How to hide your eHarmony profile

Whether you’re in the beginning stages of a relationship and not quite ready to completely delete your eHarmony account, or you’re waiting for your subscription to end and want your account hidden, there are three options to hide your profile on eHarmony.

Hiding your profile allows you to choose what other members see about you. You can choose to be invisible or visible to other users. You can even let others know your online status and whether or not you’ve visited their profile.

Hide your profile

To hide your eHarmony profile from other members, log into your eHarmony account:

  1. Click the arrow next to your photos at the top of the screen.
  2. Open the drop-down menu and go to your Data & Settings.
  3. In the Profile Visibility section, move the green slider to make your profile invisible.

You’ll see a banner on your Home Page saying your profile is not visible to other members.

It’s important to note that if you’ve already communicated with members, they will still have access to your profile, but you’ll be invisible to all other members.

Keep profile visits private

You can also change your settings so other members won’t see if you’ve visited their profile. Simply log into your account:

  1. Click the arrow next to your photo.
  2. Open the drop-down menu and click on Data & Settings.
  3. In the Visitors section, move the green slider to make your profile invisible.

When you’ve adjusted these settings, you won’t see which members have viewed your profile, but you also won’t appear on the visitor list of members whose profiles you’ve visited.

Manage your online status

You can also choose to let members know if you’re currently online. To hide your online status, log into your account:

  1. Click on the arrow next to your photo.
  2. Open the drop-down menu and scroll to Data & Settings.
  3. In the Online Right Now section, turn off the green slider.

Hiding your online visibility also limits you from seeing if other members are currently online.

Your personal data and eHarmony

Dating sites are similar to social media sites in that the inherent nature of connecting people requires a certain level of data collection. It’s not surprising that eHarmony collects a vast amount of personal information when you register for an account, including your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, date of birth, dating preferences, etc. In addition, eHarmony has you fill out compatibility quizzes and collects data from them as well.

eHarmony uses third-party advertising agencies and other service providers to curate your ads. The company also allows third parties to collect your data through advertising cookies or pixels placed on the eHarmony website. These cookies allow eHarmony and other advertisers to provide you with interest-based ads catered to you based on your usage behavior. While these third-party advertisers may employ cookies to measure advertising effectiveness, it’s possible for you to opt out of ad targeting. However, their privacy policy also explicitly states that deactivating or erasing cookies may prevent site features from working properly.

In addition to cookies, eHarmony utilizes web beacons, which are small, transparent images used in conjunction with cookies to further personalize the eHarmony experience and track your behavior.

How to protect your data online

For online dating sites to work correctly, a certain amount of user data has to be disclosed — namely, personally identifiable information (PII). PII is just like what it sounds like: personal, sensitive information that opens you up for possible identity theft. But PII is also just part of the online dating game.

PII includes information like your name, address, email address, and place of birth, as well as more private information like your Social Security number, health identification numbers, and more.

Sharing so much information online also presents significant privacy risks — especially if you’re talking to someone you don’t know or haven’t met in person. There’s a balance of getting to know someone without revealing too much information before you can verify someone’s identity.

Scammers capitalize on this balance to access people’s sensitive private information in online dating scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission, romance scams are increasing steadily, and in 2022, over $1.3 billion was lost to online dating or romance scams.[1]

So how can you protect yourself? There are software tools and services that can help, like data removal tools or virtual private networks (VPNs). Data removal services can reduce spam, lessen your chance of identity theft, and clean up your digital footprint, while VPNs mask your IP address and create a protected web experience.

Best data protection services

Even if you don’t use eHarmony or another dating app, you may still want to protect your personal data online. Here are some popular data protection and removal options:

  • Incogni: Incogni, which is owned by Surfshark, scans over 100 websites to find data brokers who are selling your personal info. If Incogni finds any red flags, it works to remove your data by submitting removal requests on your behalf, making the process easy and automatic.

Bottom line

Whether you’re browsing online dating sites, scrolling social media, or using the internet for any other reason, many of us spend hours online each day. With all that browsing, each site can collect information about you: your browsing habits, device information, personally identifying information, account information, and more. In this age, it’s essential to take measures to ensure your data privacy.

To maximize your data privacy, consider using a VPN, securing your device with antivirus software, using strong passwords, and reviewing your settings on any online account to make sure your details are secure. When it’s time to nix your online persona, consider removing your data with a comprehensive service.
