Best Overall
Best for Multiple Connections
No matter where you are in the world, using a reliable virtual private network (VPN) is one of the most effective ways to protect your online privacy. In Taiwan, a VPN can help encrypt your internet traffic, secure your connection on public Wi-Fi, and access geo-restricted websites and streaming platforms while maintaining a consistent browsing experience.
After hands-on testing and performance analysis, we found that NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN are the best VPNs for Taiwan. NordVPN stands out as the best overall option thanks to its strong security features, fast local servers, and competitive long-term pricing. Surfshark is ideal for households or travelers with multiple devices, while ExpressVPN delivers top-tier speeds and reliability.
Below, we break down our testing results, explain how each VPN performs in Taiwan, and help you choose the best option based on your needs — whether that’s privacy, streaming access, speed, or device coverage.

NordVPN: Best overall
Who it’s best for
NordVPN is a great solution for encrypting your internet activity, and it's our #1 rated VPN overall for privacy and security. Even with NordVPN’s Standard plan, you’ll gain access to malware protection and a threat and ad blocker. Nord also offers over 100 Taiwanese servers so that you can ensure a fast VPN connection.
What we liked
Extra tools: Not only does NordVPN have a password manager and cloud storage, but the VPN also comes with quite a few extra features, like dark web monitoring as well as malicious ad and file-blocking through Threat Protection.
Advanced features: NordVPN also provides a kill switch to keep you protected even if the VPN disconnects. You can add extra security to your browsing by using multi-hop, which means your internet traffic is encrypted two times through two different servers. You can use NordVPN’s split tunneling feature if you want to direct some of your internet traffic through the VPN while leaving other traffic unencrypted.
What we didn’t like
Confusing plans: NordVPN has features, but the plans are confusing since there are three tiers with three payment options each. You must commit to a two-year contract to get the best pricing. If you’re looking for a solution for a month or two, NordVPN starts at $12.99/mo, which is the most expensive monthly price of our three best VPNs for Taiwan.
Meshnet discontinued: We also don't like that NordVPN removed Meshnet, which allowed you to create a local, private, encrypted network and easily connect to devices anywhere in the world. Meshnet was a great tool if you wanted to leave a computer at home but still needed to access files while abroad, whether you’re based in Taiwan or just visiting. You could set it up before you left to access those files directly.

NordVPN test results
To assess NordVPN’s performance, we conducted tests to review impact on speed, ability to unblock Netflix's geo-restrictions, and protection against potential data leaks.
NordVPN passed all three tests with flying colors. It has minimal impact on our speeds, unblocked all the Netflix libraries we tested, and prevented all data leaks.

Surfshark: Best for multiple connections
Who it’s best for
If you’re looking for a VPN to use on multiple devices, Surfshark is an excellent solution. Surfshark allows for unlimited simultaneous connections, so everyone and every device in your household can use one VPN account to connect. It also has an extensive server network of 4,500+ servers around the world, along with Taiwanese servers.
What we liked
Easy to use: Based on our independent testing, we think Surfshark is a great VPN solution that's well worth the price. Connecting to Surfshark servers didn’t drastically affect our internet speeds, and it was simple to find server locations and connect. Most importantly, Surfshark is easy to use, simple to connect in 100 countries, and packed with features to ensure you're protected while browsing the internet.
Advanced features: Some of Surfshark’s security features include:
- Kill switch: Blocks your internet connection if your VPN is disconnected
- CleanWeb: Browse the internet with this ad-free browser
- Bypasser: Allows you to choose which internet traffic goes through a VPN
All-in-one option: While Surfshark’s Starter plan gives you full access to its VPN, the higher-tier Surfshark One gives you access to other cybersecurity features, including an antivirus solution, identity monitoring, and a private search tool.
What we didn’t like
Headquarters: Surfshark does have one negative — the company’s headquarters is in the Netherlands. While the Netherlands has no policies limiting internet freedoms, the country is part of the Nine Eyes alliance. The Nine Eyes Alliance is a group of countries that have pledged to share information on matters of national security, so there's a chance that Surfshark user privacy could be compromised if the Netherlands needed to share information with another member.

Surfshark test results
We conducted several tests on Surfshark to assess its performance: speed tests to measure impact, Netflix tests to unblock geo-restrictions, and leak tests to determine privacy protection.
Surfshark went above and beyond, causing minimal impact on our download speeds and unblocked all the Netflix libraries we tested. It also recently passed all three leak tests.

