The best antivirus software with a password manager

The best antivirus protects your devices by offering features that complement your vulnerabilities. While all three of these top-rated antivirus software providers have a password manager, each one has its own area of expertise. Norton is the best all-in-one cybersecurity suite. McAfee offers robust web protection features for safe browsing. And TotalAV is packed with optimization tools and features to keep your devices running smoothly.

Most password vaults included with antivirus suites aren't quite as robust as dedicated password managers. Some of the biggest differences are that dedicated password managers offer advanced features like digital legacy and password sharing, and they are subjected to third-party audits to ensure the security of their vaults. All three of our top picks offer AES-256 military-grade encryption, ensuring your passwords are safe.

How we test and rate antivirus software

We use our proprietary grading rubric in all of our testing, which considers ease-of-use, third-party testing scores, internal testing scores, price, compatibility, and features offered, among other metrics.

This means that our testing process is designed to ensure that the product isn't too confusing, protects as it claims, and offers you a lot for a reasonable price. We download and run each program on our own computers on home networks, just like you would. Our ratings reflect the real-world performance of the antivirus product. This ensures that we can recreate a similar experience for you and give our best advice on whether or not it's worthwhile.

Who it’s best for

Norton 360 is best for anyone looking for a security suite that protects individuals and families both online and in the real world. Its plans offer antivirus, password management, a virtual private network (VPN), and identity theft protection with one of the highest identity theft insurance premiums available. Norton 360 has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for protection for one or more devices, parental controls, identity monitoring, or something else, Norton likely has software that will cover your needs. The password manager feature is included with even the most basic of Norton 360 plans as well as the Norton Antivirus Plus plan.

Norton Password Manager password generator

What we liked

Complete security: Since Norton has been around a long time, it really knows what it’s doing when it comes to security and protection. It consistently receives high scores in third-party evaluations, offers plenty of features, and has solutions for most of the problems you’ll encounter online. Norton brings this experience and quality to its password manager with features like a complex password generator and biometric login options like Face ID. We like that we can trust Norton.

Usability: Norton's password manager features like the password generator and password strength reports were easy to use and understand.

What we didn’t like

Pricey: All of Norton’s features don’t come cheap. The service can get pricey, especially on renewal. Compared to competitors, it’s definitely at the high end of price ranges for antivirus software renewals.

Have to purchase software separately: Many of Norton’s offerings come a la carte, which adds up quickly. If you want to purchase Norton 360 + LifeLock for your entire family, you’ll see prices that are sometimes double its competitors. We get that Norton is top of the line, but, in this economy, we don’t love the prices.

Who it’s best for

McAfee is best for anyone who wants a variety of online protection features. It offers the ability to monitor your social media, clean up your online accounts, and even protect your text messages from scammers.  McAfee has years of cybersecurity experience. The company knows what it’s doing, which is why it can offer such advanced protection in other areas as well. And if none of this matters to you and you only want simple cybersecurity, that’s also an option.

McAfee True Key password generator

What we liked

Usability: During our testing, we found McAfee True Key to be a straightforward password vault, which is a good thing. It was easy to navigate and use. Plus, inputting our extra sensitive info, like our SSN and credit card numbers, was simple.

McAfee True Key Vault wallet options

Web protection: McAfee’s password manager isn’t the only extra feature you’ll enjoy. You can use McAfee not just for its proven protection against viruses and malware but also to protect your social media accounts, keep an eye on your bank accounts, and monitor your identity. It’s great for enhanced online protection, especially with the inclusion of the McAfee WebAdvisor extension.

What we didn’t like

Confusing plans: It took tracking down customer support to confirm which McAfee antivirus plans actually include McAfee True Key. The answer is that True Key can only be purchased with all plans McAfee Essential and up.

Renewal hike: Like most annual antivirus subscriptions, McAfee offers a more affordable (AKA lower) starting rate, but the increase upon first renewal was drastic.

  • Real-time protection from viruses, malware, and online threats
  • Blocks tracking cookies and ads, proactively monitors for data breaches, and option to schedule smart scans
  • 100% compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS operating systems on up to 3 devices

Who it’s best for

TotalAV is best for anyone wanting additional protection for their devices. It offers system tune-up tools, a disk cleaner, and integrated protection for iOS and Android devices all in one plan. We found TotalAV to be extremely easy to download, install, and use. It’s also the most affordable of our top three choices, which means there’s a plan to fit your budget.

