What is Brave browser?
Brave is a free Chromium-based browser, so it works much like Chrome and supports many Chrome extensions. Brave Software is a private, San Francisco–based company co-founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich (the creator of JavaScript and a former Mozilla executive) and Brian Bondy. That privacy-first pedigree is a big part of why the browser is built the way it is.
Brave focuses on digital privacy by blocking ads, trackers, and many third-party cookies by default.

Unlike a virtual private network (VPN), Brave only protects your internet activity inside the browser. However, it does offer a separate Brave Firewall + VPN (a paid add-on powered by Guardian) that extends protection to your entire device. The Brave VPN can encrypt all your traffic and hide your IP address, not just your in-browser activity. It's an optional subscription not part of the free browser's built-in privacy tools, but it’s pricier than top VPNs.
Is Brave browser safe? What our testing showed
Short answer: Yes. Based on our research and hands-on testing, Brave is one of the safest mainstream browsers for users who want stronger privacy with minimal setup.
What stood out most was that Shields was enabled immediately after installation, so I didn't need to install extra extensions or change settings before browsing more privately.
I evaluated Brave in three key areas: how well Shields blocks ads and trackers, how it handles browser fingerprinting, and what data Brave collects.
1. Ad and tracker blocking (Shields)
Ads and trackers aren't just an annoyance. They're the thing most people say creeps them out online. In our survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, 87% said they'd seen hyper-personalized ads for something they'd recently looked up, and nearly 9 in 10 of them found it creepy or invasive. Only 2% didn't mind it at all. It's the exact behavior Brave's Shields is built to shut down, so I wanted to see how well it actually holds up.
Brave's Shields blocks ads, trackers, fingerprinting attempts, and many tracking cookies by default. In our testing, pages loaded quickly with noticeably fewer ads than Chrome, and I used industry-standard tests to measure its effectiveness.
AdBlock Tester
I tested how well Shields blocks unwanted ads. Brave scored 43/100 in AdBlock Tester with the Standard settings. Most contextual advertising tests passed, though one visibility check was inconclusive because the tester couldn't determine whether an ad was hidden or simply absent. Most failures occurred in the analytics, banner ad, and error-monitoring categories due to script execution and file-loading tests.
However, when I enabled Aggressive blocking, Brave scored 65/100, performing the best at blocking contextual advertising. It offered weaker protection against analytics tools, banner advertising, and error monitoring.
Despite the modest score, I didn't encounter visible ads or browsing issues during testing, suggesting the failed checks were largely related to background tracking scripts rather than the browsing experience.
Can You Block It?
I also tested Brave using Can You Block It, which simulates common advertising techniques found across websites. On Standard, Brave successfully blocked the ad blocker warning and banner ads but allowed an interstitial ad to load before the page. While this shows that Brave's default Shields settings don't stop every ad format, it still performed well against the most common advertising techniques.
With Aggressive blocking enabled, Brave passed 3/3, with no interstitial ads.
YouTube ads
Since many readers specifically want to know whether Brave blocks YouTube ads, I also streamed several videos with Shields enabled.
First, I streamed YouTube with Shields disabled to set the base. Ads appeared before playback as expected.
Then, I enabled Shields and disabled the script blocker so that the video could stream.
After re-enabling Shields, the same video played without pre-roll ads. I experienced minor playback lag and buffering but didn’t receive an ad blocker warning.
Overall, Brave passed the YouTube ads test and delivered a smooth viewing experience.
2. Fingerprinting protection
Advertising isn't the only way websites can identify visitors.
Many sites also use browser fingerprinting, a technique that combines details like your operating system, installed fonts, screen resolution, browser version, and hardware information to create a unique profile, even if you've blocked cookies.
Brave attempts to reduce this risk by randomizing or limiting the information websites can collect.
To test this, I ran Brave through BrowserLeaks, a site that reads the identifying signals your browser gives off. My canvas fingerprint came back as 100% unique, and it stayed the same each time I refreshed the page.
