Opera VPN Pro is a solid, but not outstanding VPN from the makers of the Opera browser. It's best suited for existing Opera users who want to keep their internet traffic encrypted and bypass geo-restrictions.
However, Opera VPN Pro doesn't include standard security features like a kill switch and split tunneling, and the server countries are limited. Many of the best VPNs can do the same while offering more features at lower prices.

How we test and rate VPNs
Every VPN in this guide is hands-on tested by our team using a consistent process. We evaluate each product across seven areas:
- Features (30.5%): We review every VPN for inclusion of a working kill switch, split tunneling, multiple VPN protocols, multi-hop servers, and the option to add a dedicated IP. We also review the size of the server network and number of server countries available.
- Test results (20%): We run download and upload speed tests with no VPN as a baseline, then connect to servers in four regions (U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia) to calculate the VPN's impact on our speeds. We also connect to each region's Netflix library to verify streaming access, and run WebRTC and DNS leak tests using BrowserLeaks to confirm our real IP and DNS data remain masked.
- Editor's score (15%): We use each VPN ourselves, evaluating interface clarity, feature accessibility, and anything else that affects day-to-day use that isn't captured by our other criteria.
- Value (11%): We evaluate each product's value based on starting price, money-back guarantee length, and the number of simultaneous connections allowed under a single subscription.
- Privacy and security (9.5%): We verify each VPN's no-logs policy, check whether it has been independently audited, review its encryption standards, and note its headquarters jurisdiction.
- Customer service (5%): We evaluate how thorough the customer support is based on how many ways there are to contact human support.
- Compatibility (3%): We review each VPN's availability across desktop, mobile, browsers, routers, and smart devices.
We test VPNs at least twice a year. Testing has been carried out across Windows, macOS, and mobile, so our results reflect real-world performance across devices.

Star rating summary
Opera VPN Pro received a 3.8 star rating. It covers some essentials, including AES-256 encryption, DNS leak protection, and an independently audited no-logs policy.
Opera VPN Pro's security gaps led to its low scores in the features and test results categories. There's no kill switch, no split tunneling, and no multi-hop servers, which are standard features on most competing VPNs at similar or lower price points.

