How we test and rate VPNs

We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.

Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.

Our experience

VyprVPN is consistently one of the easiest VPNs to test, but we had some issues in our most recent testing. As the app was downloading, VyprVPN flashed information about its commitment to privacy, like its no-logs policy and how we're protected against TunnelVision.

VyprVPN pop-up indicated that the user is being protected.

VyprVPN has a clean user interface and handy options. You can select the customize tab to enable the kill switch, swap your protocol, and more. We also appreciated that all servers are listed as green, yellow, or red depending on their congestion level.

The VyprVPN app with a list of all its customizable features.

We did notice that VyprVPN would take 15 to 20 seconds to switch between servers. It's not the end of the world, but we have gotten used to services that can connect to other servers instantaneously.

We were also disappointed when we tried to swap protocols. VyprVPN automatically used the IKEv2 protocol, which worked fine but was leading to some slower than desired speed results.

We tried swapping to WireGuard, which is listed as the fastest available protocol. However, we couldn't connect to any server with WireGuard enabled. We also couldn't connect to any server with OpenVPN, and VyprVPN switched us back to the IKEv2 protocol.

Although we're fans of VyprVPN's interface, its most recent errors may cause frustration for anyone new to VPNs.

Who is VyprVPN best for?

  • Recommended for anyone looking for serious security

VyprVPN is a lockbox. Between its headquarters in Switzerland and its strict, independently audited no-logs policy, VyprVPN is serious about keeping security tight.

It even boasts being the only VPN in the world that owns and operates its own servers and network structure. That means they aren’t relying on another VPN’s network structure for their service.

VyprVPN prices and subscriptions

VyprVPN can cost you anywhere from $3.00/mo to $5.00/mo. For all the features, servers, and speed, VyprVPN is one of the lower-priced VPN services.

See how VyprVPN's starting price compares to some of the top VPNs available:

  • One-year ExpressVPN subscription for $4.99/mo
  • Two-year NordVPN subscription for $2.99/mo
  • Two-year VyprVPN subscription for $3.00/mo
  • Two-year Surfshark subscription for $1.99/mo

If you don’t feel like plunking down the money for two years, you can pay for an annual plan or month-to-month. Even though its $3.00/mo price for a two-year plan is lower than many of the competitors, you'll end up paying nearly three times more per month if you go this route.

VyprVPN features

VyprVPN has a decent server network, privacy-focused headquarters, and standard VPN features like a kill switch and split tunneling. We'll detail VyprVPN's features below.

    Server count and countries

    • 700+ servers in 63 countries

VyprVPN offers 700+ servers in 63 countries. These are proprietary physical servers that they maintain. While this server count is on the lower side of normal, they offer over 300,000 different IP addresses. There’s plenty of ability to cycle through IP addresses, even with fewer server locations.

The fact that VyprVPN owns and operates its own servers is worth noting. Physical servers in physical locations are better for VPNs because they allow you to browse with more speed. A virtual server is still good for VPN usage but may cause a slower connection.

    No-logs policy and headquarters

    • VyprVPN logs policy: No logs
    • VyprVPN headquarters: Switzerland

VyprVPN is privacy-focused. Not only are they incorporated in Switzerland outside of the 14 Eyes Alliance, but they also adhere to a no-logs policy that they have independently audited.

By adopting a no-logs policy, VyprVPN is protecting your data at the most basic level. But VyprVPN hasn't been audited for several years now, so we'd feel more reassured in this no-logs policy if there was more recent auditing.

The Swiss government does monitor non-Swiss citizens. Because of the no-logs policy adopted by VyprVPN, you won’t need to worry about government demands to hand over your data as there is none to hand over. When looking for a VPN, logging and headquarters are two of the most important factors.

    Kill switch

A kill switch is a must-have in a VPN. It ensures that if your connection to the VPN drops for any reason, VyprVPN will disconnect you from the internet to protect your IP address.

A bonus for VyprVPN is its easily customizable kill switch. It allows you to choose how much control the kill switch has as well as how much traffic you want to be routed while it’s active.

The VyprVPN app open on the Configure Kill Switch screen.

    Split tunneling

The split tunneling feature is useful if you’re interested in routing internet traffic through simultaneous connections. This can be useful if your VPN connection doesn’t allow you to log in to your bank, but you still want the rest of your traffic covered. It’s also valuable if you’re looking to access content in multiple regions.

VyprVPN makes split tunneling simple to use, even if you aren’t familiar with the feature. It also has smart features that allow you to choose the way you want to route traffic.

Unfortunately, split tunneling is only available for macOS and Android.

The VyprVPN app open on the Connection Per App screen.

    Encryption

It’s no surprise that VyprVPN uses a default WireGuard protocol with AES 256-bit encryption. This is strong, military-grade encryption. With a quantum computer, it would take billions of years to crack AES 256-bit encryption using brute force.

What this all boils down to is knowing that your data is safe.

