TorGuard’s virtual private network (VPN) is a service that provides a secure internet connection. It's designed to protect your privacy and keep your data safe from malicious actors. TorGuard offers a variety of features, including high-speed servers, a no-logs policy, and dedicated IPs. 

However, TorGuard significantly dropped our speeds with every server we tried. We also found its interface overly complex without much explanation on how to customize its feature. 

This review will cover how TorGuard VPN fared during our speed and Netflix tests, how its price stacks up to other services, and more.

How we test and rate VPNs

We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.

Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.

We last tested TorGuard on December 9, 2024.

Our experience

During our installation, setup, and testing, we found that TorGuard doesn't provide the most intuitive service. 

After logging in to the portal, we couldn't find any clear section where we were meant to download the service. It was only after hitting the support tab from the menu bar that we saw a button for Downloads. From here, we just needed to select our operating systems and download the app.

We were frustrated while testing different server locations. TorGuard doesn't allow you to switch from one server to another, so you'll need to manually disconnect, select a server, and reconnect every time you want a new connection. 

We also found that the settings weren't very user-friendly, as we had trouble finding the kill switches. They were listed on two different tabs, and the text was quite small on these tabs.

We did like that TorGuard includes some features that usually come at an additional cost, like dedicated IP addresses and a router with the highest tier plans. However, it didn't provide the smoothest testing experience, so it could be a hassle for VPN beginners.

Who is TorGuard VPN best for?

  • Recommended for anyone who want a VPN connection for lots of devices without breaking the bank.

TorGuard VPN is an ideal choice for those needing a reliable connection for several family members and devices. It uses secure encryption protocols to protect the confidentiality of all data transfers, keeping them safe and secure from potential attackers. 

The TorGuard Standard plan allows for up to eight devices, the Pro plan allows for up to 12 devices, and the Premium plan allows for up to 30. You'll only have to pay $5.96/mo (billed annually) to cover 30 devices. The TorGuard Premium plan also comes with a free dedicated IP address and a router, which truly provides maxium value.

Just note that TorGuard is based in the U.S., which is part of the Five Eyes alliance. We also couldn't find any third-party audits, so it'd be best to look elsewhere if you're seeking a strong dedication to privacy.

TorGuard VPN has an impressive server count of 3,000+ servers in 50+ countries. This is a large server count, providing you with access to a variety of locations to ensure they can find a server that is fast and secure. 

Additionally, having servers in many countries allows users to bypass censorship and access geo-restricted content. A large server count is important for users needing a secure connection and access to geo-restricted content.

TorGuard VPN has a strict no-logs policy, meaning it does not collect user activity data. When a VPN does not log data, it doesn’t collect information to give law enforcement or government officials, ensuring your online activities remain private.

The location of a VPN’s headquarters is important because it determines whether the VPN is subject to data retention laws. If a VPN is headquartered in a country with strict data retention laws, it is more likely to be forced to turn over subscriber data. 

On the other hand, a VPN headquartered in a country with more relaxed data retention laws will have more privacy protections. Since TorGuard is headquartered in the U.S., it's not subject to the same data retention laws as other countries.

However, the U.S. is part of the Five Eyes alliance, an intelligence-sharing agreement between the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This means that the U.S. can collect and store internet activity from your internet service provider (ISP), third-party surveillance, or activity trackers — something to consider when selecting VPNs headquartered in the U.S.

We'd love to see TorGuard complete a third-party audit of its no-logs policy. This would assure its users that TorGuard's no-logs policy is more than just for show. 

Kill switch

TorGuard VPN’s kill switch features automatically block data from leaving your device if you lose your connection. This ensures that sensitive data will not be exposed if your connection is interrupted (keeping your data private).

It offers two options: a network-level kill switch (called “Network Kill Switch”), which completely shuts off internet access when the VPN connection is lost, and an application-level kill switch (called “App Kill Switch”), which only blocks selected applications. Both are designed to protect your privacy from accidental data leakage and ensure your online activities remain secure.

Dedicated IP address

TorGuard VPN offers a dedicated IP address with its Pro and Premium plans. A dedicated IP address is a unique IP address that isn't shared with any other users. This ensures that you have your own secure and private connection.

Additionally, having a dedicated IP address allows you to access websites and services that require a static IP address. This can be useful for accessing certain banking sites or streaming services that are only available in other countries. Dedicated IPs also allow you to bypass many restrictions imposed by network administrators or ISPs.

Working with TorGuard VPN's dedicated IP address was incredibly useful for us. It allowed us to securely access geo-restricted content, bypass restrictions imposed by network administrators or ISPs, and access websites and services requiring a static IP address. As a result, investing in the Anonymous VPN Pro plan is definitely worth it for its added security and flexibility.

