Surfshark CleanWeb is integrated with Surfshark's virtual private network (VPN). By enabling the CleanWeb toggle on your VPN settings, you can block ads and pop-ups, autoplay ads, cookie pop-up requests, and more.

Surfshark also provides CleanWeb 2.0, which is included with the Surfshark browser extension for Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge. CleanWeb 2.0's capabilities include blocking ads and cookie pop-up banners, and providing alerts for data breaches and malware.

What I liked

Value: I appreciate that you can get CleanWeb at a lower price than its competitor, NordVPN Threat Protection. Surfshark's pricing starts at $1.78/mo for a two-year plan (often with some extra months thrown in), and it allows for unlimited simultaneous connections so you can encrypt your internet connection and block ads on multiple devices.

Protection: I was pleased to see CleanWeb receive a near-perfect AdBlock Tester score of 96/100. In addition to securing my web browsing and streaming, CleanWeb protects my online privacy with top-notch VPN services.

What I didn't like

No standalone ad blocker: Although Surfshark is an affordable ad blocker, you'd still be required to buy a VPN subscription to use Surfshark CleanWeb. CleanWeb 2.0 is an extension only: In addition, you can only access CleanWeb 2.0 with the Surfshark browser extension. This can be frustrating if you're trying to block ads on your smartphone or other devices.

Total Adblock: Best for Android

Total Adblock is made by the same company behind TotalAV antivirus, bringing real cybersecurity expertise to ad blocking. I found it extremely easy to set up, making it my top pick for blocking ads in Firefox on Android.

What I liked

Android Firefox support: Total Adblock is the standout pick for Firefox on Android. It has a dedicated Android app that works alongside Firefox for mobile, which is rare among Firefox ad blockers. If you regularly browse on an Android device and want a hands-off way to block ads in Firefox, Total Adblock is the easiest solution on this list.

High test scores: Total Adblock received a perfect 100/100 with AdBlock Tester, clearing everything in the contextual advertising, analytics tools, banner ads, and error monitoring categories. When we tested Total Adblock on Android, it received a 97/100,  which is still impressive. The paid plan also removes unlimited ads, disables browser notifications, and bundles antivirus protection from TotalAV.

What I didn't like

Price increases after the first year: Total Adblock's starting price is Free, but renewal pricing rises sharply, so you can expect to pay over $100 per year after that. It may be worth it if you don't already have antivirus protection, since the paid plan includes the full TotalAV security suite. 

Limited free version: The free plan excludes the top 15,000 websites on Alexa.com, which limits its day-to-day usefulness for general browsing. A premium subscription unlocks full ad-blocking coverage.

NordVPN Threat Protection: Best for online privacy

NordVPN Threat Protection is an integrated ad and malware blocker included with NordVPN, one of the best VPNs available. But its plans offer more than just the ability to encrypt your internet connection. You can use it to block ads, trackers, and malicious websites, and to scan downloaded files for malware.

You can also use Threat Protection Lite while connected to NordVPN, so your device is protected from intrusive ads and malicious sites whenever you need it.

What I liked

Privacy: NordVPN Threat Protection offers enhanced privacy by incorporating NordVPN, the #1-rated VPN on the market. In addition to blocking most ads and trackers, Threat Protection also allows for whitelisting and blacklisting, so you can tailor your ad-blocking experience as needed. Malware protection: I also appreciate that Threat Protection can block malware. Threat Protection passed my malware detection and phishing detection tests, giving me reassurance that NordVPN could act as a well-rounded cybersecurity suite. Like other Nord products, Threat Protection was easy to set up, and its interface was intuitive.

What I didn't like

Price: NordVPN Threat Protection can be pricey, given you're paying for a VPN subscription rather than just a premium ad blocker. Surfshark has its own ad and malware blocker, known as CleanWeb, which is more affordable.

Lite is limited: If you opt to use Threat Protection Lite, the capabilities are pretty limited. Threat Protection Lite can't block trackers or scan for malware, which could leave your device vulnerable to malware if you're not using an antivirus program. It can also be inconsistent about blocking YouTube ads.

AdLock: Best free extension

AdLock is one of the best free extensions I've tested. AdLock blocked most ads with just the extension, even without a paid subscription. It also promises to respect your data privacy by effectively tackling trackers and not selling or sharing your data.

With AdLock Premium, you can also download the AdLock apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. With the app, you'll be able to block ads, trackers, and other annoyances outside your Firefox browser.

What I liked

Anti-tracking: Based on my in-house testing, AdLock provides strong protection against online tracking.

Private free extension: AdLock's privacy policy is another indicator of its commitment to privacy. It states that it gathers anonymous usage information, but this data is stored in your local storage and is not sold or shared with third parties. I feel good about its data usage, even with the free extension.

What I didn't like

Long subscription period: If you opt for a premium subscription and want to get the best value, you'll need to commit to a five-year subscription. There are also annual and monthly plans, but those come at a higher cost.

Limited free extension: AdLock includes a social media blocker, but I didn't like that it's available only at a premium price. Plus, the spyware blockers are only available on paid plans.

uBlock Origin: Best for unique add-ons

uBlock Origin is open-source software available on various browsers, offering the most customizable features of any brand I tested. Along with the basic services of blocking ads, trackers, and malicious URLs, this ad blocker offers several customizable features to help keep you safe while browsing the web.

Firefox's website for the uBlock Origin extension calls it "a wide-spectrum content blocker with CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature."

In line with the company's mantra, a user's personal study on GitHub found that uBlock Origin uses less computer memory than some leading brands.^[1] The benefits of reducing memory consumption include speed and page stability, so you can use this ad blocker without worrying about sacrificing your PC's memory.

What I liked

Good free ad blocking: uBlock Origin scored a 100/100 with AdBlock Tester, which is a perfect score. It blocked all the ads in the contextual advertising, analytics tools, banner advertising, and error monitoring categories.

Unique filters: I also liked that the extension offers a multitude of filter lists that you can enable or disable within your settings. These lists are additional options beyond their default settings, such as:

• EasyList Cookie: Blocks cookie banners, GDPR overlay windows, and other privacy-related notices.
• Fanboy Annoyances: Blocks social media content, pop-ups, and other annoyances to help reduce webpage load times.
• AdGuard Annoyances: Blocks cookie notifications, pop-ups, mobile app banners, widgets, and other annoyances.
• Dan Pollock's hosts file: Stops your PC from connecting to certain internet hosts to protect you from spyware and pop-up traps, prevent further tracking, and reduce bandwidth use.

What I didn't like

Growing pains: uBlock Origin released its JavaScript blocking feature in September 2018, taking the extension a step forward in blocking JavaScript that can hide malware or attempt exploits. While this was a positive step for the organization, some user reviews from the Firefox browser extension showed concern about the feature automatically blocking certain websites.

Luckily, the developer addressed the issue by fixing it in GitHub and responding directly to the review.

Bottom line

My top ad blockers for Firefox all blocked ads, trackers, and potential malware. To make the list, they all had to easily pass my hands-on tests while browsing the web with AdBlock Tester and Can You Block It. Based on my experience, the best ad blocker for Firefox is Surfshark CleanWeb. I actually use CleanWeb on my personal devices.
