short on banner and image ads in my mobile testing. It tied Total Adblock for the top AdBlock Tester score, thanks to perfect contextual and analytics results. 

On Can You Block It, it passed two tests and partly blocked interstitial ads. It can’t block YouTube ads on mobile at all.

Surfshark CleanWeb is best viewed as a VPN feature with built-in ad and tracker blocking, not as a dedicated standalone Android ad blocker. It makes the most sense for users who already want a VPN and plan to protect multiple devices under one subscription.

What I liked

Good value: For anyone in the market for a VPN, Surfshark has some of the lowest starting prices and allows unlimited simultaneous device connections. A VPN encrypts internet traffic, which can reduce bandwidth throttling, hide browsing activity, and help bypass geo-restricted content. With strong features like CleanWeb, I think Surfshark is a worthy investment.

Privacy-focused: I appreciated that Surfshark doesn’t mess around when it comes to privacy. CleanWeb can also block trackers and malware for more comprehensive protection, though it missed some analytics trackers in my Android testing. 

Surfshark One plans add a web content blocker too. It blocks phishing and malware sites and lets you filter categories like gambling and adult content.

Easy setup: CleanWeb is a single toggle in the Surfshark app’s VPN settings, so there’s no separate app to download. Once it’s on, it blocks ads and trackers whenever you’re connected to the VPN.

What I didn't like

Limited compared to its desktop app: Unfortunately, CleanWeb 2.0's full capabilities are only available as a desktop browser extension. The CleanWeb feature in the Surfshark Android app is more limited because it doesn't include extras like blocking cookie notices, malware alerts, or ads on streaming services. 

On Android, CleanWeb’s protections are tied to the Surfshark app experience, so it’s less flexible than a dedicated device-wide blocker. If you want the strongest possible ad blocking on mobile without relying on a broader VPN bundle, this may not be the best fit.

Lowest mobile scores on this list: CleanWeb scored 49/100 on AdBlock Tester, the lowest of my four picks. Android users get the app’s CleanWeb feature, not the CleanWeb 2.0 browser extension, so results trail desktop. It blocked contextual ads but failed every GIF and static image banner test. It also let Google Analytics and Hotjar scripts run.

What I didn't like

Doesn't block YouTube ads: While the desktop version of Threat Protection Pro blocks YouTube ads, the mobile version doesn't.

Have to buy in a bundle: Threat Protection Pro can't be purchased separately from NordVPN. Because Threat Protection Pro comes as part of a NordVPN subscription, it can be harder to justify if your only goal is blocking ads on Android. It’s a stronger value for people who also want VPN access and additional security features.

With so many ad blockers to choose from, deciding the best one for an Android device can be overwhelming. Here are some factors to consider when picking an Android ad blocker:

• Determine whether spending money on an ad blocker makes sense. Most ad blockers offer free plans, but they may be limited in the types of ads they block.
• On Android, your options are a Firefox browser extension, a standalone app, or an ad blocker built into a VPN. A browser extension only works in Firefox. Some standalone apps, like Total Adblock, come from outside the Google Play Store, which may feel like a risk worth weighing. VPN-based blockers like Proton VPN NetShield are on the Play Store, but they need a VPN subscription.
• VPN-based blockers like Proton VPN NetShield and NordVPN Threat Protection Pro filter at the DNS level. In my testing, that meant strong contextual ad blocking, but both failed nearly every banner ad test.
• Mobile ad blockers might not always block in-app ads, which can be frustrating when pre-roll ads still appear on YouTube. Ad blockers like Total Adblock let you open the video in their app as a workaround.
• The best ad blockers will keep a device free of ads without draining battery life.
• Some ad blockers are easy to set and forget, but having a customizable app or extension is a nice bonus. Features like Acceptable Ads and whitelisting let you decide which sites should still receive ad revenue.

The best free ad blockers for Android

Free Android ad blockers can be useful, but they usually come with tradeoffs in convenience, coverage, or features. That’s why I only recommend free options from established privacy or cybersecurity brands that performed well in our testing. For fully free Android options, Firefox-compatible blockers such as AdGuard, AdLock, and uBlock Origin are more realistic starting points than premium-first apps. If you’re open to paying, Total Adblock remains our top overall recommendation.

I've tested all three Firefox extensions and know they work well. They block annoying ads, including pop-ups, video ads, and trackers, and these ad blockers won't sell user data. While there's no free Android app, you can download Firefox on any Android device to access the free ad blocker extensions.

Both AdGuard and AdLock are freemium ad blockers, meaning they offer a free version alongside a premium tier. AdGuard offers extensive customization, but the free version doesn't block annoying ads in apps and games. It also lacks the parental controls bonus that comes with the premium plan.

Similarly, AdLock offers a range of features, including automatically blocking acceptable ads by default. However, only the premium plan unlocks additional perks, such as a spyware filter and a social media filter. AdLock Free also has limitations when it comes to blocking all browser ads and in-app ads.

uBlock Origin is an open-source ad blocker that's totally free. Its compatibility is now more limited since Google Chrome removed the extension from the Chrome Web Store. However, uBlock Origin still works in browsers such as Firefox on Android and remains a strong choice for users comfortable tweaking filters and settings.

The downside is that getting the most out of the extension requires some technical know-how. If you enjoy custom rules and filters, uBlock Origin can offer a clean browsing experience.

Brave browser for Android

Another alternative is the Brave browser, which has built-in ad-blocking technology. Brave is a secure web browser available for download in the Google Play Store. And while it's a bit overkill to use an ad blocker extension with Brave, free Android ad blockers like AdGuard are compatible with it.

I'd recommend only using AdGuard on top of Brave if AdGuard Extra is needed to block Twitch ads. However, Brave offers advanced content filtering to block tricky ads, as found on platforms like Twitch.

Bottom line: The best ad blockers for Android

If you want the best overall Android ad blocker based on my testing, Total Adblock is still the strongest pick. It was the only option that got me past YouTube ads, and it tied for the top AdBlock Tester score.