That might sound like the protection isn't working, but it's actually how Brave is built to behave. Brave uses a technique it calls farbling: rather than trying to make every user look identical, it adds a small amount of random noise to the signals a website can read, using a different value for every site and every new browsing session. Within a single session on one site, that value holds steady (which is why my fingerprint didn't change on refresh). But when I open Brave again, the next site I visit sees a different fingerprint.
That inconsistency is the whole point: it stops trackers from stitching your activity into one profile across the web.
So a "unique" result on a single test doesn't mean Brave left me exposed. Canvas is only one signal, and Brave is quietly changing what each site sees behind the scenes.
3. Data collection
One common question is, does Brave sell your data? The answer is no.
According to Brave's privacy documentation, the browser is designed to minimize data collection, with much of your browsing activity staying on your device instead of being sent to Brave's servers. Unlike a VPN, Brave isn't a "no-logs" product because it serves a different purpose: reducing tracking within the browser.
Brave says it doesn't collect or retain your browsing history. What it does process is tied to specific features, is mostly transient, and much of it only happens if you turn a feature on.
What Brave does collect or process
- Update & diagnostic counts. Brave tallies the number and type of update requests to produce aggregate stats; no individual user can be identified from them.
- Safe Browsing data. Partial URL hashes to check sites against Google's unsafe-site list. On desktop this is proxied to hide your IP; on Android/iOS your device IP can be exposed to Google (or Apple).
- Sync data (only if you enable Sync). Bookmarks, passwords, and other synced data, stored encrypted on Brave's cloud host (AWS); only you hold the decryption key.
- Approximate location (only if you allow a site). Sent to that website, not to Brave.
- Brave Rewards data (only if you enable Rewards). A "Rewards Payment ID" and country code; if you link a crypto custodial account, a custodian ID, deposit address, and IP addresses used for fraud prevention (recorded on U.S. servers). Even then, Brave says it can't see your browsing history or which specific ads you viewed.
- Brave Ads. Ad matching happens on your device; Brave receives only anonymized interaction events, nothing that identifies you.
- Email Aliases (only if you use it). Your primary email and any aliases you generate; limited metrics/logs deleted within 14 days; Brave doesn't read email content beyond spam/virus filtering.
- Brave Wallet (only if you use it). Wallet addresses and transaction data passed to third-party providers to reach the blockchain (IP proxied/stripped by Brave; third-party on-ramps may capture more).
- Personal data you choose to give. E.g., when you create a Brave Account or subscribe to a premium product.
During testing, I didn't notice any signs of excessive data collection or unnecessary account requirements. Most privacy features worked immediately after installation, making Brave a strong choice for users who want better privacy without relying on multiple extensions. If you do install add-ons, it's still worth learning whether browser extensions are safe, as poorly designed extensions can compromise your privacy.
How to use Brave's privacy features (and turn on stronger protection)
Brave's Shields are enabled by default, but a few settings can further improve your privacy.
1. Set Shields to Aggressive
Go to Settings > Shields > Trackers & ads blocking > Aggressive for stronger ad and tracker blocking. You can also adjust protection for individual sites using the lion (Shields) icon.
2. Enable fingerprinting protection
In Settings > Shields, turn on Block fingerprinting to make it harder for websites to identify your device based on browser and system characteristics.
3. Enable HTTPS upgrades
Leave HTTPS upgrades enabled to automatically use secure connections whenever available. Change the setting to Strict for stronger protection.
4. Block scripts when needed
For suspicious websites, use Lion icon > Advanced controls > Block Scripts. Keep in mind this may break some website features.
The crypto question: Brave Rewards and BAT
Brave includes an optional feature called Brave Rewards, which lets users earn BAT (Basic Attention Token) by viewing privacy-focused ads. According to Brave, these ads are matched locally on your device rather than through centralized tracking.
The key point is that Brave Rewards is completely optional. You don't need to create a crypto wallet, earn BAT, or enable ads to use Brave's privacy features. During our testing, all core protections worked without using Rewards.
If you're only looking for a more private browser, you can safely leave Rewards turned off.
What Brave can't do
Brave offers strong browser privacy, but it has limits. It blocks some ads and trackers inside the browser, but it doesn't offer complete protection.
