A clear photo of your face could give police a starting point for uncovering much of your personal life.

Facial recognition company Clearview AI developed an experimental tool called InquiryIQ that could take information from a face search and automatically continue investigating. Recent reporting states it was designed to open webpages, analyze photographs, and collect personal information connected to a possible match.[1]

The results could include addresses, phone numbers, employers, social media accounts, aliases, arrest records, and possible associates. Clearview calls the resulting network a “Candidate Graph.”

Clearview says law enforcement has never used InquiryIQ or been offered it. The company has no current plans to release the prototype in its present form. Its design still shows how AI could turn facial recognition into a much broader form of surveillance.

How a photo becomes a personal profile

Clearview’s platform lets an investigator upload a photograph and search for matching faces across images collected from the public internet.

The company claims its database contains more than 70 billion images and that more than 2,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide use its facial recognition technology.

Its current system returns possible matches and links for investigators to examine. InquiryIQ could continue the search after an investigator identifies a potential match.

The prototype could browse webpages, perform image searches, and run facial recognition on additional photographs it encountered. Investigators could also enter characteristics such as age, race, gender, hair color, and eye color to guide its research. Clearview’s interface said these details would help the AI make “smarter decisions,” although it did not explain how they would affect the results.

Instead of requiring an investigator to piece together information across separate websites, InquiryIQ could organize it into a single profile within minutes.

A wrong match can spread quickly

InquiryIQ’s interface warned that the demographic, social media, and arrest information it generated “may or may not be accurate.”

An investigator would have to review each result and confirm it had been independently verified. However, the AI would already have chosen which webpages, people, and alleged relationships deserved attention.

A mistaken face match could therefore lead the system toward information belonging to someone else. An unrelated address or criminal record might appear alongside accurate details, making the overall profile look more convincing.

Facial recognition errors have already caused serious harm. The ACLU says at least 14 people are known to have been wrongfully arrested following police reliance on the technology.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has also found that false-positive rates can vary by age, sex, and race. Performance differs between algorithms, of course, but even 'better' systems can incorrectly associate two different people.

Generative AI throws another wrench in the mix because it can produce different answers from the same starting information. That variability could make it difficult to reconstruct why the system pursued a particular lead.

Clearview has considered using photographs to identify people surrounding the original subject for years.

A company patent granted in 2022 describes identifying secondary faces within a photograph and determining possible relationships between the people pictured.

A photo from a wedding, workplace, protest, or family gathering could therefore expose everyone visible in it. Those people might be added to a network of possible associates, even if they were never the target of the original search.

The connection could also be misleading. Appearing beside someone in a photograph does not reveal whether that person is a relative, co-worker, acquaintance, or stranger. An automated graph could give that unexplained connection more significance than it deserves.

How to limit what a face search can find

You cannot control every photograph other people post, but you can reduce the digital footprint that a facial recognition search may connect to you.

  • Make personal social media accounts private and hide old public photo albums.
  • Ask people not to publicly tag you or attach your location to group photos.
  • Search your name, usernames, and profile pictures to see what is publicly visible.
  • Remove your address and phone number from people-search websites when possible.
  • Use different profile pictures across personal, professional, and dating accounts.
  • Learn how data broker removal works if your information appears across multiple databases.
  • Check Clearview’s privacy request page to see whether your state gives you access, deletion, or opt-out rights.

Removing a photograph from its original website may not erase copies that have already been collected. Tightening your privacy settings can still reduce what future searches uncover.

InquiryIQ may never become a commercial product. The surveillance model it demonstrates is already possible: use a face to find a name, then let AI investigate everything connected to it.
