VeePN Review 2024: Not the Best Basic VPN Service

Whether you’re looking to access new streaming libraries, protect your internet activity while on public Wi-Fi, or circumvent internet restrictions, a virtual private network can help. A VPN adds an extra layer of anonymity and security to your internet activity.

We found the VeePN platform to be easy to navigate, but the functionality gave us some problems. VeePN touts a few features, including a kill switch, servers optimized for streaming, and ad blocking. However, it’s a bit pricey compared to its competitors, and we struggled to get all the features, including the kill switch, to work correctly.

Overall, VeePN wasn’t as effective as other VPNs we’ve tested.

Overall, VeePN is a good solution for someone looking for basic VPN protection. If you’re just using a VPN to access a different Netflix library, VeePN could work. However, if you’re worried about your internet activity being exposed, we’d recommend a different VPN that includes more safety features.

Here are a couple of VPN providers that we’ve tested and found to be more reliable than VeePN. As we’ve mentioned, we had a few problems with some of VeePN’s features working correctly. Unless you’re simply looking for a VPN to access geo-restricted content, we recommend an alternative. We’d suggest using one of these VPNs if you need to ensure your information is encrypted because of censorship or other concerns.

• Surfshark: Surfshark is a reliable VPN boasting several additional products, such as antivirus software, private web browser, and data breach monitoring. Surfshark allows you to use the VPN on unlimited devices, and you’ll have access to servers in more than 100 countries.

  Surfshark allows you to select which internet traffic you want to be routed through the VPN and which ones you don’t with its Bypasser feature. For added security, you can also use Multihop to connect to multiple servers for added encryption.

• CyberGhost: With more than 6,800 servers, CyberGhost is another great VPN. CyberGhost has a no-logs policy and AES-256 encryption to keep your internet traffic safe. You can also connect up to seven devices simultaneously.

  CyberGhost has servers optimized for different use cases, including streaming, torrenting, and gaming. CyberGhost also includes a kill switch and split tunneling.

• Private Internet Access (PIA): Private Internet Access is a reputable VPN. PIA is open source, giving anyone the ability to inspect the source code, which can improve response time to any issues or security concerns. PIA also offers split tunneling and kill switch functionality. You can use PIA on unlimited devices, and you can also use PIA to block ads, trackers, and malware.

VeePN features

Overall, VeePN does have a few features to improve your VPN use. VeePN offers more than 2,500 servers, including servers optimized for streaming. You can also use a double VPN with VeePN, which gives you greater anonymity while using the service.

While VeePN boasts some common features, such as a kill switch and split tunneling, we struggled to get them to work correctly. In the case of split tunneling, we never discovered how to use the feature.

Other VPNs may offer features such as split tunneling, which allows you to choose which information is routed through the VPN and which is not. You may also find P2P servers with other VPNs, which allow you to share files directly with other devices while being protected by the VPN.

VeePN has a robust list of server locations, allowing you to find a server that works best for your needs. It also has server locations in 60 countries, so you can access geo-restricted content like Netflix streaming libraries easily.

It’s critical that your VPN protects your anonymity. In its privacy policy, VeePN outlines the information it collects. VeePN collects data when a new customer signs up for an account, including your name, email address, and payment information.

VeePN also collects information about how you use your device, such as the type of device, how often you use the VPN, or what features are used most often. VeePN says that this information is used to improve user experience, manage your account, and communicate with users.

Most VPNs collect this type of information for normal operations. The usage data gives companies insights on how to improve their product or create new features.

VeePN does not keep usage logs. VeePN does not collect IP addresses or log any of your activity while using the VPN.

Security features

You’ll find a few security features available with VeePN, including a kill switch, double VPN, and automatic Wi-Fi protection. With VeePN’s automatic Wi-Fi protection, you can ask VeePN to connect automatically when connected to an unsecured or secured Wi-Fi network.

VeePN also offers privacy settings that can help improve your browsing experience. VeePN can block ads, malicious websites, and online trackers. These settings can easily be turned on from inside the VeePN app.

Here are a few more security and privacy features within VeePN.

• Split tunneling: VeePN’s website touts that the service includes split tunneling functionality. However, we were unable to find any information on how to use split tunneling with the VeePN app on macOS.
• Kill switch: VeePN does offer kill switch functionality, which can be turned on in the privacy settings of the app. A kill switch gives you peace of mind that you won’t unknowingly use the internet if your VPN gets disconnected. The kill switch will stop your internet access if the VPN becomes disconnected. While VeePN offers this feature, when we turned on the kill switch, we would lose internet access, even when other testing showed that we were connected to the VPN. We were not able to test the kill switch fully because of this issue.
• VPN protocols: You have several protocol options when using VeePN, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard, and Shadowsocks protocols.

