Looking for a new job used to mean submitting your résumé, polishing your LinkedIn profile, and waiting for recruiters to reach out.

Now, AI recruiting platforms are flipping that model on its head.

Instead of waiting for candidates to apply, companies are increasingly using artificial intelligence to search massive databases of professional profiles compiled from public sources.

One of the biggest players, SeekOut, says recruiters can search more than 1 billion candidate profiles, including information from LinkedIn, GitHub, academic publications, patents, and professional databases.[1]

The platform also says it can search more than 97 million subject matter experts, 40 million GitHub technical profiles, and 3.7 million security-cleared candidates.

That means you may already exist inside one of these databases without ever creating an account or submitting a résumé.

This can understandably expand the hiring pool. From a privacy perspective, however, it also raises an uncomfortable question: How did my information end up there in the first place?

According to SeekOut's FAQ, its candidate database includes information from public sources such as:

  • Professional databases

None of these sources are necessarily secret. However, aggregating information from dozens of places creates a much more revealing profile than any single website does on its own. One you may not have consented to in the first place.

An AI platform that combines your LinkedIn profile, GitHub contributions, published research, patents, and other professional records into one searchable profile can paint a far more comprehensive picture.

That sort of detailed overview of you is something you might not expect when you publish information online, especially where it might come up during or before the interview process. There's a reason people build and tailor résumés to jobs to begin with, and this type of database strips jobseekers of the power to present themselves in the way they wish.

The answer depends largely on where you live and how the information is collected and processed.

In the United States, companies can often collect and process publicly available information, although privacy laws vary by state and sector.

In the European Union, the rules are generally stricter.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), organizations that process personal data generally need a lawful basis and must provide individuals with certain rights, including the ability to request access to their personal data and, in many cases, ask for it to be corrected or erased. Cross-border transfers of personal data can also trigger additional legal obligations.

That doesn't automatically mean every AI recruiting platform violates privacy law, but it does mean companies operating internationally must navigate a far more complex regulatory landscape than simply collecting public information.