    VPN protocol

VyprVPN supports the following VPN protocols:

    • WireGuard
    • OpenVPN
    • Chameleon
    • IKEv2

This allows you to select your preferred protocol. If you aren’t sure what protocol to choose, the user-friendly dashboard gives you a brief overview of each of them and what they’re used for with a VPN.

Its Chameleon protocol is especially impressive as it promises to help with censorship. This gives you ultimate control over your experience.

The VyprVPN app open on the page with all of its available VPN protocols.

    VyprVPN test results

We have several different tests we perform to make sure you’re getting the most information possible when shopping for VPNs.

    Speed tests

    • Speed test results: VyprVPN decreased our download speeds by an average of 47%.

First, we calculated how much VyprVPN impacted our download speeds, upload speeds, and latency. We tested VyprVPN on a MacBook running macOS Tahoe from Austin, Texas.

We began testing by recording our baseline speed before connecting to VyprVPN.

We mentioned our specific location because VyprVPN recommended a server in Austin, Texas as our fastest location. So we were surprised that this server decreased our speeds by over 60%, and it wasn't the fastest server we tested either.

Surprisingly, the Australia server had almost no impact on our download speeds. We were browsing and saving our data without realizing we were using a server from halfway across the world. The only indicator was when a website would show us different prices due to the region.

    Netflix tests

    • Netflix test results: VyprVPN unblocked all the Netflix libraries we tested.

Whether you’re traveling overseas and want to watch your favorite Netflix shows, or you’re snuggled in at home wanting to catch the latest regional content, a VPN is your best bet for accessing these shows.

Netflix knows this is a reason many people use VPNs, and it’s constantly trying to block that ability. That's why we test every VPN we review with Netflix.

Previously, we had trouble unblocking Netflix Canada but were able to access all the other libraries without issues. This time, we were able to access all the libraries we tested with minimal issues and watch high quality streams, too.

    DNS leak test

    • DNS leak test results: VyprVPN passed its DNS leak tests.

Domain Name System (DNS) is the internet’s address book. When you’re using the internet, there will be constant DNS requests between your computer and the sites and apps you’re trying to access. A good VPN will make sure your IP address stays hidden, even as you share loads of information in the form of web surfing.

Our tests confirmed that VyprVPN doesn’t leak DNS data.

VyprVPN's DNS leak test results (passed).

    WebRTC leak test

    • WebRTC leak test results: VyprVPN passed its WebRTC leak tests.

WebRTC is a function used by messaging and communication apps. It allows those apps to communicate with each other and, therefore, allows you to communicate with your intended recipient. With this essential process, you can use your internet-connected device like a phone or even video chat.

If your VPN experiences a WebRTC leak, it means your real IP address shows up when using these applications. Luckily, our testing showed no WebRTC leaks with VyprVPN.

VyprVPN's WebRTC leak test results (passed).

    Kill switch test

    • Kill switch test results: VyprVPN passed its kill switch test.

Beyond the DNS and WebRTC leak tests, we also test that a VPN's kill switch can prevent data leaks. A kill switch should block your internet if your VPN connection drops. This will protect your online activities from prying eyes and hackers.

We started by connecting to a server in Egypt, then opened ipleak.net. After toggling the kill switch on, we swapped to a server in Germany to see if the IP address of our internet service provider (ISP) would be exposed when VyprVPN switched servers.

This time, our ISP and personal location remained private, so the kill switch worked.

    VyprVPN compatibility

VyprVPN works with many devices and browsers. While installing a VPN on your computer and phone is what most people think of, you can also install VyprVPN on certain routers as well.

    FAQs

    Is VyprVPN free?

No, VyprVPN isn't free, but it does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

    Does VyprVPN work with Netflix?

Yes, but during our testing it only unblocked Netflix U.S., U.K., and Australia. If you're having trouble accessing Netflix content, reach out to the VyprVPN 24/7 live support team via chat on the VyprVPN website.

What are the benefits of VyprVPN?

VyprVPN has a lot of benefits including auto-connect on public Wi-Fi, a strict no-logs policy, fast VPN service, split tunneling, torrenting support, multiple compatible devices and browsers, a clean user interface, and 24/7 live support, to name a few.

How does VyprVPN compare to ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN has larger server country count across 105 countries, while VyprVPN has 63 countries. However, VyprVPN is faster and less expensive while also providing the same great product features.

ExpressVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands and owned by a company in Hong Kong, so there are some concerns regarding privacy in China. VyprVPN is headquartered in Switzerland by a Swiss company that owns and operates proprietary servers.

Here's a comparison of ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN with more details.

    Bottom line: Is VyprVPN good?

There's a lot to love about VyprVPN, but it falls short compared to many of the best VPNs. It has continuously failed our kill switch test and its no-logs policy hasn't been audited since 2018.

But VyprVPN has a simple interface with all the main features being just a click away. If you’re a person looking for solid security and good user experience, VyprVPN may be the product for you. You can also see how VyprVPN stacks up to several top competitors:
