Wipr vs. Adblock Plus: which is better?

Wipr vs. Adblock Plus

Getting the right ad blocker is imperative if you want to protect your privacy from annoying and potentially dangerous ads. Ad blockers are as unique as users, so what you choose depends on your specific needs.

One of the main differences between Wipr and Adblock Plus is their target audience. Wipr was developed just for Apple, while Adblock Plus will work with various platforms, making it more suitable if you want coverage on different devices and browsers.

Adblock Plus also has a free version that provides powerful blocking. For more features, there is a paid plan available. Wipr has no free plan but asks only for a one-time, nominal fee.

Adblock Plus provides users with a free version and a paid Premium plan. The Premium plan costs $4.00/mo, but you can save some cash by opting for the annual subscription, which costs $3.33/mo (billed annually).

Wipr costs only $1.99 one-time fee, which works great as an economical, straightforward option for blocking ads.

One standout feature Adblock Plus offers is a 60-day money-back guarantee. If you aren’t happy with your purchase, you have ample time to get a refund. This time frame is longer than many ad blockers we’ve reviewed and allows you to thoroughly test the product.

With Wipr, there’s no money-back guarantee directly from the product. However, Apple Store purchases can be refunded within 14 days with a receipt if you reach out to Apple support.

Winner: Adblock Plus wins with the option of a free version and a 60-day money-back guarantee. However, Wipr is still a great investment, offering a one-time fee for a streamlined Apple ecosystem ad blocker.

Wipr was designed to be a straightforward ad blocker, but it does have features like whitelisting, so you can keep certain content unblocked. That can be handy when you want to support your favorite blogger or content creator.

Adblock Plus has more features than Wipr, but it also comes at a higher cost for the paid plans. You get an ads counter to illustrate how many intrusive advertisements have been stopped. This feature helps you stay informed about how well your blocker is working, and we wish Wipr included this one too.

Wipr also doesn’t include blacklisting. This feature would be nice to have when you want to list specific sites you never want to receive ads from, but it isn’t essential for an effective blocking experience. Still Adblock Plus includes this feature, which makes blocking ads easier.

Winner: Adblock Plus wins with more features than Wipr offers, including an ads blocked counter and blacklisting.

Both Wipr and Adblock Plus received perfect 100/100 marks from AdBlock Tester. This test measures how your ad blocker might perform against various advertising tools in a real-world setting.

However, both ad blockers struggled with the Cover Your Tracks test. Adblock Plus provided zero protection against trackers. These include invisible trackers, which don’t make their presence known while browsing, and fingerprinting, which is how websites build profiles of you while browsing.

Wipr fared only a bit better, scoring 1/3 on this test by providing partial protection against tracking ads and invisible trackers. But if you demand more privacy, neither of these ad blockers will probably be what you need.

Cover Your Tracks test results for Wipr.

Both Wipr and Adblock Plus aced our Can You Block It tests. This test shows how effective a blocker is at covering a variety of different ads, like those annoying pop-ups.

Both ad blockers work against YouTube ads but neither showed any potential for bypassing paywalls.

Winner: Wipr wins with higher scores for providing partial protection against trackers.

We had no navigation issues, when trying out the interfaces for both Wipr and Adblock Plus. Both were easy to install and use.

Wipr was simple to set up and after that, we needed only to turn it on and off to test it. It doesn’t have a ton of bells and whistles, so there’s not much to do other than manually refresh the application.

Wipr refreshes in the background to ensure it can flag and then block all the latest ads and trackers.

We don’t think this is a downside, as Wipr is designed to be a streamlined Apple ad blocker. Since ad blockers work to keep intrusive trackers and advertisements away, Wipr has succeeded in being an effective product.

Adblock Plus was also easy to set up. During our testing, we noticed that ads typically shown during videos weren’t there. We also like that Adblock Plus has extensive compatibility, with apps for multiple operating systems, mobile devices, and browsers.

Neither product has 24/7 customer support, which is disappointing but not something we consider to be a deal breaker. Both services allow you to reach out via email for support or peruse their knowledge bases for information.

Winner: Adblock Plus offers better compatibility, winning this round. Yet, Wipr wasn’t made to be compatible across multiple platforms, so we kept that in mind during testing.

Is Wipr a good ad blocker?

Wipr is a good ad blocker if you use an Apple device and want a product with no frills.

What is the best alternative to Adblock Plus?

Adblock Plus is a good product, but if you want a free product that blocks almost all ads and allows for more customization, uBlock Origin is a good choice.

What is the disadvantage of Adblock Plus?

One disadvantage of Adblock Plus is that it didn’t protect against any trackers during our Cover Your Tracks test. That may indicate that it isn’t a good option for those who want more privacy while online.

What does Wipr Extra do?

Wipr Extra is a stronger, additional extension included with Wipr. It helps block ads on sites like YouTube.

Wipr vs. Adblock Plus: which is better?

Adblock Plus and Wipr were made for different needs. Adblock Plus is better if you have multiple devices and use various platforms. It has features that many people will want in an ad blocker, like an ads blocked counter and whitelisting.

Meanwhile, Wipr was made for the Apple environment. It’s more limited, but it was intended to be that way, allowing for easy integration between iOS and macOS.

From our tests and the features included, Adblock Plus is the better ad blocker. But if you’re part of the Apple ecosystem and want an efficient tracker blocker to use with Safari, Wipr is still a good choice.
