How We Test, Rate, and Review Data Removal Software

We provide an in-depth look at how All About Cookies tests, rates, and scores data removal software.

We've evaluated 10+ data removal services using a consistent, hands-on methodology designed to show you what actually works. First, we sign up one to four weeks before our formal testing begins. That way, we let each service do its job, including scanning the web for your personal information and contacting data brokers to request removal.

The best services reach out to hundreds of data broker and people-search sites, not just a handful of well-known ones. We also look beyond the initial removal request, because data brokers frequently re-add your information after removing it. Services that continuously monitor and follow up are more valuable than those that treat removal as a one-time task

Our final ratings weigh core features, extras, customer service, value, and our editor's score. For a full breakdown of our criteria and scoring, see our complete data removal testing methodology.

Core features (50%)

Core features carry the most weight in our ratings because they determine whether a data removal service actually does its job. We evaluate every service against the same set of criteria: how many data broker sites it scans and whether it provides custom removals for any sites that aren't covered.

Maximum number of data brokers covered

What it is: The number of data broker sites a service scans is the single most important factor in how effective it will be. A service that only reaches a handful of sites leaves significant gaps. There are thousands of data brokers, and the landscape shifts constantly as new sites launch and others rebrand.

How we rate it:

  • Best: Scans at least 200 data broker sites
  • Worst: Scans less than a dozen data broker sites

Custom removals

What it is: Custom removals allow you to flag a specific site the service doesn't currently cover, so its team can handle the removal for you. This matters because data broker sites appear and disappear regularly and no automated system catches everything.

How we rate it:

  • Best: Provides a clear, accessible way to submit a custom removal request and promises prompt action
  • Worst: No option to submit custom removals

Editor's score (25%)

Some of the most important qualities of a data removal service don't fit neatly into the rest of our categories. Our editor's score captures everything that falls outside our core testing criteria, like security practices, company reputation, and overall user experience.

Security practices matter because you're handing over your personal information to remove it from the web. We look for two-factor or multi-factor authentication options, and evaluate the encryption methods used to protect your data in transit and at rest.

Company reputation is harder to quantify, but shouldn't be ignored. Some data removal companies have been found to have ties with people-search sites, which automatically makes us distrust them. A service asking you to trust it with your personal data should have a clean, transparent history.

Finally, user experience covers the overall quality of interacting with the service. We open the dashboard and look for all the advertised features and functions. We also take notes on how easy it was to find everything promised and if those features worked.

How we rate it:

  • Best: A clean, modern interface where all the features are easily accessible and a commitment to your data security
  • Worst: An outdated or overly technical website and a history of poor security measures

Extras (10%)

The best data removal services go beyond finding and removing your information; they also layer on additional privacy protections for your data. We evaluate each service on four extras: privacy reports, dark web monitoring, identity monitoring, and family plan availability.

How we rate each extra

  • Best: Four points for including privacy reports, dark web monitoring, identity monitoring, and family plans
  • Worst: No extras included

Privacy reports

What it is: These reports give you a measurable view of your exposure online. We look for services that generate reports automatically and update them as removals are completed, so you can see your privacy improving over time rather than just taking the service's word for it.

Dark web monitoring

What it is: By including dark web monitoring, data removal services can check whether your personal information has appeared in known data breaches or is being traded on dark web marketplaces. Since data brokers and dark web exposure often go hand in hand, services that monitor both provide meaningfully stronger protection.

Identity monitoring

What it is: Identity monitoring watches for signs that your personal information is actively being misused; this includes red flags like new accounts opened in your name or unusual activity tied to your Social Security number. Not all data removal services include this, but those that do offer a more complete safety net.

Family plans

What it is: Family plans allow you to extend coverage to a spouse, partner, or other household members. Given that family members are often targeted as a way to get to you, we consider this a meaningful differentiator rather than just a convenience feature.

Customer service (10%)

What it is: We contact each service's customer support team with a realistic problem, and evaluate both how easy it is to get in touch, how long it takes to receive a response, and whether the issue actually gets resolved.

How we rate it:

  • Best: Offers multiple ways to reach support, such as live chat, email, and phone
  • Worst: No findable contact option

Value (5%)

A data removal service is only worth its price if it's actually doing the work. Value isn't just about finding the lowest monthly fee; it's about what you're getting for that fee relative to what competitors charge for similar coverage.

Lowest viable price

What it is: Data removal services typically charge between $3 and $20 per month, with meaningful differences in what each tier covers. Some services offer a free tier with limited functionality, while others require an annual commitment to unlock their best pricing.

How we rate it:

  • Best: A robust product with lots of features with a monthly fee under $6.00/mo
  • Worst: A product with a monthly fee of $40.00/mo or more that offers very little

How we calculate our ratings

Individual categories hold a certain amount of weight. After we test the product, we enter a score for each category that’s then calculated, and the average determines the star rating. The score is based on the factors we listed above.

Decision factor Weight What's covered
Our experience 25% The ease of use and intuitiveness while testing the product
Value 5% Lowest plan price
Core features50% Number of data brokers scanned, inclusion of custom removals
Extras10% Inclusion of privacy reports, dark web monitoring, identity monitoring, and/or family plans
Customer service 10% Number of methods available for human support

Our star rating system allows us to compare products across our site to bring you the most affordable, reliable, robust, and usable products on the market. It can be confusing trying to purchase software, so we make it simple by showing you the best data removal software available.
