How we test and rate identity theft protection services

To review identity theft protection services, we sign up for the service several days prior to our review. This allows the service time to begin populating our dashboard with identity and credit monitoring information and send us real-time alerts. During this time, we also evaluate the service's ease of use, contact customer support, and play around with the extra features.

After spending some time with the service, we use our proprietary grading rubric which calculates a star rating based on prices, identity monitoring features, credit features, and other criteria.

What we liked

Full cybersecurity suite: As a robust cybersecurity suite, Aura can save you money in the long run while protecting you from hackers and scammers. In addition to identity theft protection, insurance, and remediation, all Aura plans include real-time antivirus protection, a password manager, light data removal services, 3-bureau credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, and a toggle on/off VPN. We've found that credit monitoring goes hand-in-hand with solid identity theft protection services.

Risk-free: Aura offers a 60-day money-back guarantee to determine if the service is for you. Aura includes seniors (and children) living at different residences in family plans. This allows you to sign up for one monthly price that covers everyone, even if they don't live under the same roof.

Versatile plans: If you live in a multi-generational household, the family plan includes protections for kids, including parental controls, Safe Gaming, and cyberbullying alerts. We also like that there’s an option for couples without kids. Many other identity protection services don’t offer protection for more than one adult without including children. If you want to cover you and your partner without children, the couples plan gives you that option.

What we didn’t like

Offenders list availability: The registered sex offenders list is only available with the family plan. Offenders can target anyone, not just children, so we aren’t sure why this wouldn’t be an across-the-board feature.

Since the registered offender lists are available from a Department of Justice (DoJ) website, it wasn’t a deal breaker. But with so many extras included in Aura, we’re not sure why this one was left out.

Aura pros and cons

Pros
  • Robust, easy-to-use cybersecurity suite
  • Offers 60-days risk-free and up to 68% off
  • "Set-and-forget" ID theft protection with financial and credit monitoring
Cons
  • Offenders list only available with the family plan

Who it’s best for

LifeLock by Norton is best for anyone looking for a good value identity protection service that's worth it. Lifelock has many features in all three pricing tiers with a low cost for the first year.

Lifelock also offers the most identity theft insurance out of our three picks, starting at up to $1.05 million in coverage with the Standard plan through up to $3 million in coverage with the Ultimate Plus plan. This means you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.

LifeLock Restoration services tab

What we liked

Brand reliability: LifeLock is a Norton product, and brand recognition comes with a certain level of trust. It has the highest individual identity theft insurance coverage of any of the protection plans here, especially so if you opt for Ultimate Plus.

Couples plans: We also loved that it came with a plan that included two adults and no children. You can also add on device protection like a virtual private network (VPN) or antivirus software for an additional charge.

Payment flexibility: Norton LifeLock lets you choose to pay monthly or yearly, making it feasible for almost all budgets. You can enjoy all of the Norton products in one convenient portal. Norton’s services are customizable, depending on what you need, with its Ultimate Plus plan including reports from all three major credit bureaus and home title monitoring for complete coverage.

What we didn’t like

Price hikes: The introductory price for LifeLock is good, but once you get past the first year, it auto-renews at a higher price. (The renewal prices are listed on each plan, so you know what it will cost.) Also, renewal is automatic, so you’ll need to set a reminder to either cancel or remember that the second-year price is coming out of your account on the date of purchase.

Heads-up: Your LifeLock plan automatically renews

Plan ahead of time with a reminder or calendar note to avoid being blindsided by a price increase. If you want to avoid the price hike, see how LifeLock compares to Aura.

Norton LifeLock pros and cons

Pros
  • Up to $3 million in ID theft insurance with Ultimate Plus plan
  • Cybersecurity option with malware and phishing protection
  • 60-day money-back guarantee
Cons
  • Cost increases after first year

  • Easy-to-use online security tool that cleans up your browser, removes malicious extensions, and checks for privacy violations
  • Blocks harmful emails, texts, and webpages
  • Stops invasive notifications and monitors data breaches for your information

Who it’s best for

Guardio is a user-friendly identity protection product that's relatively easy to use and won't weigh down your computer. Lightweight protection means you won't notice it running, your machine won't lag, and you won't get that weird processing icon that tells you the computer is thinking too hard. Less glitching means less need to contact customer service.

