NordVPN: Best for unique features
Who it’s best for
NordVPN is ideal if you’re looking for a well-rounded service with some unique features. It offers the best balance of privacy, security, and performance.
What we liked
There’s so much to like about NordVPN. It offers all the “regular” VPN features, like split tunneling, a kill switch, torrenting support, and a variety of servers. What makes NordVPN stand out, however, is the addition of unique features like Onion Over VPN, double VPN servers, Meshnet, Threat Protection, and so much more. In addition to all these features, NordVPN offers excellent security as well.
If you’re looking for a VPN while traveling in Italy, or you want an Italian IP address to bypass VPN blocks on geo-restricted content, NordVPN is an excellent choice. Since NordVPN doesn’t keep logs, you won’t need to worry about your activity being monitored. We love how much privacy and efficiency NordVPN affords its users.
What we didn’t like
We also wish NordVPN still offered streaming support for Netflix. It used to have an option on its site, but as Netflix has cracked down on VPN usage, NordVPN removed the support. We can still watch Netflix with it, but now, if there’s an issue, there’s no one to help.

Surfshark: Best for antivirus bundle
Who it’s best for
Anyone who wants to bundle antivirus and a comprehensive VPN into one convenient location. Many antivirus services offer VPNs, but they’re usually not very robust. Surfshark provides you with a secure antivirus solution and a superb VPN service.
What we liked
Surfshark offers a lot. You can bundle your VPN, antivirus, and identity theft protection into its Surfshark One+ program. It’s all conveniently located in one easy-to-use dashboard. Since Surfshark is compatible with various operating systems and browsers, people using multiple operating systems can cover all their devices under a single dashboard.
Surfshark is great for security but doesn’t skimp on features, either. CleanWeb stops ads, trackers, malware, and phishing attempts, while the bypasser feature makes split tunneling easy. Surfshark’s NoBorders mode also makes traveling easy while staying connected to your VPN. On top of all of this, Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections and is highly affordable.
What we didn’t like
Surfshark has many great features, but it’s still located in The Netherlands, an Eyes Alliance country. The no-logs policy ensures that Surfshark doesn’t keep track of what you’re doing, which is great. However, as government surveillance of citizens increases, we still don’t love that Surfshark keeps its headquarters in a place that doesn’t have the strictest privacy laws.
Surfshark specs

ExpressVPN: Best for strong encryption
Who it’s best for
If you’re looking for proprietary features, ExpressVPN has built its own protocol called Lightway and its own router, Aircove. These in-house features allow ExpressVPN to monitor its encryption for those looking for strong security.
What we liked
ExpressVPN is a strong, secure option, and we like that it builds its own stuff. The ExpressVPN team created both Lightway, its proprietary protocol, and the Aircove router. The Aircove will cover your entire space in Wi-Fi, so if you want to watch Italian TV on your phone in one room while it streams on a TV in another, you can do that with one connection.
ExpressVPN includes a lot of great features, including 24/7 live chat support, a password manager, ad and tracker blockers, and new parental controls that were just introduced. We love how security-focused this VPN is and all the benefits you can expect from it.
What we didn’t like
ExpressVPN is powerful, but it’s also pricey. We love the Aircove, but to use it, you must purchase a subscription to ExpressVPN; the Aircove router doesn’t come with a subscription just by buying the hardware. The Aircove will work without ExpressVPN as a standard router if you ever let your subscription lapse, but you won’t get full use of it without the VPN service.
ExpressVPN specs

Best VPNs for Italy FAQs
What is the best VPN for Italy?
The best VPN for Italy offers a variety of features, extra security, support for streaming services, and reasonable pricing. We chose highly rated VPNs that include all of these features. NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN meet all of these standards, plus they include extras that will ensure your online safety.
Do VPNs work in Italy?
Yes, VPNs work in Italy. Because Italy has no laws against VPNs, you can use one while browsing online. We suggest VPNs with fast servers and plenty of features. Paid VPNs are your best option, as free VPNs can be slow and compromise your online security.
Is there a free VPN for Italy?
We strongly advise against free VPNs as they can often have WebRTC leaks and logging and be generally unsafe. TunnelBear is a free VPN with Italian servers that offers security. However, you’ll probably have a data cap and slow speeds. This might be a quick option if you only need it for a few things. If you plan on using a VPN long-term for Italy, you’ll want to consider purchasing a premium service.
Are VPNs legal in Italy?
Yes, VPNs are legal in Italy. VPNs are legal in most countries, but you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose is headquartered in a country outside of the 14 Eyes Alliance countries to ensure strict privacy laws. You’ll also want a no-logs VPN that doesn’t track or record your activity. Finally, if you’re unsure whether a VPN is legal in the country where you’ll be, make sure to search ahead of time. It’s better to take a few minutes to research than to be prosecuted while overseas.
How can I get an Italian IP address?
There are several ways to get an Italian IP address, but the easiest is to use a VPN to change your location. Obfuscated servers hide the fact that you’re using a VPN so you can circumvent issues with streaming services and other sites that block VPN usage.
Bottom line: The best VPNs for Italy
The best VPNs for Italy are NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN. Each service offers unique aspects that can fit your individual needs. We like that each has money-back guarantees so you can try them without fear of being locked into a contract. We’re also fans of the strong security, additional features, and variety of servers each service offers.
NordVPN offers unique features not offered by other services. Surfshark offers a variety of security products that can be bundled together for ultimate protection. ExpressVPN built its proprietary protocol and router for strong encryption. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
