We found the Surfshark Fire TV app to be one of the best for user-friendliness and streaming support. It was easy for us to watch Netflix with Surfshark and unblock other popular streaming platforms, including Disney+.

We thought it was especially helpful that you can log in to the Surfshark Fire TV app without the slog of manually entering your username and password on the Fire TV Stick remote. Instead, get a code from the Surfshark app on another device (we used the iOS app on an iPhone) and log in in just a few seconds.

The server selection screen was also more intuitive than many other VPN apps we tested. We had no issues setting up favorite servers for quick access, navigating the server list, or searching for specific servers.

What we didn’t like

Surfshark and NordVPN aren’t independent competitors. Nord Security finalized a merger with Surfshark in February 2022, which means our top two picks on this list share a parent company.

What we liked

Like Surfshark, Nord makes it easy to log in to its app on a Fire TV Stick. This includes using a QR code or PC/mobile verification. We used mobile verification on our phone, and it was a piece of cake.

Once we were in, we had no issues testing different streaming apps. Everything was fast and smooth, with no errors or slowdowns. In fact, in our latest round of testing, NordVPN topped the charts and actually increased our download speeds while we connected to servers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

Granted, we expect at least a slight slowdown in internet speeds when connecting to a VPN. This is because your internet connection has to go through an additional server — which may be located across the world — to encrypt your data. Even so, we were impressed by NordVPN's speed test results.

What we didn’t like

The NordVPN Fire TV app wasn’t as streamlined as the Surfshark or ExpressVPN apps. We found the layout much less inviting, especially since the home screen consists of a series of large blocks representing the various servers you can connect to.

This interface wasn’t as useful as Surfshark, with its easily scrollable server list, or as aesthetically pleasing as ExpressVPN, with its minimalist style.

We think paying a premium for this VPN makes sense if you don’t want to deal with clunky interfaces and want a simple solution for streaming from your Fire TV Stick. Overall, we had no issues using ExpressVPN to unblock regional content from Disney+ and Netflix.

What we didn’t like

This is more of a minor inconvenience, but you have to manually type your username and password to log in. It honestly doesn’t take more than a minute if you’re quick with your Fire TV Stick remote and don’t have the most complicated password ever, but it’s still annoying.

Other than that, we found the ExpressVPN Fire TV app was very easy to install and use, and we had no speed or buffering issues while streaming.

We tested many different VPNs for this list, and some didn’t quite hit the mark to be considered part of our top recommended VPNs for Fire TV Sticks. In particular, CyberGhost and IPVanish didn’t reach the same levels as Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN.

CyberGhost

We like that CyberGhost starts at $2.19/mo, making it super affordable. We’ve also had good results when testing its speed, privacy, and security. But our experience using it with the Fire TV Stick fell a bit short. We typically want to use VPNs to stream content on Fire TV devices, but we ran into multiple issues trying to use CyberGhost with Netflix and Disney+.

This included being unable to load Disney+ because of an error message, even though we were connected to a CyberGhost U.K. server.

Keep in mind that CyberGhost has streaming-optimized servers, which means you’re supposed to pick a specific server depending on which streaming service you want to use and the regional library you want to access.

For example, you can choose a U.K. server that’s optimized for using Netflix with Fire TV Sticks. That’s what we chose, and it didn’t work with Disney+, which is something we wanted to test. But it also didn’t work very well with Netflix: We had issues loading the Netflix menus, and it didn’t appear to load U.K.-specific content.

You don’t really have these streaming issues with our top VPN choices, and you don’t have to worry about choosing a specific server for each streaming service you use. Any server will do with Surfshark, NordVPN, or ExpressVPN, making the streaming experience much easier than with CyberGhost.

IPVanish

We generally don’t view IPVanish as the most trustworthy VPN around because of an incident in its company history when it was formerly known as Highwinds Network Group. It had advertised a strict no-logs policy, but the company released private user information to the U.S. government in 2016.

Why did it have this information if it supposedly had a no-logs policy? We’re not sure, but it’s a red flag. And that doesn’t mean things haven’t changed over the years, but it’s not a good look.

We were also unimpressed with the IPVanish Fire TV app. We had to manually enter our login information, which is a hassle on the Fire TV Stick.

We also immediately had issues loading Disney+ while connected to a U.K. server. This was the same error we had with CyberGhost.

We also experienced long loading times when attempting to use Netflix while connected to a U.K. server, which negatively impacted our overall experience with IPVanish.

Do you need a VPN for a Fire TV Stick?

Not everyone does. A VPN encrypts the traffic leaving your Fire TV Stick and hides your IP address, which changes what your internet provider can see and what streaming apps think your location is. Whether that’s worth paying for depends on how you watch.

A VPN is worth it if you:

And the introductory rate isn’t usually the renewal rate, so check what the plan costs in year two before you buy.

Also worth factoring in: Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription can cover your Fire TV Stick plus every other device in the house. If you’re protecting several devices, a slightly higher monthly price spread across more devices can work out cheaper per device.
