Total Drive is a decent cloud storage service for the money, though it falls short in a couple of key areas. It offers 10 TB of storage at a reasonable price, syncs well, and has apps for all major platforms.
However, we’d love to see better offline support and a more up-to-date web interface. Read on for everything you need to know to decide if Total Drive is right for you.
- Does the basics well

Our experience with Total Drive
Total Drive does the basics of cloud storage fairly well. In our experience, it handled syncing cleanly, and the app was easy to work with. The app has a gallery feature that pulls photos and videos from your uploads and displays them in date order, and it includes photo editing features.
Total Drive uses secure, end-to-end encryption, and the company claims it doesn’t have access to your files. There are apps available for all the major platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. The pricing is reasonable for the amount of storage, whether you opt for the monthly or annual plan.
On the downside, Total Drive’s interface looks a little dated — especially the web app. We also wish that there were a cleaner way to mark files as available offline. On Mac, when you open a file, it's cached for offline access, but there’s no way to choose specific files you always want offline.
Getting started
Getting started with Total Drive is simple enough. Once we purchased our plan, we were given the option to download the app to our computers, along with basic instructions for installing it.
The installation itself is very simple, and the app guided us through choosing the location of our Total Drive folder. We had no issues with the initial setup.
The Mac interface is fine — Total Drive integrates directly with Finder, so we could use the same interface we’re used to for managing files. There’s a menu bar app that lets us view recent activity, force a sync, or manage preferences.
The web app, however, feels a little clunky and dated. It’s nice that it’s available when you might not be able to install software, and it works well enough, but we preferred using the desktop app.
File storage and organization
Adding files to Total Drive is simple — you just drag and drop. This even works on the web interface. On the web, we could also click the Upload button to add new items.
We created folders to organize our files. This can be done both on the desktop and the web interface. We could then drag files into the folder to organize them, and the changes synced between all our devices.
On the web app, Total Drive also offers a gallery feature. This displayed any photos and videos from our folders in a gallery, sorted by date. We could create albums to further organize these, and the albums don’t affect the folder system.
In other words, you can have a photo in your “Wedding Photos” folder and then create an album called “Favorite Pics,” and it’ll be in both places. These albums don’t sync to your computer, though — they exist only in the web interface.
Syncing and sharing files
Syncing on Total Drive was fairly seamless. There was sometimes a slight delay between making a change and having it sync from the cloud to the desktop, but there is a menu-bar button in the app to force a sync, which resolved these issues.
Sharing files is link-based and pretty straightforward. We were given a link to the file and could share it however we liked — for example, via text message, email, or social media. On the desktop, there’s a right-click option called Get link.
On the web, we clicked the share icon and tested by right-clicking and selecting Share. The web app also offers quick options to share the link via email, Facebook, or X. Sharing via link does not require the other person to have a Total account, which is a huge plus. Files and folders shared in this way will be marked with a sharing symbol, and you can easily and instantly mark them private.
You can also set up a Shared Family on Total Drive, which gives you a central place to easily share files with your family. This creates a separate space where anyone in the family can add photos or files.
Total Drive prices and plans
Total Drive offers one plan: 10 TB of storage for $99/yr (or $9.99/mo). The single plan keeps things simple, though a more affordable option for those who don’t need this much storage would be nice.
| Plan | Total Drive Premium |
| Monthly price | $9.99/mo |
| Annual price | $99/yr |
| Free plan | No |

