VeePN Review 2024: Not the Best Basic VPN Service

We found the VeePN platform to be easy to navigate, but the functionality gave us some problems. VeePN touts a few features, including a kill switch, servers optimized for streaming, and ad blocking. However, it’s a bit pricey compared to its competitors, and we struggled to get all the features, including the kill switch, to work correctly.

Overall, VeePN wasn’t as effective as other VPNs we’ve tested. We'll break down VeePN's features, test results, pricing, and more below. 

Overview

Our experience with VeePN

We navigated to the VeePN website to download the Windows app for testing. It was simple to set up and navigate, but we started having issues once we tried connecting to a server.

We started by selecting the optimal location option. VeePN showed it was in the process of connecting but never seemed to make the connection with the server. We tried connecting to other server locations, but the results were the same.

From VeePN's customer support page, we found an FAQ with troubleshooting tips on what to do if you're not able to connect to its servers. We tried logging out and logging back in, changing protocol, and even uninstalling and reinstalling the app but nothing happened. We opted to test with our Macbook, which is when VeePN finally started working. 

During our initial testing, we also tested out the kill switch, which gave us lackluster results. When we initiated the kill switch, we couldn’t access the internet. However, we were connected to the VPN, and from our testing, the VPN was working. We weren’t able to figure out a solution to why this was happening. 

Although we like how user-friendly VeePN's interface is, all the issues we encountered are probably too much trouble. 

Who is VeePN best for?

• Recommended for anyone looking for basic VPN protection.

Overall, VeePN is a good solution for someone looking for basic VPN protection. If you’re just using a VPN to access a different Netflix library, VeePN could work. 

However, if you’re worried about your internet activity being exposed, we’d recommend a different VPN that includes more safety features. We had trouble getting VeePN's kill switch to work. 

VeePN prices and subscriptions

Choosing a plan with VeePN is easy because it only has one subscription type. The cost of VeePN is cheaper if you pay for a one-year or two-year plan. To save money on a VPN, select the two-year plan for the best pricing.

VeePN features

Overall, VeePN does have a few features to improve your VPN use. VeePN offers 2,500+ servers, including servers optimized for streaming. You can also use a double VPN with VeePN, which gives you greater anonymity while using the service.

While VeePN boasts some common features, such as a kill switch and split tunneling, we struggled to get them to work correctly. In the case of split tunneling, we never discovered how to use the feature.

Server count and countries

VeePN has a robust list of server locations, allowing you to find a server that works best for your needs. It also has server locations in 60 countries, so you can access geo-restricted content like Netflix streaming libraries easily.

We like that it offers servers specifically for streaming and for double VPN. The streaming servers should help you keep your streaming smooth without lag or glitches. The double VPN servers will cover your connection with two servers instead of one for additional security. 

No-logs policy and headquarters

In its privacy policy, VeePN outlines the information it collects. VeePN collects data when a new customer signs up for an account, including your name, email address, and payment information.

VeePN also collects information about how you use your device, such as the type of device, how often you use the VPN, or what features are used most often. VeePN says that this information is used to improve user experience, manage your account, and communicate with users.

Most VPNs collect this type of information for normal operations. The usage data gives companies insights on how to improve their product or create new features.

VeePN doesn't keep usage logs and it doesn't collect IP addresses or log any of your activity while using the VPN.

VeePN is also headquartered in Panama, which is outside of the Eyes alliances and doesn't have data retention laws. 

Kill switch

VeePN does offer kill switch functionality, which can be turned on in the privacy settings of the app. A kill switch gives you peace of mind that you won’t unknowingly use the internet if your VPN gets disconnected. The kill switch will stop your internet access if the VPN becomes disconnected. 

While VeePN offers this feature, when we turned on the kill switch, we would lose internet access, even when other testing showed that we were connected to the VPN. We were not able to test the kill switch fully because of this issue.

Split tunneling

VeePN’s website touts that the service includes split tunneling functionality. However, we were unable to find any information on how to use split tunneling with the VeePN app on macOS.

VPN protocols

You have several protocol options when using VeePN, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard, and Shadowsocks protocols. You can easily swap protocol from the general settings tab. 

NetGuard

VeePN has its own ad blocker feature known as NetGuard. It can help you avoid malicious websites, stop trackers, and remove pop-up ads for a better browsing experience. 

On the Windows and macOS apps, you can toggle on various switches depending on what you want to block. This is the same on the browser extension as well. On iOS, you can just turn on the NetGuard feature in your settings. 

