  • Added benefit of a VPN to encrypt your data, hide your IP address, avoid phishing scams, and minimize malware risks

Surfshark CleanWeb is integrated with Surfshark's virtual private network (VPN). By enabling the CleanWeb toggle on your VPN settings, you can block ads and pop-ups, autoplay ads, cookie pop-up requests, and more.

Surfshark also provides CleanWeb 2.0, which is included with the Surfshark browser extension for Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge. CleanWeb 2.0's capabilities include blocking ads, blocking cookie pop-up banners, and receiving alerts for data breaches and malware.

What we liked

Value: We appreciate that you can get CleanWeb at a lower price than its competitor, NordVPN Threat Protection. Surfshark's pricing starts at $1.99/mo for a two-year plan (often with some extra months thrown in), and it allows for unlimited simultaneous connections so you can encrypt your internet connection and block ads on multiple devices.

Protection: We were pleased to see CleanWeb receive a near-perfect AdBlock Tester score of 96/100. In addition to securing our web browsing and streaming, CleanWeb protects our online privacy with top-notch VPN services.

What we didn’t like

No standalone ad blocker: Although Surfshark is an affordable ad blocker, you'd still be required to buy a VPN subscription to use Surfshark CleanWeb. This may not be ideal if you already have a VPN or are simply looking for an ad blocker.

CleanWeb 2.0 is an extension only: In addition, you can only access CleanWeb 2.0 with the Surfshark browser extension. This can be frustrating if you're trying to block ads on your smartphone or other devices.

Surfshark CleanWeb: pros and cons

Pros
  • Works with Surfshark VPN to protect unlimited simultaneous devices
  • CleanWeb 2.0 blocks all ads, including YouTube ads
  • Compatible with Apple TV and FireTV
Cons
  • Surfshark subscription needed
  • CleanWeb 2.0 is only available as a browser extension

Test results

Surfshark CleanWeb is a high-performing ad blocker that pleasantly surprised us with its latest results. It received either perfect or near-perfect scores on all our ad blocking tests. Plus, it successfully blocked ads on YouTube.

  • Stops intrusive ads before they can even load, improving browsing speed and experience
  • Identifies malware-ridden files and protects against visiting malicious websites
  • Encrypts your data and blocks third-party trackers for increased security and privacy

NordVPN Threat Protection is an integrated ad and malware blocker included with NordVPN, one of the best VPNs available. But its plans come with a lot more than just the ability to encrypt your internet connection. You can use it to block ads, trackers, and malicious websites, and to scan downloaded files for malware.

You can also opt to use Threat Protection Lite while connected to NordVPN, ensuring that your device is protected from intrusive ads and malicious sites whenever you need.

What we liked

Privacy: NordVPN Threat Protection offers enhanced privacy with the inclusion of NordVPN, the #1-rated VPN on the market. In addition to blocking most ads and trackers, Threat Protection also allows for whitelisting and blacklisting, so you can tailor your ad-blocking experience as needed.

Malware protection: We also appreciate that Threat Protection can block malware. Threat Protection passed our malware detection and phishing detection tests, giving us reassurance that NordVPN could act as a well-rounded cybersecurity suite. Like other Nord products, Threat Protection was easy to set up, and its interface was intuitive.

What we didn’t like

Price: NordVPN Threat Protection can be pricey, considering you're paying for a VPN subscription and not just a premium ad blocker. Surfshark has its own ad and malware blocker, known as CleanWeb, which is more affordable.

Lite is limited: If you opt to use Threat Protection Lite, the capabilities are pretty limited. Threat Protection Lite can't block trackers or scan for malware, which could put your device in danger of malware if you're not using an antivirus program. It can also be inconsistent about blocking YouTube ads.

NordVPN Threat Protection: pros and cons

Pros
  • Blocks ads, trackers, and malware
  • Allows for whitelisting and blacklisting
Cons
  • There are cheaper alternatives on the market, like Surfshark CleanWeb
  • Threat Protection Lite is limited

Test results

NordVPN Threat Protection is a decent ad blocker, but it's not the most efficient. For one, it can't block YouTube ads at all, which is disappointing if you're looking to block ads on YouTube.

It also struggled with the analytics tools and error monitoring categories in AdBlock Tester. But NordVPN Threat Protection provides some protection against web tracking.

Star rating summary

NordVPN Threat Protection received a solid star rating of 4.5 due to its 5/5 scores in the experience, compatibility, and customer service categories.

NordVPN Threat Protection is more expensive than most of the ad blockers on this list because it's only available with a NordVPN subscription. It also lacks features like blocking YouTube ads and it received lower scores with AdBlock Tester.

PROMOTION: 77% Off For the 5-Year Plan
  • Offers a free extension that's compatible with major browsers and a premium plan with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS compatibility
  • Effective blocker against follow-along videos, banner ads, YouTube ads, and more
  • Doesn't share or sell your data with third parties

AdLock is one of the best free extensions we've tested. AdLock blocked most ads with just the extension, even without a paid subscription. It also promises to respect your data privacy by effectively tackling trackers and not selling or sharing your data.

With AdLock Premium, you can also download the AdLock apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. With the app, you'll be able to block ads, trackers, and other annoyances outside your Firefox browser.

