How we test and rate identity theft protection services

Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 10+ identity theft protection services using a consistent process. We sign up several days before formal testing begins, giving each service time to populate our dashboard with real monitoring data.

Then, we evaluate each product across six areas:

  • Identity and credit monitoring (30%): We assess how comprehensive the service is, specifically checking for SSN monitoring, financial account monitoring, credit monitoring across all three bureaus, and more.
  • Basics (20%): We review how many adults and children can be covered, as well as the maximum identity theft insurance value offered.
  • Editor's score (20%): We evaluate the service's ease of use, security practices, the company's breach history, and anything else that's not addressed in the other categories.
  • Value (15%): We compare the lowest and highest monthly plan prices against what's actually included at each tier. We also check if the service offers a free trial.
  • Customer service (10%): We determine if there are several options available for human support.
  • Extras (5%): We check whether the service includes additional tools we find valuable: dark web monitoring, social media monitoring, data breach alerts, and lost wallet protection.

We retest all identity theft protection services at least once a year. To learn more about how we test, read our full identity theft protection testing methodology here.

  • #1 rated ID theft protection service with a full suite of monitoring tools
  • Includes up to $1 million in ID theft insurance per person for up to five adults
  • Protect your children with robust parental controls and gaming alerts

Who it’s best for

Aura is ideal for families that require comprehensive coverage without incurring excessive costs. Bonus if you want an AI-powered security suite that's hands-off. If you’ve read recently about data leaks at schools that have exposed children’s Social Security numbers (SSNs), you may be wondering what you can do to protect your kids’ identities. Child identity theft and credit card fraud are real crimes that can be a complete nightmare to address. These are some ways kids’ identities are stolen:

  • Hackers (accessing schools, doctor offices, sports team info, etc.)
  • Scams (parents can get scammed and lose their kids’ info)
  • Phishing (either kids themselves or family members)
  • Identity thieves (purchasing SSNs from ransomware attacks)

But Aura has your family covered. Not only does the service provide protection for children, but it also offers parental controls, Safe Gaming features, and the ability to freeze your child’s credit. This can assist your children in starting their credit journey with a clean slate when it comes time.

Aura Parental Controls ProtectMe

What we liked

Ease of use: Aura can prioritize what’s important to you by allowing you to customize your experience from the start. When you sign up, Aura asks a series of questions about your goals to help you hone in on what’s truly important to you. Aura guides you through the setup process, ensuring all your settings are activated from the start.

The dashboard is comprehensive, easy to navigate, and user-friendly. Aura provides weekly summaries via the dashboard and emails to keep you informed about the service's progress.

Robust identity and credit monitoring: The features are robust, including, as previously mentioned, child protection features. We were also impressed with Aura’s additional features that go beyond identity theft protection:

  • Credit protection for all adults on the plan
  • Digital vault for monitoring names, email addresses, gamer handles, and more
  • Credit reports and scores from all three major credit bureaus
  • Easy toggle credit lock with Experian
  • Safe Gaming with cyberbullying alerts
  • Sex offender geo-alerts

Aura vault monitors personal data

Financial account monitoring: One feature unique to Aura is the ability to monitor your individual transactions, so you can receive a notification if there’s a purchase made over your spending limit.

Personalized remediation: Aura's remediation experts are available 24/7. Once you contact support about fraud or identity theft, Aura's team will create a personalized remediation plan for you to follow, including a step-by-step process of actionable next steps.

What we didn’t like

All of Aura’s extras and features don’t come cheap. Aura has one of the highest price tags we’ve seen. If you want to cover your family, you’ll be paying $25.00/mo monthly. The annual plans will save you money, but you’ll still be spending a lot annually on the family plan.

Aura may not work for you if you have a large family and a tight budget. Other services like Identity Guard are less expensive and still have the core features you need to have identity recovery services for your family.

Pros
  • Up to $1 million in identity theft insurance per adult
  • Robust tools for children's security, including parental controls and Safe Gaming
  • Includes a password manager, VPN, and antivirus, and more
Cons
  • No social media account monitoring
  • Provides only VantageScore, not FICO Score

Best ID Theft Service for Comprehensive Monitoring
Identity Protection
LifeLock
  • Top-rated identity theft protection service
  • Provides up to $3 million in coverage
  • Multiple monitoring features including dark web, home title, and social media monitoring

Who it’s best for

If you’re looking for extensive insurance coverage with your identity theft prevention service, LifeLock has it. While this isn't the only feature available to you, LifeLock’s insurance is more generous than other plans.

Most services offer up to $1 million in coverage per adult, but LifeLock starts with over $1 million in coverage, and its Total plan covers up to $3 million per adult. Those funds cover lawyers, stolen funds reimbursement, personal expense compensation, and any other costs accrued from restoring your identity. This is great news if you ever need LifeLock’s remediation services.

LifeLock Restoration services tab

What we liked

Robust monitoring services: LifeLock includes more identity monitoring features than most competitors, including:

  • Dark web monitoring
  • Home title monitoring
  • 401k and investment account activity alerts
  • Credit file lock and payday loan lock
  • Social media monitoring

Norton 360 deluxe dashboard

Ease of use: We tested LifeLock on iOS for an iPhone and found the app easy to install and use. This isn’t the case for all ID protection services, so knowing we could easily access our account in case of emergency impressed us.

