Most VPN providers rent server space from third-party hosting companies. VyprVPN buys and runs its own hardware instead. That matters for privacy, because no outside company has physical access to the machines your traffic passes through. VyprVPN says it's the only provider in the world that owns its entire network.
Its servers are also physical rather than virtual. A virtual server can be configured to appear in one country while the hardware sits somewhere else, so with VyprVPN, a server labeled Japan is a machine in Japan.

Surprisingly, the Australia server had almost no impact on our download speeds. We were browsing and saving our data without realizing we were using a server from halfway across the world. The only indicator was when a website would show us different prices due to the region.

VyprVPN's parent company, Certida LLC, is headquartered in Texas. That puts VyprVPN under U.S. jurisdiction, and the U.S. is a founding member of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. VyprVPN maintains datacenters in 63 countries, including Switzerland, but its own support documentation names Texas as its operating jurisdiction.
That's worth knowing because VyprVPN was originally founded in response to U.S. government surveillance. Its commitment page describes the company being built after its founders discovered the NSA monitoring AT&T's networks in San Francisco.
VyprVPN's argument is that jurisdiction doesn't matter if there's no data to hand over. That rests entirely on the no-logs policy, and the audit backing it up is the weak point. Leviathan Security Group verified the policy in 2018. We couldn't find a more recent audit, and VyprVPN's site still advertises the assessment without listing a date. Eight years is a long gap for a service that markets itself on privacy, especially through a change in ownership.
VyprVPN's security features held up better than its speeds. Here's what we found testing the kill switch, split tunneling, encryption, and leak protection.
A kill switch is a must-have in a VPN. It ensures that if your connection to the VPN drops for any reason, VyprVPN will disconnect you from the internet to protect your IP address.
A bonus for VyprVPN is its easily customizable kill switch. It allows you to choose how much control the kill switch has as well as how much traffic you want to be routed while it’s active.

We tested the kill switch by connecting to a server in Egypt, then opening ipleak.net. After toggling the kill switch on, we swapped to a server in Germany to see if the IP address of our internet service provider (ISP) would be exposed when VyprVPN switched servers.
Our ISP and personal location remained private, so the kill switch worked.

The split tunneling feature is useful if you’re interested in routing internet traffic through simultaneous connections. This can be useful if your VPN connection doesn’t allow you to log in to your bank, but you still want the rest of your traffic covered. It’s also valuable if you’re looking to access content in multiple regions.
VyprVPN makes split tunneling simple to use, even if you aren’t familiar with the feature. It also has smart features that allow you to choose the way you want to route traffic.
Unfortunately, split tunneling is only available for macOS and Android.

Domain Name System (DNS) is the internet’s address book. When you’re using the internet, there will be constant DNS requests between your computer and the sites and apps you’re trying to access. We did notice that VyprVPN would take 15 to 20 seconds to switch between servers. It's not the end of the world, but we have gotten used to services that can connect to other servers instantaneously.
We were also disappointed when we tried to swap protocols. VyprVPN connected over IKEv2 by default, which worked but was slower than we wanted. We tried WireGuard, which VyprVPN lists as its fastest protocol, and couldn't connect to any server. OpenVPN failed the same way, and the app reverted us to IKEv2 both times.
Although we're fans of VyprVPN's interface, its most recent errors may cause frustration for anyone new to VPNs.
