Who it’s best for

NordVPN is one of the best virtual private networks on the market. It offers high security, strict privacy features, fast speed, VPN protocols, and strong encryption. If you’re looking to access specialty servers with a fast connection, NordVPN may be your best option.

What we liked

NordVPN has an extensive server network. It offers 6,300+ VPN servers in 111 countries, so it can unblock nearly any gaming or betting site. It also provides strong AES-256 encryption and a strict no-logs policy. Based in Panama, NordVPN isn’t obligated to save user data, which is a privacy feature we especially like. Additionally, NordVPN has been independently audited to verify no saved logs. We also like that NordVPN uses both the OpenVPN and NordLynx protocols. NordLynx is built around WireGuard. WireGuard and OpenVPN are considered two of the strongest protocols available.

In addition to its advanced privacy and security features, NordVPN is loaded with additional features like a kill switch, split tunneling, threat protection, and Meshnet. Threat protection automatically blocks risky websites, while Meshnet links remote devices over a secure VPN connection. These features make it perfect for playing video games with friends across the globe or working on projects with coworkers. Plus, NordVPN offers a Double VPN, redirecting your traffic through two VPN servers for an extra layer of encryption.

A screenshot of NordVPN specialty servers settings

We conducted three tests to judge whether NordVPN works as intended — a speed test, a DNS leak test, and a WebRTC leak test — to see how It performs regarding internet speed and overall privacy. NordVPN passed all three tests with flying colors.

What we didn’t like

NordVPN is an ultra-secure VPN provider with many features, but it costs slightly more than other VPN services. NordVPN does offer an extremely reasonable plan at $3.99/mo, but that comes with a 2-year commitment. A monthly plan with the option of canceling at any time is $12.99/mo, which just may be too cost-prohibitive for some users.

  • Headquarters in Nine Eyes Alliance

Who it’s best for

Surfshark is the best value VPN. It is an affordable, high-speed VPN with tons of bonus features, like the ability to streamline libraries and handle unlimited simultaneous connections — a rare find in the VPN world. It offers many amenities for a fraction of the cost of some other VPNs, catering to those looking for a budget-friendly VPN option.

What we liked

For those looking to save money on a VPN, Surfshark is a secure option. Surfshark offers about half the number of VPN servers NordVPN offers — around 3,200 servers in 100 countries. While the number of servers is significantly less than NordVPN's, you’ll likely find a fast server in every country you need. It offers top-notch AES-256 encryption with secure protocols, such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2, keeping your activity private and secure.

Surfshark also offers a strict no-logs policy and has been independently audited by Deloitte. In addition to extensive privacy and security features, Surfshark is equipped with many bonus features, such as CleanWeb, static IP, rotating IP, kill switch, split tunneling, and multi-hop, which connects you to the Surfshark VPN through two countries.

CleanWeb hides in the Surfshark VPN settings — we wish it was more obvious when this was toggled on or off.

In our VPN tests, Surfshark mostly passed with flying colors, but it struggled in some speed areas, as discussed below.

What we didn’t like

In our DNS leak test and WebRTC leak test, Surfshark passed unequivocally. However, in our speed test, Surfshark struggled significantly in Australia. This is not entirely surprising due to the distance, but the speed results were drastic.

While Surfshark has a strict no-logs policy and has been independently audited, it is headquartered in the Netherlands, part of the Nine Eye Alliance. Nine Eyes countries share information they collect with the other alliances, which is not ideal for privacy-minded users.

  • Hides intrusive display ads when browsing the web, improving page speed and easing data usage on mobile

  • Enjoy no activity logs, malicious sites and trackers protection, and more on up to 8 devices
  • More expensive than NordVPN, Surfshark, and CyberGhost

Who it’s best for

ExpressVPN is a leader in the VPN space due to its fast, secure connections and top-of-the-line privacy standards. For users looking for an extremely fast VPN, ExpressVPN is a good choice.

What we liked

ExpressVPN lives up to its name, providing high-speed, private internet connection thanks to a no-logs policy, verified by 12 third-party audits. On top of that, ExpressVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, a territory with no data retention laws. ExpressVPN uses AES-256 encryption, and in addition to OpenVPN, L2TP, and IKEv2 protocols, it also offers its own protocol, Lightway, designed to run faster while using less battery.

ExpressVPN uses its proprietary Lightway protocol, while NordVPN uses its NordLynx protocol.

ExpressVPN uses its proprietary Lightway protocol, while NordVPN uses its NordLynx protocol.

Another feature of ExpressVPN that impressed us is its TrustedServer tech, which means data is stored on RAM instead of hard drives. Since RAM requires power, the memory is wiped clear if the VPN server is ever turned off. ExpressVPN has server locations in 105 countries, which is comparatively higher than NordVPN and Surfshark.

Like NordVPN and Surfshark, ExpressVPN also offers a kill switch, split tunneling, a threat manager to block apps and websites from tracking your online activity, and MediaStreamer, a smart DNS feature that helps you spoof your location on devices where you can’t install VPN software.

What we didn’t like

One of ExpressVPN's main pain points is the price. This service is on the higher end compared to top competitors, though you do get a lot of features for your money.

ExpressVPN also doesn’t disclose its server count, though server locations are available globally in 105 countries.

Honorable mentions

If you’re looking for more budget-friendly VPN services to access PrizePicks but still want all the bells and whistles, here are some well-researched and tested PrizePicks VPN alternatives we’d recommend:

  • Private Internet Access (PIA): This affordable VPN offers unlimited connected devices and servers in 91 countries and all 50 U.S. states. PIA includes extra features like a kill switch, split tunneling, Smart DNS, and multi-hop. It also offers strong VPN protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPsec, as well as a no-logs policy. But if privacy is your main concern, keep in mind that PIA is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, part of the Five Eyes Alliance.

  • CyberGhost: CyberGhost is another affordable, secure VPN with the ability to unblock streaming sites, but our experience with the VPN wasn’t always seamless. And while CyberGhost offers many VPN features, it lacks the split tunneling ability many other VPNS have. But CyberGhost does boast 11,700+ servers in 100 countries.

Get CyberGhost | Read Our CyberGhost Review
  • Bitdefender VPN: Bitdefender is a good VPN option with a strong server count — 4,000+ servers in 50+ countries — making your desired content easier to access. It includes extra features like a kill switch, ad and tracker blockers, and split tunneling. Like its competitors, Bitdefender unblocks popular streaming services, but this VPN service also offers a free plan.

How we tested the best VPNs for PrizePicks

When testing VPNs to determine the best VPN for PrizePicks, we looked at a number of different factors, including server network, connection speed, additional security tools, and privacy policies. These factors are critical in unblocking PrizePicks and making the gaming platform more accessible. See what we deemed critical features in our testing:

  • Server network: A reliable VPN for online gambling should have plentiful servers where PrizePicks is legal. The more servers there are, the better chance you have to ensure a secure connection.
  • Connection speed: It’s not uncommon for a VPN to reduce your connection speed, which is less than ideal when gambling online. We looked for VPNs whose connection speed didn’t suffer when connected to servers.
  • Additional security tools: Online gambling comes with risks, and we wanted a VPN that bolstered online security. We looked for features like military-grade encryption, kill switches, and others to enhance online privacy and security.
  • Privacy policy: We’re looking for VPNs that offer no-log policies, preferably in areas with no data storage laws.