ExpressVPN: Best for speed
Who it’s best for
ExpressVPN is perfect if you’re looking for a reliable VPN option for a Taiwanese IP address. Not only does ExpressVPN have a server location in Taiwan, but it has servers in more than 100 countries around the world.
We suggest using ExpressVPN if you’re a heavy VPN user looking for ample speed and security. ExpressVPN uses a proprietary VPN protocol called Lightway, which the company says is built for a “smooth and secure experience.”
What we liked
Unique features: ExpressVPN’s innovation and features are why we like it. One feature we like is the Threat Manager, which automatically blocks sites or apps from communicating with trackers or malicious sites. ExpressVPN also has its own proprietary VPN protocol called Lightway. It was created for speedy, secure, and reliable connections and is available on ExpressVPN’s apps for your computer, smartphone, and routers.
Split tunneling: One handy feature for international VPN use is split tunneling, which allows you to route some internet traffic through the VPN while other internet activity can be unencrypted outside of the VPN. All three of the best VPNs for Taiwan come with split tunneling, which gives you greater flexibility while using your VPN. You may want to have your Netflix traffic routed through a VPN in one country while also needing access to Taiwanese content.
Compatible: ExpressVPN has VPN apps for numerous devices, including macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android, and it’s easy to connect on any device, too.
What we didn’t like
Price isn't the best: ExpressVPN’s price is a bit of a downside, though they've recently improved the pricing structure. The best deal is a 24-month commitment for the Basic plan, at $2.79/mo. ExpressVPN also limits the number of devices connected at any time so that you can connect only 10 devices at any given time with the basic plan, and up to 14 with higher plans. However, it does provide a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out to determine if it’s worth the cost.

ExpressVPN test results
We put ExpressVPN through three types of tests: speed tests to measure impact with different servers, Netflix tests to unblock geo-restrictions, and leak tests to determine privacy protection.
ExpressVPN had average impact on our download speeds and successfully unblocked all the Netflix libraries we tested. However, ExpressVPN only partially passed the WebRTC leak test, as the BrowserLeaks site detected that something was off.
| Test type |
|
| Speed | Decreased our download speeds by an average of 30% |
| Netflix | Unblocked Netflix U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia |
| DNS leak | Passed, no DNS leaks |
| WebRTC leak | Partially passed, WebRTC IP didn't match remote IP |
| Kill switch | Passed, no trace of our physical location when switching servers |

ExpressVPN star rating summary
ExpressVPN has a high star rating of 4.8 due to its intuitive dashboard, wide price range that suits multiple budgets, audited no-logs policy, and extensive compatibility.
ExpressVPN received a lower score in the test results category due to its latest speed performance. It also was marked down in the features category because it doesn't offer multi-hop servers.

Honorable mentions
While we highlighted a few of our favorite VPNs, there are a few more solutions that we thought may be a good fit for use in Taiwan:
- CyberGhost: CyberGhost has servers in 100 countries, including Taiwan. With a two-year commitment, you can get CyberGhost for $2.19/mo. After downloading the VPN, you’ll be able to activate the VPN for whichever server you see fit. Depending on which VPN you select, you can also turn on features like the kill switch through the VPN’s settings.
Bottom line: The best VPNs for Taiwan
We recommend NordVPN as the best VPN provider for protecting your internet activity while in Taiwan. It offers plenty of Taiwanese servers, is renowned for its top-notch security protocols, and includes standout features like Threat Protection and Meshnet.
Surfshark allows for unlimited simultaneous connections, so if you’re traveling with family or friends or just want to cover every device in your household, Surfshark may be the right solution for you.

How we test and rate VPNs
We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.
Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.

FAQs
Is a VPN legal in Taiwan?
Yes, VPNs are legal in Taiwan. Freedom House, an organization evaluating internet freedoms in a given country, gave Taiwan a freedom score of 79/100. This means that people using the internet in Taiwan are free to do so and will face limited, if any, censorship.
Which free VPNs can connect to Taiwan?
We didn’t find any free VPNs that connect to a Taiwan server. We’d recommend using a paid VPN if you’re looking to connect to a server in Taiwan. Free VPNs often come with issues like bandwidth limitations, less rigorous security measures, and they may even sell your data.
Will a VPN slow down my internet?
Yes, using a VPN almost always slows down internet speeds. However, reputable providers typically have a negligible slowdown. Based on our testing, we've found that some top providers like NordVPN and ExpressVPN actually improve download speeds, but that's rare.
