Want to change your location on YouTube TV? There are two ways. You can update your Home Area, the ZIP code tied to your account, up to twice in any rolling 12-month period. Or you can update your Playback Area, which follows your current location.
To watch out-of-market channels, you’ll need to trick YouTube TV into thinking you’re somewhere else. In a browser, a VPN may be enough. But on the YouTube TV app, it likely won’t be. In our Android test, a VPN alone didn’t change our playback area. It only moved once we turned on Surfshark’s GPS Override feature.

If you want to change your YouTube TV location to one that differs from your current physical location, you'll need to follow a few additional steps than other streaming services.
In a browser, connecting to a VPN server in the location you want may be enough. That changes how your IP address appears to any site you connect to. On the YouTube TV app, you’ll likely need a GPS spoofer too.
This should work for YouTube TV if:
YouTube asks to verify your location through your browser.
You’re traveling and want YouTube to keep showing you the same channels you watch at home. Turn on the VPN and connect to a server in your home area. On the app, you may also need a GPS spoofer.
Sometimes, you’ll be asked to verify your location using your device’s GPS, which differs from your IP address location. Most VPN apps can’t help with this.
Surfshark is an exception. Its Android app has a built-in GPS spoofing tool called GPS Override, making it one of the best VPNs for YouTube TV.
We tested it. From Austin, we connected to Surfshark’s Denver server and tapped Update next to the Current playback area in YouTube TV. With GPS Override turned off, YouTube TV still placed us in Austin. With GPS Override on, it switched our playback area to Denver.

Your Home Area is based on your home zip code. When you sign up for YouTube TV, you’ll enter your address to verify your service area, and it'll tell you what content the platform can show you.
You can update your Home Area only twice in any 12-month period, and you must be in the new area to make the change. Note that it's a rolling 12 months, not a calendar year.
The fastest way: go to tv.youtube.com/settings/area and select Update next to Home Area.

With YouTube TV, your current playback area is different from your Home Area. Instead, it's based on your current geographical area.

YouTube TV detects your location based on the tags associated with your current location, using information such as your IP address or your device's GPS location. If you travel outside your Home Area, you won’t be able to watch local networks available only in your designated Home Area. Instead, you’ll have access to local programs in the region you're in.
For example, if you travel to another state, YouTube will bookmark the new location as your playback area, and you’ll be able to watch the shows available there. You won't be able to record content or catch your local home-area programs while you're physically away.

To change your current playback area on your iPhone, Android, or web browser:
If YouTube TV sent you to tv.youtube.com/verify, it couldn't determine your location on its own and wants your phone to confirm where you are. The trigger is simple: according to YouTube TV's location documentation, if YouTube TV can't correctly identify your location, it will ask you to go to tv.youtube.com/verify and allow the site to access your device's location.
This happens most often on smart TVs and streaming devices because YouTube TV's documented process for updating a playback area on a TV routes the location check through a mobile device rather than the TV itself.

Two other things worth knowing. If you're on a work or school Chrome device, your network administrator may control location settings, and you may not be able to change them yourself.
And if you're seeing errors like "Turn on browser location permissions" or "Area update unavailable," Google's location and playback area troubleshooting guide recommends confirming location sharing is on for your mobile browser, using a mobile device rather than a computer for the check, updating both devices, and clearing your cache.
If there's a technical error, YouTube TV may still recognize your previous Home Area even after you update your current playback location. If this happens to you, try the following steps:
