How we test and rate VPNs

We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.

Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.

NordVPN’s pricing ranges from $2.99–$17.99/mo depending on the length of your subscription and the tier you select. The NordVPN Standard plan is the best option if all you need is the VPN. But there are also the NordVPN Plus and Ultimate plans if you want additional features under one subscription like a password manager, data breach scanner, cloud storage, and more.

The best value plan is NordVPN Standard for two years, which costs $5.49/mo (billed every two years) so long as you’re willing to commit to a long-term subscription.

On the other hand, VyprVPN’s pricing ranges from $3.00-$10.00/mo. All of its plans offer the same features, you'll just need to select a one month, one year, or two year term length.

VyprVPN's best value plan is $3.00/mo (billed every two years) for two years. It's about the same price that Nord offers for an annual subscription, but Nord has more flexibility in its pricing tiers.

Both VPNs provide a 30-day money-back guarantee, so there's no harm in taking them for a test spin. Both VPNs also allow for 10 simultaneous connections, so you can cover multiple devices in your home with one subscription.

NordVPN vs. VyprVPN: payment options

NordVPN and VyprVPN both offer a range of payment options, allowing flexibility for users. NordVPN stretches its arm a bit wider, accepting everything from credit and debit cards to Amazon Pay and Google Pay. Fancy some privacy? Nord’s got cryptocurrencies in the mix too.

On the other hand, VyprVPN sticks to the classics: PayPal, credit cards, and the added bonus of UnionPay.

NordVPN payment options

  • Credit or debit card
  • PayPal
  • Google Pay
  • Cryptocurrencies via CoinGate

VyprVPN payment options

  • Credit cards
  • PayPal

Winner: VyprVPN wins, offering lower pricing with the same amount of simultaneous connections as NordVPN.

Which VPN is faster?

NordVPN increased our speeds with every server location, while VyprVPN slowed our speeds with every server location.

We went on a speed-testing spree with both VPNs. Why? Speed defines the experience. You wouldn't want your Netflix binge or work session to be a buffer fest, right?

We start by recording our baseline speed, which is our speed without a VPN connected. Then, we establish server connections worldwide and calculate how much our baseline speed was impacted by the VPN.

Our Pick
US 45% faster 28% slower
CA 41% faster 10% slower
UK 31% faster 48% slower
AU 12% faster 23% slower

NordVPN had standout results, increasing our internet speeds with every server location we tested. Even servers that were further away in the U.K. and Australia were still providing faster speeds than our baseline. It's worth noting that longer distances to servers can play spoilsport, slowing down your connection and ramping up latency.

On the flip side, VyprVPN slowed down our speeds across the board, but that's typical with VPNs. Your data travels through an encrypted tunnel, so it's no longer taking the fastest route to its destination, so slow downs are to be expected. VyprVPN decreased our speeds by an average of 24%, which wasn't noticeable while browsing.

Winner: VyprVPN snatches the crown in the speed department. While both have their strengths, VyprVPN's consistent performance, especially in the U.S. and Canada, makes it a front-runner for those seeking ultra-fast connections.

Which VPN is more secure?

NordVPN takes the win with its sprawling server network and Threat Protection feature to block ads, trackers, and malicious sites.

NordVPN's 6,800+ servers across 111 countries seems massive compared to VyprVPN's 700+ servers in 64 countries.

Nord also prides itself on specialty servers for a variety of purposes. There's double VPN servers to send your traffic through two servers for enhanced security, obfuscated servers to bypass firewalls, P2P servers for torrenting and more.

NordVPN's list of specialty server options.

Both tout a no-logs policy. NordVPN even had Deloitte peek under their hood, while VyprVPN let Leviathan Security do the auditing. It's not just about hiding your IP address; it's about trust.

One notable difference is that NordVPN’s most recent audit was completed in December 2022, while VyprVPN’s most recent audit was completed in November 2018. We’d love to see VyprVPN complete another audit so we can ensure its commitment the way Nord has.

In the encryption showdown, both VPN providers are on equal footing. AES-256? Check. NordVPN specifically uses AES-256-GCM, which is faster than your standard AES-256.

As far as protocol, VyprVPN flashes Chameleon, its proprietary protocol that;s ideal for bypassing censorship from governments, corporations, and internet service providers (ISPs). Nord also offers its own unique protocol, known as NordLynx. The NordLynx protocol was built around the WireGuard protocol for faster speeds.

The VyprVPN app open on the page with all of its available VPN protocols.

As far as headquarters, NordVPN and VyprVPN are both outside of the Eyes alliances, ensuring your encrypted data remains private. NordVPN is based in Panama, while VyprVPN is based in Switzerland.

And if you’re looking for a VPN that can also dodge malware, ads, and trackers, NordVPN comes through with Threat Protection. Unfortunately, VyprVPN doesn't have any tools for blocking ads.

Winner: NordVPN takes the cake with its massive server count, bonus features, and effortless unblocking capabilities for major streaming services.

When it comes to interface, we found both NordVPN and VyprVPN’s apps to be clean and easy to use during our testing.

The VyprVPN app with a list of all its customizable features.

They both offer extensive compatibility with the most common operating systems, routers, and even smart devices like smart TVs. However, NordVPN edges ahead with extensive browser compatibility as well.

If you’re looking for round-the-clock customer support, both NordVPN and VyprVPN have your back. In addition to 24/7 live chat support, they also provide email support and knowledge bases if you prefer to troubleshoot on your own.

Winner: While NordVPN and VyprVPN both offer user-friendly interfaces and top-notch support, NordVPN inches ahead with more diverse compatibility.