Guardio open on Identity tab with list of identity monitoring

What we liked

Free plan: Guardio Free offers basic browsing protection. You'll get suspicious site detection, on-demand scans, phishing alerts on limited sites, and a history of personal data leaks. If you've clicked on your share of scammy websites, Guardio can help you avoid them in the future.

Consistent pricing: A lot of competitors offer a lower starting price but then increase it upon renewal. Guardio doesn't do that. If Guardio chooses to raise prices, the company will contact you. Unless they announce it, you can expect the same pricing structure year after year.

Security: In our testing, Guardio did a fantastic job protecting against phishing, but it also protected us against malware. We were genuinely surprised.

What we didn’t like

Upgrades needed: If you're using the free product, you'll have to upgrade to remove any issues Guardio may find. The free plan still protects you against suspicious sites and scammy websites, but any malware scans that turn up issues will need an upgrade to resolve.

Guardio pros and cons

Pros
  • Free option
  • Consistent pricing
  • Security features
Cons
  • Upgrades needed for malware removal

  • Protect your devices with included VPN and antivirus
  • 24/7 access to identity restoration experts

Who it’s best for

OmniWatch doesn't include a family plan, but its individual plan is comprehensive. If you're a single person living alone, this plan has everything you may need to guard your identity. Pricing is reasonable, and there are useful features like antivirus and a virtual private network.

OmniWatch Alerts tab filtered by data breach alerts

What we liked

Insurance premiums: OmniWatch offers up to $2 million, whereas many other identity theft protection products offer $1 million. The insurance will repay any financial accounts that may have been hacked or lost funds due to identity theft. Finally, customer care is US-based, so they understand the unique aspects of US financial and identity data.

Organized alerts: OmniWatch lets you view your alerts by category or all together. If you want to see only your credit alerts, you can filter everything else out. If you want to see everything together, you have that option as well.

What we didn’t like

Dark web only: OmniWatch only monitors the dark web for identity theft. While the dark web is a hotbed of activity, identity theft happens in a variety of places.

OmniWatch pros and cons

Pros
  • Generous ID theft insurance
  • Organized alerts
  • Security extras like antivirus and a VPN
Cons
  • Only monitors ID theft on the dark web

How to choose the best identity theft protection service for seniors

If none of the options we listed suit your needs, there are questions you should ask when exploring other identity theft prevention services. Consider what’s important to you, your budget, and your overall comfortability with navigating remediation if you ever need it.

Let’s look at a few of the questions you should consider when shopping for ID protection:

  • How much does it cost?
  • Does it alert you to data breaches?
  • Will it alert you to address changes?
  • Does it monitor credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax?
  • Is there dark web monitoring?
  • Will it monitor court records for your name?
  • How often does it provide credit score updates?
  • Does it monitor suspicious activity on bank accounts or investment accounts?
  • Does it assist with identity recovery?
  • Does it provide identity theft insurance and, if so, how much? (Up to $1 million is most common.)
  • Is the service’s mobile app encrypted with AES-256?
  • Does it offer apps for the devices and operating systems you use?
  • Does its privacy policy state it doesn’t sell data?
  • Will it scan for social media scams and fraud?

Does LifeLock have a senior discount?

No, Norton LifeLock doesn't offer a senior discount. It's one of the lower-priced identity theft protection options on the market, but the price increases after the first year. Aura identity protection services offer at least a 68% senior discount on products and services.

Bottom line: The best ID theft protection for seniors

Aura, Norton LifeLock, Guardio, and OmniWatch are four of the best ID theft protection services for seniors because of their prices and offerings. While there is a myriad of services across the internet, these four provide bonus features like additional device security, couples plans, free options, and individual plans for seniors living by themselves. Each option here makes protecting your identity a little easier and can help with identity theft losses.

Overall, we think Aura offers the best protection plan based on ease of use, price, and perks, including a full "set-and-forget" cybersecurity suite.