Encryption

TorGuard VPN uses AES-256 encryption, the strongest encryption available. This ensures your data is secure and private, as AES-256 encryption is virtually impossible to break. Additionally, this encryption is used by many of the world's leading security agencies, making it one of the most reliable types of encryption available.

If you need an extra layer of security, TorGuard also offers OpenVPN with AES-256-SHA256 encryption. This is an even stronger type of encryption, providing the highest levels of security and privacy.

DDoS protection

TorGuard VPN also offers protection from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to safeguard your online experience. This protection includes hardware- and software-based firewalls that filter and block malicious traffic from entering your system, detecting and thwarting larger DDoS attacks in real time. That's why DDoS protection is considered an excellent VPN feature.

Online gamers should consider a VPN with DDoS protection because they are often the targets of malicious attacks from other players looking to gain a competitive advantage. DDoS attacks can cause significant lag or even crash a game, ruining the gaming experience. TorGuard uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is a secure and reliable protocol. We ran a series of speed tests to evaluate TorGuard VPN performance and check their servers’ reliability. We also tested their connection security by monitoring their no-logs policy. Testing VPNs is important for determining their speed, reliability, and security, as these are all important factors to consider when choosing the best VPN for your needs.

We conducted the TorGuard VPN speed test to evaluate VPN performance when connecting to different servers worldwide. We conducted our testing on a Lenovo laptop running Windows 11 from a physical location in the U.S.

Our speed test showed nearly a 75% decline in download speeds when connected to a nearby U.S., with some lag while browsing.  With such a steep decline, we didn't expect much better from international servers.

Every other server we tested dropped our download speeds by 82% to 85%. Our latency also increased significantly, which explained why webpages were slow to load. This can also lead to increased buffering while streaming or increased lag while gaming.

Keep in mind that this significant decrease in speeds could be due to the distance of the servers from our location, the processing power of the device used for testing, or ISP throttling, which is known to affect speeds and bandwidth. We were connected to the Spectrum network (notable for throttling) while conducting the test, which could explain the significant discrepancy in download speeds.

Netflix tests

When using TorGuard to watch Netflix, we were easily able to unblock regional libraries with all the servers we tested.

Although there was no lag while streaming, we didn't notice the stream quality was significantly lower than normal. So while TorGuard works with Netflix, it may not provide the best quality stream.

DNS leak test

  • DNS leak test results: TorGuard passed its DNS leak tests.

A Domain Name System (DNS) leak occurs when a user's device accidentally sends DNS requests to a third-party DNS server instead of the VPN's secure DNS server. This exposes users’ browsing data (e.g., visited websites and other online activities) to their ISP. It can even reveal the user's real IP address and location, compromising their privacy and security.

We selected a server in Brazil and navigated to the DNS leak test site. It showed an IP address in Brazil rather than our true location.

WebRTC leak test

Testing a VPN's ability to protect your personal information and remain anonymous is an important step to ensure security and peace of mind. The TorGuard VPN Pro passed the WebRTC leak test with flying colors. 

Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) is a protocol that enables browsers and software applications to communicate directly. If unprotected, it can reveal one's IP address and other private data. TorGuard VPN Pro is reliable in protecting users from any WebRTC leaks, providing the highest level of privacy and anonymity.

After selecting a server in Brazil the test didn't reveal any DNS requests outside the VPN tunnel. This is an important piece of information and proves that TorGuard VPN can provide the highest level of user privacy and anonymity.

Kill switch test

  • Kill switch test results: TorGuard passed its kill switch test.

A kill switch will prevent unencrypted data from traveling over an unsecured connection, keeping you safe from malicious actors. TorGuard has both a network kill switch and an app kill switch. 

We toggled on the network kill switch from the settings. We started the test by connecting to a server in Austria then switching to a server in Belgium. 

IPLeak.net detected several servers, included ones in Austria, Belgium, and the U.S. However, none of these were our real IP address, so we'll consider it a pass.

From the support center, you'll find a contact us section that states, "Need Help? Click the chat bubble if online or email below." However, we didn't spot a chat bubble on any of the TorGuard webpages we visited.

Email

The other way to contact a live human for support is by submitting an email request. We sent an email, but there was no indication of how long it would take to receive a response. Support only mentoned that they would "respond as quickly as possible."

TorGuard’s website also has a detailed knowledge base with video tutorials and step-by-step guides to help with the setup process. The online guides for setting up a VPN are easy to understand and give clear step-by-step instructions.

Finally, TorGuard offers community forums. You can share your experience with other TorGuard users or reach out for help.