Continuing the theme of access, we found the dashboard easy to use as well. It has a clean design that allows you to access all the services quickly. We didn’t need to hunt for features. Overall, this experience was good, and we are comfortable recommending LifeLock.

24/7 U.S.-based restoration experts: If you suspect you're a victim of fraud or theft, LifeLock's U.S.-based agents can be reached 24/7. LifeLock is so confident that its services can help you that restoration is actually guaranteed. We like that, too.

What we didn’t like

Antivirus is extra: LifeLock offers plans that bundle in Norton 360, so you can meet many of your cybersecurity needs with just one subscription. However, a lot of competitors will include real-time antivirus software in the ID theft subscription.

Pros
  • Provides up to $3 million in coverage with Ultimate Plus
  • Offers financial, identity, credit, dark web, home title, and social media monitoring
  • Has highly rated mobile apps
Cons
  • Certain features are exclusive to higher plan tiers

Who it’s best for

While Identity Guard and LifeLock look similar in pricing, LifeLock jumps up for the second year while Identity Guard doesn’t. If huge price hikes for something you like aren’t your thing, Identity Guard may be the answer.

Identity Guard main dashboard

What we liked

Affordability: We loved the price on the Value plan because it’s one of the lowest we’ve seen. We were also impressed with how easy it is to use Identity Guard. The portal is clean, and you can navigate through it with ease. Its additional features, like the password manager, were a bonus that we appreciated.

A part of the Aura brand: Like Aura, Identity Guard is designed with the user in mind. Its intuitive artificial intelligence monitoring, which is powered by IBM Watson, scans the dark web for any mention of you. Identity Guard’s use of AI means that it is learning and evolving to protect you, even as threats become more advanced. We love tools that work smarter, not harder.

Robust monitoring features: Even though Identity Guard is inexpensive, it still offers plenty of features that we love, including:

  • Bank account monitoring
  • Data breach notifications
  • Dark web monitoring
  • High-risk transaction monitoring
  • Three-bureau credit monitoring
  • Password manager

What we didn’t like

Restoration services cost the most: We found that Identity Guard only offers dedicated identity restoration assistance on its Ultra plan, which is the most premium plan. If you're looking for an identity theft protection plan on a budget, you'll be on your own to rectify any cases of identity theft if you opt for one of Identity Guard's basic plans.

Pros
  • User-friendly identity theft protection service
  • Affordable Value plan
  • Includes extra features like a password manager
Cons
  • White glove fraud remediation is limited to Ultra plan
  • Covering families can get expensive

How to choose the best identity theft protection service

If you’re in the market for identity theft protection services, there are questions you should ask when doing research. Whether you’re looking for just yourself or your entire family, some core features are indicative of a good identity theft protection company. Ask yourself these questions when comparing brands:

  • How much does it cost?
  • Does it alert users to data breaches in multiple areas?
  • Does it monitor credit reports from all three bureaus, Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax?
  • How often does it provide credit score updates?
  • Does it assist with identity recovery?
  • Does it provide identity theft insurance, and if so, how much? (Up to $1 million is most common.)
  • Are there extras like antivirus software or malware protection?
  • Does it offer apps for multiple common device types and operating systems?
  • Does its privacy policy state it doesn’t sell data?
  • Does it cover children or other family members?
  • How is the customer service experience?
  • Is the mobile app highly rated?
  • Does it make it easy to monitor your identity from anywhere?
  • Are there fraud alerts?
  • Extra features like social media monitoring, sex offender maps, credit report monitoring, device protection, credit freeze, and credit monitoring services.
  • Is it recognized by the Federal Trade Commission?

FAQs

Why is it so important to have restoration services with your ID theft protection?

Restoring your identity after it’s been stolen can be an incredibly frustrating process. If you purchase ID theft protection, make sure you choose one that also helps you restore your identity.

You won’t need to worry about calling the right agencies, dealing with the credit bureaus, or juggling lawyers to deal with identity theft losses. An agent will be able to help you deal with all the legal ramifications of identity theft without the headache.

What is the best way to restore my identity?

While restoring your identity without a service is possible, you’ll find it much easier if you have a professional on your side. Identity theft protection services are well-equipped to assist you in restoring your good name.

Most will even pay for the remediation services when involving outside parties like lawyers and private investigators. Getting your identity back can get pretty pricey, so these services provide the tools and insurance to help.

How do I know if I have been a victim of identity theft?

To know if you’re a victim of identity theft, look for obvious signs of suspicious activity. Unrecognized purchases on your financial accounts, stolen funds, or unfamiliar line items on your credit report are all indicators.

Sometimes, however, you won’t know until it’s too late. If someone is able to steal the deed to your home or change your address to intercept mail, it could be a long time until you realize this is happening.

Bottom line: The best ID theft restoration services

ID theft protection is definitely worth it for your peace of mind, especially if you find yourself affected by identity theft. We think Aura is the best overall, and the ID theft service will make sure everyone from your grandma to your kids is covered to prevent theft.

LifeLock offers high insurance coverage that ensures you won’t pay out-of-pocket for remediation, while Identity Guard's pricing won't have a huge price hike after the first year like LifeLock's plans.