Our experience with VeePN

Overall, we found VeePN to be simple to navigate. You can easily connect to servers all around the world, and VeePN also delineates servers that are optimized for streaming. While finding servers to connect to is easy, we did have some difficulty getting or staying connected.

From the settings tab, you can enable VeePN to automatically connect, and you can set your preferred server location and your preferred VPN protocol.

We tested out the kill switch, which gave us lackluster results. When we initiated the kill switch, we couldn’t access the internet. However, we were connected to the VPN, and from our testing, the VPN was working. We weren’t able to figure out a solution to why this was happening.

While we did most of our testing on a MacBook Air, we also tried out VeePN on an iPad, and we found the interface was easy to navigate, just like on a desktop. But we couldn’t get the kill switch to work from the iPad either.

When we evaluate a VPN, we look at several ways the VPN impacts your daily activities, including how the VPN affects internet speed, if the VPN allows you to stream from Netflix or other platforms, and if the VPN is truly protecting your IP address and website usage. Overall, VeePN worked well when connecting to a U.S. server, and we didn’t see a big drop in internet speeds. However, Australian servers dropped internet speeds by more than 90% when connected.

We conducted these tests on a MacBook Air connected to Wi-Fi in Salt Lake City.

• VeePN speed test results: Overall, VeePN kept internet speeds up with the exception of Australia servers.

We had a pretty good experience with internet speeds when testing VeePN. Our internet speeds did dip when we connected to VeePN, which is to be expected, but our internet was still fast enough in the United States and Europe to stream and handle all our internet activities. The Australian servers had the biggest impact on our internet speeds, slowing them down significantly. If you want to connect to a server in Australia, you may want to test different locations to see which offers the highest speeds.

Surprisingly, we saw faster upload speeds while connected to VeePN servers in the U.S. and Europe. Our upload speeds dropped sharply when we connected to an Australian server, but our latency decreased. We can’t explain it either, but we’ll take a win where we can.

• VeePN Netflix test results: VeePN worked well to access Netflix in several different countries.

If you’re looking to access new streaming content, a VPN can give you access to geo-restricted libraries across the world. Streaming services like Netflix have different libraries based on your location, so there may be titles available in Australia that you can’t stream in the U.S.

Not all VPNs work well with streaming services, and, in some cases, the streaming service may block IP addresses that are known to be part of a VPN. With VeePN, we had no issues accessing Netflix with any of the servers we tested. You can watch Netflix with VeePN and unblock regional content. The VPN also designates certain servers as optimized for streaming, so you can pick the server that will work best for your needs.

DNS and WebRTC leak tests

• VeePN DNS leak test results: VeePN passed the DNS leak test.
• VeePN WebRTC leak test results: There were no leaks detected with the WebRTC leak test.

No leaks were detected in VeePN’s DNS leak protection tests. A DNS leak test gives information, including your location and IP address. When connected to the VPN, your device should be using a DNS different from that of your internet service provider.

We also conducted a WebRTC leak test that checks to see if your IP address is being exposed while connected to the VPN. The WebRTC test is based on Web Real-Time Communication, which is a technology used for video chat and voice services. The WebRTC test shows if your VPN is still displaying your actual IP address when connected to the VPN.

VeePN customer support

VeePN’s customer support options are easy to find, and users get quite a few options to find solutions to any issues. Since we had some connection issues when using VeePN, we tried out the live chat to see if we could get some help.

When discussing my issue with the live chat agent, they sent over instructions for a solution. However, the boilerplate answer was missing key information for completing the suggested fix. When we asked the live agent about this, they couldn’t give us any further instruction outside of what they had already said. The live agent couldn’t provide a solution to my connection issues.

To solve my issue, we ended up deleting VeePN from our computer and then reinstalling it.

Choosing a plan with VeePN is easy because it only has one subscription type. The cost of VeePN is cheaper if you pay for a one-year or five-year plan. To save money on a VPN, select the five-year plan for the best pricing.

Bottom line: Is VeePN good?

Overall, VeePN is a basic VPN. You can use the service to mask your IP address and encrypt your internet usage. However, we struggled to get some functions to work correctly, such as the kill switch. Since many of these features were difficult to find or didn’t work, we wouldn’t suggest VeePN over other VPNs. We’d recommend using a VPN with features like a kill switch that works properly.

Along with performance issues, VeePN doesn’t have the most competitive pricing when compared to the best VPN services available, and it doesn’t boast robust features in some cases. VeePN may be a good VPN for the basics, but there are more reliable VPNs available with more competitive pricing.