What we liked

Anti-tracking: AdLock provides strong protection against online tracking based on our in-house testing.

Private free extension: AdLock's privacy policy is another indicator of its commitment to privacy. It states that it gathers anonymous usage information, but this data is stored in your local storage and is not sold or shared with third parties. We feel good about its data usage, even with the free extension.

What we didn’t like

Long subscription period: If you opt for a premium subscription and want to get the best value, you'll need to commit to a five-year subscription. There are also annual and monthly plans, but those come at a higher cost.

Limited free extension: It's unique that AdLock includes a blocker specifically for social media, but we didn't like that it came at a premium price. Plus, the spyware blockers are only available with a paid plan.

AdLock pros and cons

Pros
  • Effective free ad blocker extension
  • Doesn't share or sell your data to third parties
  • Consistently blocks trackers
Cons
  • Premium pricing
  • Social media and spyware blockers only available on paid tier

Test results

AdLock received a solid star rating of 4.6. It received 5/5 scores in the test results, compatibility and customer service categories.

AdLock was docked points for experience because its desktop app didn't work for us during our most recent testing. And although the price is affordable, it was marked down in the value category because it only covers up to five devices with a subscription.

Best Open Source Ad Blocker
Ad Blocker
uBlock Origin
  • One of the best totally free ad blockers available
  • Highly customizable, open-source ad blocker that's compatible with multiple browsers
  • Can block advertising and analytics tools, including banner ads, video ads, and trackers, and can even bypass soft paywalls
  • Better suited for advanced users because some features require technical knowledge

uBlock Origin is open-source software available on various browsers, offering the most customizable features of any brand we tested. Along with the basic services of blocking ads, trackers, and malicious URLs, this ad blocker offers several additional customizable features that can help keep you safe during your web browsing.

Firefox’s website for the uBlock Origin extension calls it “a wide-spectrum content blocker with CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature.”

Related to the company’s mantra, a user’s personal study on GitHub highlighted that uBlock Origin uses less computer memory than some of the leading brands.[1] The benefits of reducing memory consumption include speed and page stability, so you can use this ad blocker without worrying about sacrificing your PC’s memory.

What we liked

Good free ad blocking: uBlock Origin scored a 100/100 with AdBlock Tester, which is a perfect score. It blocked all the ads in the contextual advertising, analytics tools, banner advertising, and error monitoring categories.

Unique filters: We also liked that the extension offers a multitude of filter lists that you can enable or disable within your settings. These lists are additional options beyond their default settings, such as:

  • EasyList Cookie: Blocks cookie banners, GDPR overlay windows, and other privacy-related notices.
  • Fanboy Annoyances: Blocks social media content, pop-ups, and other annoying objects to help decrease webpage load times.
  • AdGuard Annoyances: Blocks cookie notifications, pop-ups, mobile app banners, widgets, and other annoyances.
  • Dan Pollock’s hosts file: Stops your PC from connecting to certain internet hosts to protect you from spyware and pop-up traps, prevent further tracking, and reduce bandwidth use.

What we didn’t like

Growing pains: uBlock Origin released its JavaScript blocking feature in September 2018, taking the extension a step forward in blocking JavaScript that can hide malware or attempt exploits. While this was a positive step for the organization, some user reviews from the Firefox browser extension showed concern about the feature automatically blocking certain websites.

Luckily, the developer addressed the issue by fixing it in GitHub and responding directly to the review.

uBlock Origin pros and cons

Pros
  • Software doesn’t use as much PC memory
  • Offers customizable add-on features
Cons
  • Scripting block feature may block content from wanted websites
  • No longer available on Google Chrome

Test results

uBlock Origin performed well in all of our testing. It received a near-perfect AdBlock Tester score and aced all the Can You Block It tests. It can also block ads on YouTube.

uBlock Origin received a high star rating of 4.7. It received 5/5 scores in the value, features, and test results categories. We also liked our experience with uBlock Origin, but we're disappointed that it's no longer available on Google Chrome.

uBlock Origin is only available as a browser extension, which is why it was marked down in the compatibility category. There's also no option to contact customer support, only forums and guides.

How we tested the best ad blockers for Firefox

We thoroughly tested the most critical security components of each ad blocker before selecting our top ad blockers for Firefox. First, we tested the ad blockers using AdBlock Tester, a site that lets you test your ad blocker against analytics and advertising services embedded in the testing website.

We also used Can You Block It tests to determine whether ad blockers can prevent "ad blocker warning" pop-ups, banner ads, and interstitial ads that appear while the webpage loads.

To ensure each testing experience was unique, we fully disabled each ad blocker extension before enabling the next on our list. Additionally, we selected our top three because they had the highest scores for blocking ads, blocking trackers, and blocking ads that live on social media, among other factors.

Learn how to boost your browsing security by adjusting Firefox privacy settings and more.

Bottom line

Our top ad blockers for Firefox all blocked ads, trackers, and potential malware. To make the list, they all had to easily pass our hands-on tests while browsing the web with AdBlock Tester and Can You Block It. However, we've determined that the best ad blocker for Firefox is Surfshark CleanWeb.