TotalAV offers comprehensive phishing protection that can identify lower-quality and spoofed websites that may contain harmful coding. Since phishing, at its core, is a way to trick you out of your data, it can sometimes be more difficult to detect. Cybersecurity protection keeps you safe from viruses and malware, but successful phishing attempts can give hackers the ability to access your accounts with valid credentials. By using TotalAV’s anti-phishing protection and password manager, you can protect yourself from those invasions as well.

TotalAV dashboard open on status tab

What we liked

Ease of use: To set up Total Password, you need to create a Master Key, which is typical with most password managers. Once the key was ready, the software automatically detected the saved passwords in our browser. It was really convenient to auto-import our saved passwords.

Setting up the TotalAV Password Vault requires you to set up a master password.

Performance tools: We really like all of the TotalAV features that help keep your devices clean and running smoothly. The disk clean-up and system tune-up tools can clear the junk from your folders and drives to ensure your computer runs at peak performance.

What we didn’t like

Glitchy password vault: Total Password is a decent, bare-bones password vault, but some of the features were glitchy. During testing, we couldn't access all the icons that popped up next to the imported and saved passwords.

Limited device protection: TotalAV has a lot of positives like advanced features and reasonable pricing, but it caps out at 8 covered devices. This could become a problem if you want to use TotalAV to cover all of your family’s devices. We wish it would increase device coverage, especially since it’s compatible with so many different operating systems.

Honorable mentions

If you’re looking for the best antivirus software, our top picks are definitely on that list. For more options, check out some of the products below that we also recommend. Antivirus is personal, and it’s great to have options when you’re deciding what’s best for you and your family.

  • Bitdefender: In addition to virus and malware protection, Bitdefender’s antivirus offers Network Threat Prevention and Web Attack Prevention to safeguard you online. Extra features like a file shredder, VPN, and anti-tracking technology just increase your all-around safety. Bitdefender Password Manager offers basic protection, but we found it to be a good product overall. Like most password vaults that come built into an antivirus suite, Bitdefender's doesn't include digital legacy or password sharing. But you do get AES-256-CCM military-grade encryption protecting your sensitive information.

FAQs

Which antivirus has the best password manager?

Norton 360, McAfee, and TotalAV all have easy-to-use, effective password managers. If you were to pick any of these antivirus services, you would get a helpful password vault to complement it. However, password vaults that come with antivirus software are not as robust in terms of features and security as dedicated password managers

Using a password manager increases your account security because you don’t have passwords floating around. Additionally, you have the ability to create longer and more complex passwords for all your accounts without worrying about forgetting them.

Does Norton have a password manager?

Yes, Norton 360 includes Norton Password Manager in its plans. Even the Norton Antivirus Plus plan, which doesn’t have as many features as Norton 360 services, includes the password vault. Which Norton plan you choose will depend on your individual needs.

Does Bitdefender include a password manager?

Yes, Bitdefender Premium Security and Ultimate Security plans both include the Bitdefender Password Manager as well as a host of other security features. Bitdefender does have other device protection plans, but they don’t include password management. If you want to purchase Bitdefender Password Manager separately, it’s compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Do security experts recommend password managers?

Yes, security experts recommend password managers for a variety of reasons. First, password managers are encrypted ways to store your login credentials. Second, this software allows you to share passwords and other information securely. Finally, it encourages you to use more complex, unique passwords for all of your accounts. If you don’t have to be responsible for remembering or even typing in your passwords, you’re more likely to use a complex and random string of numbers, letters, and characters to protect your credentials.

Bottom line

Norton 360, McAfee, and TotalAV are some of the best antivirus software available and include the added bonus of a password vault. All of these products rank highly on independent, third-party testing sites. We’ve tested them and found them all to be quality products worth your time and money.

Norton 360 gives you all-around protection both online and offline. McAfee increases your internet security with intuitive features. Finally, TotalAV is budget-friendly while also keeping your devices clean and running smoothly. Using an antivirus and a password manager reduces your chances of becoming a victim of online cyber threats. But if you want more robust security features with your password vault, like digital legacy, password sharing, data breach monitoring, and more, consider using a dedicated password manager.
