What is your location based on in Bumble?

Bumble, like other online dating websites and mobile apps, requires your device's location to use its platform. When you create a profile on the app, it will automatically detect your current location and set it as your default location.

Bumble does use GPS location data from your device to show you potential matches in your area. This is also done to verify that you are indeed located where you say you are and not attempting to spoof locations for many reasons.

Can you hide or alter your location for privacy and safety?

According to the Bumble user terms and conditions section, app users have to allow Bumble to access their device location so that they can match with other Bumble users in their area.[1] Additionally, its user guide advises that there is no option to hide your physical location and still successfully match with others on the app.

Bumble recognizes the need for privacy and safety for app users. It lists the terms and conditions of usage of its app or website and user guidelines on its website. However, it advises against using the app if you are unwilling to share location privileges. Bumble recommends users opt for options such as Snooze Mode or Incognito Mode for Bumble Premium members needing to hide or alter their location settings.

Dating app users wanting to avoid dating scams or protect their overall privacy may still want to use a virtual private network. VPNs encrypt your internet activities and mask your real IP address, protecting you from hackers and other bad actors who may want to know your exact physical location.

How to change location in Bumble

In the world of online dating apps, location sharing within the app is often necessary to be an active user of the platform. Although that may be challenging for those who want to protect their online dating privacy, you can still take several measures to share your location privileges while protecting your privacy. The following are a few ways to change your location with Bumble successfully.

Request a location change

Bumble’s algorithm is designed to update based on your device's GPS location. However, if your location does not automatically update within the app or the desktop website, you can still take measures to update it. Below is the method for updating your address across most devices, including iOS, Android, and desktops.

  1. To access Bumble’s settings, click the gray gear symbol in the app's upper left corner.
  2. Scroll down to the section that says Location.
  3. Below is a prefilled location based on the GPS location shared on your device.
  4. Next to the prefilled location box, click the circular arrow to the right of the box. This will update your location based on your device's GPS location ping.

However, if your location does not update automatically, you can contact Bumble support to change it manually. It also recommends taking steps to manually change your location if the app does not update automatically.

You can also change your location within the settings on your iOS device. Here's how to change your location on your iPhone.

Set Travel Mode

If you are traveling to a new destination, whether domestically or internationally, you can still use Bumble. As long as you have a Bumble Premium subscription, you have the option to change your profile to Travel Mode. You can select a new city (but not an exact location), and other users will be able to see that you're using Travel Mode.

To activate the Travel Mode setting on your iPhone or Android device, complete the following steps in the Bumble app:

  1. Open Bumble and navigate to the Settings tab in your app or on the website. When you open the desktop site, this is on the left side of your browser window. For in-app access, open the settings by tapping on the gray gear symbol in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Scroll to the Location section at the bottom and tap “Travel to….” A small pop-up will ask you to confirm that you want to use Travel Mode.
  3. Search for the city you’d like to appear in and select it as your location option within this mode.

Bumble's Travel Mode requires a Premium subscription and allows you to set your location to a different city or country.

How much does Bumble Premium cost?

While Bumble is free on the App Store or Google Play Store, you'll need to pay for a weekly or monthly Premium or Premium+ subscription to access Travel Mode. Bumble Boost costs less but doesn't get you Travel Mode. For a full list of features, we recommend checking your Bumble app or the website for more information.

Activate Snooze Mode

Singles looking to take a break or stop receiving matches from their current location can turn on Snooze Mode. Snoozing allows you to hide your profile from other singles in your area. Here's how to activate Snooze Mode in your Bumble account settings:

  1. Open the app or the website.
  2. Click on the gray silhouette in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Locate the Settings button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and tap Snooze.
  4. Then, you can choose whether to hide your profile from being visible for 24 hours, 72 hours, a week, or indefinitely.

To turn on Snooze, Travel Mode, or Incognito Mode, you'll need to open your Bumble app settings.

Try a VPN service

We generally recommend virtual private networks for anyone looking to protect their data online, but this option may not work with Bumble. You can use a VPN, such as NordVPN or Surfshark, to hide your location; however, you won't receive matches in the app.

Several users of the dating app have stated that Bumble has figured out how to block fake virtual locations, and you might not have much success with this method. Additionally, Bumble advises that it’s against its terms of usage to spoof or alter your location while using the platform.

If you want to see firsthand if your VPN will work with Bumble, simply download your preferred VPN app, choose what server location you want to connect to, and turn on the VPN. The VPN will now change your device’s location, but Bumble may detect the GPS discrepancy and temporarily disable matchmaking features.

We recommend NordVPN or Surfshark because both premium VPNs include ad blockers for advanced online protection. NordVPN Threat Protection and Surfshark CleanWeb can block annoying Bumble ads as well as trackers, cookies, and malicious files.

Reasons for changing your Bumble location

Although the terms of use for Bumble require users to share their location on their devices to use it, people can still take measures to protect their privacy and safety as they connect and date on the app. Below are a few reasons why users may need to change their location in the app manually.

  • Moving to a new location or city, and wanting to meet other singles in the area.
  • Desiring to connect with new matches while traveling locally, internationally, or domestically.
  • Wanting to broaden their dating pool by searching for matches in a different location nearby.
  • App users are uncomfortable with people knowing their exact location and want to change it to a nearby location for more privacy and safety (e.g., using their workplace location, if local, rather than their home location). Remember that users can only do this with a Bumble premium subscription.

Bumble stands out from other dating apps because you can use the dating service for free. The downside is that Bumble Free includes annoying ads. To block Bumble ads and make connections without the unwanted noise, try using an ad blocker.

FAQs

Can I hide my location from Bumble?

No. At this time, Bumble does not allow users to completely hide their location from the app. Users can purchase a Bumble Premium subscription and use Incognito Mode to hide their location from other users.

Can Bumble see my location when I’m not using the app?

Unless you have the location-sharing settings on your device always turned on, Bumble will not be able to see your location while not using the app. Users who are concerned about their data privacy can opt to have their location shared while using the app.

Can I change my Bumble location for free?

Bumble does not allow you to modify or hide your location manually for free. The app and website require you to enable GPS location access on your device to use them.

Your location for matches on Bumble will update automatically in the app based on your GPS location information. To change or hide your location on Bumble, you will need to purchase a Bumble Premium subscription.

Does Bumble Premium have a free trial?

Currently, Bumble is free for all users. However, the app offers a 14-day demo trial for its Bumble Premium subscription. Users will have to upload payment information to receive their free trial subscription.

As stated on the Bumble FAQ page, users must cancel before the 14-day trial period expires to avoid being charged for the premium subscription.

Bottom line

In the world of online dating, privacy and safety can be key on apps such as Bumble. It may seem challenging to keep your data private when so many apps require your location data. However, changing or hiding your location to protect yourself and date safely is not impossible.

Purchasing Bumble Premium will be the best option for those looking to hide their location from matches and other users on the app. To learn more about protecting your data and online safety, read more about how to stay safe online and consider additional security measures like VPNs with ad blockers included.
