Password Manager
Keeper
  • User-friendly password manager with high-end security features, like offline vault, self-destruct, and more
  • Zero-trust and zero-knowledge encryption, so only you can access your data
  • Completes annual third-party audits to ensure your information stays as safe as possible

NordPass is the best password manager for most people. It easily wins on value, includes extra features such as data breach alerts and email masking, and is easy to use — making it a great choice for everyday users. Plus, NordPass is owned by a top cybersecurity company, which aligns with its security features, including MFA, biometrics, and a zero-knowledge architecture.

While NordPass and Keeper are both known for their security features, Keeper undergoes more rigorous security audits, offers unique extras like self-destruct mode, and maintains a broader certification portfolio. In short, NordPass is secure, but Keeper is more secure.

I'll cover more of the differences between NordPass and Keeper and dig into their costs, features, and usability.

How we test and rate password managers

We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.

By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full testing methodology here.

NordPass pros and cons

NordPass is an excellent value. It includes all the features you'd want from a password manager, such as autofill, a password generator to create strong passwords, password-strength reports, and digital legacy features. It also includes extras like data breach alerts and email masking at no additional cost.

NordPass's price is a major selling point — plans start at just $1.49/mo per month, making it a very affordable option. You can also bundle it with other Nord Security products, like NordVPN, which is convenient. My biggest complaint is that the free tier is limited to only a single device, but it's enough to get a feel for the service.

Pros
  • Includes useful extra features
  • Affordable pricing, especially for the family plan
  • Backed by the trusted Nord brand
Cons
  • Free plan limited to one device

Keeper pros and cons

Keeper is packed with useful features, but its big focus is definitely security. The company holds a wide range of security and privacy certifications, including SOC 2 and ISO 27001. It also updates these annually. Many of Keeper's features are centered on enhanced security, such as self-destruct mode, which automatically erases data after a set number of failed login attempts.

Unfortunately, you'll pay for that security. Keeper costs more than twice as much as NordPass, with a starting price of $3.58/mo per month. The free plan is also limited to the point of being unusable — it's basically a fallback if your subscription lapses. But if you need a service that takes security seriously, Keeper is the way to go.

Pros
  • Strong security-focused features
  • Maintains consistent security certifications
  • User-friendly interface
Cons
  • More expensive than many competitors
  • Free plan is extremely limited

Which password manager is the better value?

NordPass and Keeper both offer two plans: a personal plan for one user and a family plan for multiple users. In both cases, the family plan is the better value, assuming you can use the extra accounts — for the price of two personal accounts, you get 5 with Keeper or 6 with NordPass. In Keeper's case, the family plan also includes 10 GB of cloud storage at no additional cost.

That said, there are no other substantial differences between the two plans. That makes the choice simple: If you just need one vault, go with personal, and if you need more than one, go with the family option.

Keeper also offers some additional services you can add for an extra fee: cloud storage (up to 100 GB), data breach alerts, and dedicated customer support. While these are nice, I'd greatly prefer them to be included, since Keeper is already significantly more expensive than NordPass.

Winner: NordPass is a better value — it handles the basics of password management very well at a lower price point than Keeper.

Which password manager has the better features?

Both password managers cover the basics well, but NordPass offers some useful extras that give it a slight edge for everyday use.

On the surface, NordPass and Keeper offer very similar feature sets. They both cover the basics of password management — generating secure passwords, autofilling them, and sharing them with others. Both also offer useful extras, such as password strength reports and digital legacy features.

The main differentiators are in file storage and extra features. NordPass includes 3 GB of storage across all plans, which you can use to securely store private documents. Keeper includes 10 GB on the family plan, but if you want it on the personal plan, you'll have to pay extra.

As far as extra features go, NordPass offers email masking (which lets you generate a random email address to use when signing up for websites and services).

Meanwhile, Keeper offers self-destruct mode as well as Keeper DNA, which lets you use a smartwatch for two-factor authentication. For most people, I'd say email masking is more useful day-to-day, but Keeper's features are great for security-focused users.

Keeper two-factor authentication options

Winner: NordPass — although the two have similar core features, NordPass's extras are slightly more helpful in everyday use.

Which password manager is safer?

Keeper's heavy focus on security gives it the edge here, but NordPass is also a very safe option.

First, let's get something out of the way — technically, NordPass uses a more modern encryption algorithm and hashing function. However, both are highly secure, and you're very unlikely to ever notice the difference in day-to-day usage.

The real differences come down to intangibles. While both have undergone security audits, Keeper undergoes this testing every year, while NordPass has a less strict schedule. For example, NordPass's last SOC 2 certification was in 2023 (SOC 2 is an auditing framework that ensures service providers handle data securely).

Keeper also boasts a truly impressive array of security certifications, including annual SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications. Keeper also offers additional security-centered features, such as Keeper DNA. Ultimately, Keeper's heavy emphasis on security makes it the safer option — although NordPass is still quite secure.

Winner: Keeper. Keeper's annual certifications and audits, combined with powerful security-focused features, make it the safer option.

Which password manager has better compatibility and customer support?

NordPass and Keeper are very similar on these fronts, but Keeper's concierge add-on gives it a slight edge.

NordPass and Keeper are very similar in both compatibility and customer support. Both cover all the major platforms, including Linux. Both also offer extensions for all the major browsers, so your passwords are available wherever you need them.

In terms of customer support, both NordPass and Keeper offer email, live chat, and online guides. Both have 24/7 customer support available. Keeper does offer an add-on service called Keeper Concierge that provides several benefits, including a guided installation process, training on Keeper's security features, and tips on security best practices.

Winner: Keeper has a slight edge here thanks to its Keeper Concierge service, but it's very close.

FAQs

Is NordPass affiliated with NordVPN?

Yes — NordPass and NordVPN are both products of Nord Security. Nord makes a ton of online privacy and security tools, including NordPass, NordVPN, NordLocker (cloud storage), NordProtect (identity theft protection), and even Saily, a secure eSIM app that provides data plans when traveling. There are bundles available that combine the different services under a single plan. Learn more about our experience testing NordVPN.

Does NordPass sell your data?

No, NordPass does not sell your data. In fact, NordPass can't even access your data — the service uses a zero-knowledge architecture, which means data is encrypted and the company can't access, view, or recover it.

Does Keeper include dark web monitoring?

Yes, Keeper offers dark web monitoring through its BreachWatch feature. BreachWatch scans the dark web for account credentials that match what's stored in your Keeper vault. It's available as a paid add-on at $26.99/yr for personal accounts and $53.99/yr for family accounts.

Can I share passwords with someone who doesn't have the same password manager?

This depends on the password manager. NordPass and Keeper generally require the recipient to have an account, but Keeper lets you send one-time-use links that do not require an account, which can be very handy.