VeePN test results

When we evaluate a VPN, we look at several ways the VPN impacts your daily activities, including how the VPN affects internet speed, if the VPN allows you to stream from Netflix or other platforms, and if the VPN is truly protecting your IP address and website usage. 

Overall, VeePN worked well when connecting to a U.S. server, and we didn’t see a big drop in internet speeds. However, Australian servers dropped internet speeds by more than 90% when connected.

We conducted these tests on a Macbook from a physical location in the U.S.

Speed tests

• Speed test results: VeePN dropped our speed drastically with every server we tried.

We found VeePN to slow down our internet to a surprising degree, even with the U.S. server. We specifically selected the optimal location server but noted that our download speed still dropped by about 30%. 

The U.K. and Australian servers had the biggest impact on our internet speeds, slowing them down significantly. This is to be expected the further the server you select is from your physical location. If you want to connect to a server in the U.K. or Australia, you may want to test different locations to see which offers the highest speeds. 

Our latency, or ping, also increased significantly with every server location. With high latency like VeePN's results, webpages won't load as quickly, your streams will need to buffer more often, and lag will interrupt your gaming.

Netflix tests

• Netflix test results: VeePN worked well to access Netflix in several different countries.

If you’re looking to access new streaming content, a VPN can give you access to geo-restricted libraries across the world. Streaming services like Netflix have different libraries based on your location, so there may be titles available in Australia that you can’t stream in the U.S.

Not all VPNs work well with streaming services, and, in some cases, the streaming service may block IP addresses that are known to be part of a VPN. With VeePN, we had no issues accessing Netflix with any of the servers we tested. 

The VPN also designates certain servers as optimized for streaming, so you can pick the server that will work best for your needs.

DNS leak tests

• DNS leak test results: VeePN passed its DNS leak test.

A DNS leak test gives information, including your location and IP address. When connected to the VPN, your device should be using a DNS different from that of your internet service provider.

No leaks were detected in VeePN’s DNS leak protection tests. 

WebRTC leak test

• WebRTC leak test results: VeePN passed its WebRTC leak test.

We also conducted a WebRTC leak test that checks to see if your IP address is being exposed while connected to the VPN. 

The WebRTC test is based on Web Real-Time Communication, which is a technology used for video chat and voice services. The WebRTC test shows if your VPN is still displaying your actual IP address when connected to the VPN.

Kill switch test

• Kill switch test results: We were unable to test VeePN's kill switch.

A kill switch protects your device from unexpected VPN connection drops. If you're using public Wi-Fi and your VPN fails, a kill switch will stop your internet entirely so your device won't be exposed to unwanted third parties. 

Although VeePN has a kill switch, we couldn't find the option on the macOS app. Considering the issues we've had with VeePN's kill switch in the past, we're not confident it would pass this test.

VeePN customer support

VeePN’s customer support options are easy to find, and users get quite a few options to find solutions to any issues. However, we had some issues with the live chat. 

Live chat

Since we had some connection issues when using VeePN, we tried out the live chat to see if we could get some help.

When discussing our issue with the live chat agent, they sent over instructions for a solution. However, the boilerplate answer was missing key information for completing the suggested fix. 

When we asked the live agent about this, they couldn’t give us any further instruction outside of what they had already said. The live agent couldn’t provide a solution to our connection issues.

Email

VeePN claims to have 24/7 email support as well. You can either send an email to support@veepn.com or submit a support ticket on the site. 

Knowledge base

VeePN also has several online guides you can use to fix issues on your own. You can choose the troubleshoot now option, set up VeePN option, or search through the support articles. 

VeePN alternatives

Since we had a few problems with getting VeePN’s features working correctly, we recommend an alternative. We’d suggest using one of these VPNs if you need to ensure your information is encrypted because of censorship or other concerns.

FAQs

Bottom line: Is VeePN good?

Overall, VeePN is a basic VPN. You can use the service to mask your IP address and encrypt your internet usage. 

However, we struggled to get some functions to work correctly, such as the kill switch. Since many of these features were difficult to find or didn’t work, we wouldn’t suggest VeePN over other VPNs. We’d recommend using a VPN with features like a kill switch that works properly.

Along with performance issues, VeePN doesn’t have the most competitive pricing when compared to our recommend alternatives, and it doesn’t boast robust features in some cases. 

VeePN may be a good VPN for the basics, but there are more reliable VPNs available with more competitive pricing.