Compared to other cloud storage providers, Total Drive is actually pretty affordable. For example, $99/yr gets you only 2 TB of Google Drive storage, compared to Total’s 10 TB. Total Drive also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on annual subscriptions and a 14-day money-back guarantee on monthly subscriptions.
Total Drive features
Total Drive offers a fairly standard feature set, with solid encryption and file sharing capabilities.
Encryption and file security
Total Drive uses AES-256 encryption. It is end-to-end encrypted, which means Total can’t read or otherwise access your files. You can also set up two-factor authentication on your Total account, but unfortunately, this feature is available only with a Total Password subscription.
Local and cloud storage
Total Drive lets you download files so you can keep local copies. Additionally, files that you open on your device are cached for offline use (indicated by a green checkmark). Unfortunately, there is no way to select specific files to keep offline permanently. This could theoretically cause issues if you frequently need to access your files without an internet connection.
File sharing
Total Drive offers a simple sharing system. When you click Share or Get link, you’ll be given a link to the file that you can send to anyone you want to have access to it. Others do not need to have a Total account. Shared files are marked with a sharing symbol, so you always know which have been shared. Revoking access takes just a single click.
There’s also a handy Family Sharing feature that lets you create a shared space with other Total Drive users in your family. Any files added to this space will be automatically available to all family members.
Secure file deletion
Secure file deletion is a type of deletion that totally purges the file from a cloud storage provider’s servers permanently, so it can’t be recovered. This is a step beyond the normal deletion process. Typically, even if a file is deleted from a “trash” bin, it can still be recovered for at least a limited period.
Unfortunately, Total Drive does not appear to offer this feature. However, since everything is encrypted, even if someone were to recover a file, they should be unable to see its contents.
Total Drive compatibility
Total Drive offers apps for the following platforms:
- Windows
- Mac
- iOS
- Android
In addition to these system-specific apps, Total Drive offers a web portal where you can view, organize, and download your files from any device, even without an app installed.
Total Drive customer support
Unfortunately, Total Drive’s customer support experience is a little frustrating. There are online guides that are easy to find and fairly helpful, but anything beyond that is a chore.
For starters, it’s very difficult to find the contact information. The company’s website does not list the contact page anywhere that we could find, so we had to Google it. When you do, you’ll find a couple of options. One is a phone number that works well. Every time we’ve called, we’ve gotten a prompt answer and a helpful agent.
The other option is a contact page with a list of categories to choose from. You find your problem and click in to get contact info. However, while some do provide options to open a ticket or start a chat, others just present a brief help article with no contact option at all.
Here’s how you can contact Total Drive support if needed:
- Phone: 833-386-3107
- Support ticket/chat: Contact page
The whole runaround makes it feel like Total would rather you just give up and not contact them at all.
Total Drive user reviews
- Apple App Store rating: 4.3
- Google Play Store rating: 3.6
- Trustpilot rating: 4.1
Total Drive has few reviews, but the ratings are mostly positive. However, when you click into actual reviews, many of them warn of spam or difficulty canceling the service. Positive reviews tend to be vague or have a high star rating but negative review text.
We’re not sure what’s going on here, but it's tough to get a clear sense of whether users are actually happy with the product.

Bottom line: Is Total Drive good?
Total Drive isn’t a bad cloud storage service, but it’s not the only option. It offers a lot of storage for the money, and the end-to-end encryption should help keep your files secure.
On the downside, the web interface is a little clunky, you can’t pin specific files for offline use, and customer support is lackluster.
Total Drive could be a good option for those already using other Total products, or who actually need the 10 TB of storage. For most people who have fewer security concerns, we think something like Google Drive would be a better option.
Total Drive FAQs
Is Total Drive part of Apple iCloud?
No, Total Drive is not part of Apple iCloud. It is an entirely separate service from the maker of TotalAV and Total Password.
Why am I being asked to pay for cloud storage?
There are two possible reasons you might be asked to pay for cloud storage. First, you may be approaching the storage limit for your free cloud storage plan. This may trigger emails or notifications suggesting that you upgrade for more storage.
Alternatively, it could be a phishing scam attempting to steal your login info. Before entering any information, it’s a good idea to verify the legitimacy of the message you received. It also doesn’t hurt to learn how to download files safely.
How secure is Total Drive?
Total Drive is fairly secure. It uses AES-256 encryption, which is the industry standard. It is also end-to-end encrypted, which means only you can read your files, and Total Drive can’t see their contents.
How do I get rid of Total Drive?
To get rid of Total Drive, you’ll want to first cancel your subscription. The steps for this vary depending on whether you subscribed through Google Play, the App Store, or Total Drive’s website.
Once canceled, you can uninstall the app using these instructions.
