Windows Will Block 18+ Apps Until You Verify Your Age. What Verification Actually Requires

Microsoft is preparing to let Windows apps ask a surprisingly personal question without actually learning your birthday: Are you a child, teenager, or adult?

New Windows age-awareness tools will allow supported apps to receive an age range and learn whether that age has been verified.[1]

Adults who remain unverified may be blocked from viewing, purchasing, or downloading new games and apps rated 18+, although Microsoft says mature content you already own will remain accessible.

The company calls this a privacy-conscious alternative to making every app collect its own proof of age, stating, “Apps receive only the age-related signal needed for the experience and not sensitive personal data such as full date of birth.”

Still, confirming that you are an adult may require a selfie, an identity document, or access to a government login system.

Windows is learning your age bracket

Microsoft is introducing a set of Windows Age APIs that developers can use to tailor apps and services according to a user’s age.

The information comes from the Microsoft account signed in to Windows. Apps may be able to see one of five age ranges:

  • Under 10
  • 10 to 12
  • 13 to 15
  • 16 to 17
  • 18 or older

Apps will not receive the user’s exact birthday. Microsoft says they receive only the age-related signal needed to provide an age-appropriate experience.

A second signal can tell the app whether the age was formally verified or merely entered by the account holder. That distinction matters when an app contains adult material or operates somewhere that requires stronger proof than clicking a box that says, “Yes, I’m 18.”

Windows can also classify users as a child, minor, or adult based on local laws. That could allow the same app to impose different restrictions depending on where the user lives.

Microsoft says the technology can support apps, games, services, and AI-powered experiences. A developer could use it to hide mature content, disable certain communications, restrict purchases, or introduce additional safeguards for younger users.

What happens if you refuse to verify your age?

According to the company’s age-assurance FAQ, adults who decline verification may be unable to view, purchase, or download games and apps rated 18+. Existing mature-rated content tied to the account should remain accessible and playable.

Other parts of Windows are not currently scheduled to disappear behind an ID check. Microsoft says users may be prompted when they attempt to access age-restricted content or features, rather than requiring every Windows user to verify immediately.

However, individual apps may use the Windows signals to restrict their own features. Microsoft is giving developers the ability to check both your age bracket and whether it has been verified, so the practical effect will depend partly on which apps adopt the tools.

The new APIs are broadly available to Windows Insiders and are expected to reach other Windows users soon. One of the classification tools, CheckAgeStatusAsync, is planned for a future update.

How Microsoft’s age verification works

Microsoft Age Verification, or MAV, is designed around a “verify once, use everywhere” system.

After you complete the check, Microsoft stores your verification status with your account. Windows and participating apps can then confirm that you are a verified adult without each service demanding another selfie or copy of your identification.

The specific options vary by country, but Microsoft lists three possible ways to verify:

Microsoft says its verification partners, Yoti and Verifymy, process the information and delete it after verification. Most checks reportedly finish within seconds, although some can take several minutes.

The company also says users are generally required to verify only once. You could be asked to repeat the process if you change personal account information or move to another country or region.

Completing verification on a Microsoft account also applies the result to the associated Xbox account.

Where are the checks active?

Microsoft currently offers account age verification in Australia, Brazil, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. It plans to expand into additional regions as governments introduce or enforce age-assurance requirements.

That regional rollout helps explain why Microsoft needs more than a basic birthday field. Regulators increasingly expect platforms to distinguish reliably between adults and children, particularly when services include pornography, mature games, private messaging, or other potentially sensitive features.

The Windows API gives Microsoft a centralized way to satisfy those rules. It also saves developers from constructing separate verification systems for every app.

That convenience comes with a tradeoff: Your age status becomes another piece of account-level information managed by the company behind your operating system.

Is this safer than verifying separately in every app?

Maybe.

Sending a government ID or facial image to numerous websites creates more opportunities for that data to be retained, mishandled, or exposed in a breach. A centralized system can reduce how many companies touch the original verification material.

Apps receiving an age bracket instead of a birthday is also a form of data minimization. A game that only needs to know whether you are over 18 does not need your full date of birth.

However, “less data” does not mean “no privacy risk.”

An age bracket can still reveal personal information, particularly when combined with an account, device identifiers, location, app activity, or other data. The system also depends on Microsoft and its verification partners implementing their promised limits correctly.

Also, centralization creates its own concentration of trust. One verified status may save you time, but it also gives Microsoft gatekeeping power for what you can access.

What should you do if Windows asks you to verify?

First, confirm that the prompt is legitimate. Don't upload an ID or selfie through a link sent by an unexpected email, text message, pop-up, or direct message.

Instead, sign in directly at account.microsoft.com and open Your info. Under Profile info, look for the Age verification section. Microsoft says this page displays your current verification status.

Before choosing a method, check what information the verification partner requests and read its privacy notice. If several methods are offered, choose the one that requires the least sensitive information you are comfortable providing.

You can also decline verification, but doing so may leave your account marked as unverified and block access to new 18+ apps, games, or features.
