C.AI started age verification when it removed open-ended chat for minors, effective November 25, 2025. The company acted amid mounting scrutiny and a wave of teen-safety lawsuits — including one brought by the mother of a teenager who died by suicide, which Character.AI and Google settled in January 2026.

What Character.AI age verification actually collects

Character.AI itself doesn't process additional age verification. It uses Persona, which handles your biometric photo and ID data.

Persona starts by asking for a facial selfie to perform an age estimation. If the results are inconclusive, Persona will ask for a government-issued ID to verify your birth date.

Character.AI says it uses verification information to confirm a user's age and prevent fraud, but also for "quality assurance." That's a broad term that may involve testing, monitoring, and improving its systems. Your data isn't only used to determine your age.

Is it safe to send your ID to Character.AI's verification vendor?

Persona is one of the largest identity verification companies in the U.S., and it handles age checks for LinkedIn, OpenAI, Reddit, and Roblox. It doesn't share your ID or selfie with Character.AI. But its size is also why a security disclosure earlier this year got so much attention.

In February 2026, it was discovered that Persona had exposed thousands of files online. Roughly 53MB of its front-end source code was publicly accessible through a misconfigured build path, exposing code rather than user IDs or biometric data. But an analysis showed that Persona did more than just age verification. It also had running watchlist matches, terrorism and espionage screenings, and background checks.

Users saw this as an overreach because they believed their data was used only to confirm their age. Persona received criticism for the lack of transparency. The incident led Discord to cut ties with Persona, and the social platform now uses k-ID for age verification.

Persona disputed the surveillance framing. CEO Rick Song said the company does not work with any federal agency today, and Persona stated:

• Not all users go through every check.
• It only processes data – customers control the data handling and deletion.

What parents can do instead

An age-verification prompt may seem like good news for parents. It can make it more difficult for teens to bypass age verification on Character.AI. While age verification can limit what a teen can do on a platform, it's not a substitute for supervision, privacy awareness, or rules around using AI chatbots.