Our experience
Opera VPN Pro isn't a standalone app. You can use it only through the Opera browser. You can add a widget to your home screen or create a shortcut in Quick Settings for easier access.
The Opera VPN Pro client was easy to use and navigate; it's like an extension you can open when a browser window opens. You simply click the power button to turn it on or off and click the current location to reveal the full server list.
We were disappointed that the service had actually removed some of its customization. You can no longer change the protocol or select a specific server location in a country.
Opera VPN Pro can largely help you stay anonymous online, but it can't do much more than that. If you want reliable geo-unblocking, torrenting support, and advanced security options, we recommend picking one of the best VPN services for this year instead.
Opera VPN Pro prices and plans
Opera VPN Pro has monthly, six-month, and annual subscription plans that go for $4.00-$8.00/mo. If you want to save money on a VPN, the annual plan will save you 50% compared to the monthly plan.
Opera VPN Pro appears affordable, but it offers poor value for the price. Other providers, like Surfshark, offer more features, better performance, and cheaper long-term subscriptions.
| Plan | 1-month plan | 6-month plan | 1-year plan | Learn more |
| Price per month | $8.00/mo | $5.00/mo | $4.00/mo | View plans |
Opera VPN Pro offers a seven-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. This gives you plenty of time to test it before you pay for an Opera VPN Pro subscription.
Opera VPN Pro features
Opera VPN Pro lacks core security features usually included with other virtual private networks. However, it protects you against DNS leaks and has decent server coverage.
Let's explore Opera VPN Pro and its functionality.
Server count and countries
- 3,000+ servers in 30+ countries
Coverage across 30+ countries is good., but top-tier providers typically offer VPN servers in 100+ countries.
We were also disappointed by Opera VPN Pro's server selection. Previously, the U.S. and Canada were the only countries with multiple server locations. Now, none of the server countries let you pick a specific location, despite touting 3,000+ servers.
The in-client server list doesn’t provide real-time information about pings and server loads. The client can pick an optimal location, but it may not be in the U.S. In our case, our optimal location was in Mexico.
No-logs policy and headquarters
- Opera VPN logs policy: No logs
- Opera VPN headquarters: Norway
According to its privacy policy, Opera VPN Pro doesn't collect or store records of the webpages or sites you visit while connected. It only shares the information required to identify you as a subscriber to its third-party service provider, but not your name, email, or other personal data.
In September 2024, Opera completed an independent audit of the no-logs policy for its free VPN with Deloitte.[1] Deloitte certified that your data is not logged or stored when using the VPN.
The blog announcing the report clarifies that Opera VPN Pro is also a no-logs service. We were previously unfamiliar with which third party runs VPN Pro, but this blog states, "VPN Pro servers are provided in collaboration with Nord, which has already been audited for its no-log policy and is a trusted VPN provider."
Opera VPN is headquartered in Norway, which is a member of the Five Eyes alliance. Following the audit of its no-logs policy, we feel better about using Opera VPN Pro and no longer consider its headquarters to be a deal breaker.
VPN protocols
Opera VPN supports OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols. However, we can no longer find the option to switch protocols.
OpenVPN is ideal for general users thanks to its perfect balance of speed and security. IKEv2 has unique reconnection capabilities, which cater to mobile users and people who travel a lot. With IKEv2, you can switch between Wi-Fi and mobile networks without dropping your VPN connection.
That said, we noted the absence of WireGuard, the fastest and most popular connection protocol.
Security features
Opera VPN Pro is a bare-bones service with an unrealistic price tag. For the price, it’s a surprise to see these missing VPN features:
- Kill switch
- Split tunneling
- Obfuscated servers
- Double VPN servers
A kill switch is an essential VPN feature that cuts your internet connection if the VPN stops working. It prevents data leaks and gives you peace of mind. We recommend Proton VPN for its internet kill switch, which prevents internet access if you’re not connected to a VPN server.
Opera VPN Pro encrypts your traffic with AES-256, a widely used encryption standard.
Opera VPN Pro test results
During our extensive testing, we checked Opera VPN Pro’s speed, privacy, and geo-unblocking potential. Take a look at our final results below.
Speed tests
- Speed test results: Opera VPN Pro decreased our download speeds by 45%.
VPN encryption will always affect your connection speed to some extent. However, it shouldn’t cause crippling speed drops where you can’t even load a page in a timely fashion or stream a movie.
After determining our baseline speed, we tested various servers around the globe to check for noticeable impacts.
| No VPN | US to US | US to CA | US to EU | US to AU | |
| Download speed | 548.18 Mbps | 449.30 Mbps | 285.01 Mbps | 224.84 Mbps | 245.68 Mbps |
| Upload speed | 330.49 Mbps | 230.78 Mbps | 393.40 Mbps | 366.25 Mbps | 236.46 Mbps |
| Latency (ping) | 16 ms | 15 ms | 48 ms | 114 ms | 204 ms |
| Download speed % difference | N/A | -18.04% | -48.01% | -58.98% | -55.18% |
| Upload speed % difference | N/A | -30.17% | +19.04% | +10.82% | -28.45% |
| Latency % difference | N/A | -6.25% | +200.00% | +612.50% | +1,175.00% |
Opera VPN Pro has previously increased our download speeds, but delivered more typical results in our latest tests. We started by connecting to the Optimal Location, which slightly decreased our download speeds but increased our ping rate.
Although the rest of our speed drops appear drastic, they are largely in line with what you should expect from a VPN. The farther a server is from your physical location, the more likely it is to slow down your speeds. That's why the U.K. and Australia servers were significantly slower than our U.S. server speeds.
Also note that Opera VPN Pro significantly increased our latency with each international server, which can cause lag with high-bandwidth activities like online gaming and video calls.
Netflix tests
- Netflix test results: Opera VPN Pro unblocked Netflix U.S., Netflix Canada, and Netflix Australia, but struggled with Netflix U.K.
Streaming Netflix with a VPN can help you unlock regional streaming content worldwide. For example, you can access Netflix U.S. from anywhere and stream the best library.
| US to US | US to CA | US to UK | US to AU | |
| Did it work with Netflix? |
After enabling Opera VPN Pro, we could stream Netflix U.S. and Canada without issue. The errors began with the Netflix U.K. library.
We selected Opera VPN Pro's East London server, but we couldn't load Netflix at all. Because Opera VPN Pro doesn't have any other U.K. servers, we couldn't troubleshoot this issue.
Then, we switched to an Australian server. Although there were no issues unblocking the geo-restrictions and streaming content, it took a while for the page to load so we could actually select the content we wanted to stream.
With Opera VPN Pro, we'd recommend nearby servers for streaming only.
DNS leak test
- DNS leak test results: Opera VPN Pro passed its DNS leak test.
DNS (Domain Name System) requests translate website names into IP addresses after you type a web address into your browser. DNS leaks can reveal your true IP address, location, and the sites you visit.
Fortunately, Opera VPN Pro didn’t show any DNS leaks during our tests.
WebRTC leak test
- WebRTC leak test results: Opera VPN Pro partially passed its WebRTC leak test.
WebRTC stands for Web Real-Time Communications. It enables real-time voice and video connections to be established through your browser. A WebRTC leak could expose your IP address to hackers or other unwanted third parties.
There were no local IP leaks with Opera VPN Pro, meaning our home IP address wasn't exposed. However, BrowserLeaks detected there was something off, so we only consider this to be a partial pass because there could be reduced anonymity.
Opera VPN Pro compatibility
| Compatibility | |
| Windows | |
| macOS | |
| Linux | |
| Android | |
| iOS | |
| Routers | |
| Browser extensions | |
| Smart devices |
Opera VPN Pro is compatible with the following operating systems:
- Windows 10+
- macOS 11+
- Android 8+
Note that iOS users still can’t install it on their devices. If you’re looking for an option for iOS, we recommend checking our list of the best VPNs for iPhone and iPad.
Opera VPN Pro customer support
| Support type | Opera VPN Pro |
| Phone | |
| Online guides or forums |
There are three ways to contact Opera VPN Pro’s customer support: the Help Center, submitting a ticket, and live chat (available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET).
The Help Center covers the usage basics and offers some troubleshooting tips. It separates the FAQ sections depending on which device you use, or you can visit the general help section.
Opera VPN Pro allows you to submit a ticket to customer support if you're having an issue. However, there's no indication of how long it will take to get a response to your ticket.
Finally, the lack of a 24/7 live chat makes it more difficult to reach customer service if you have a complicated question or need immediate support.
Opera VPN Pro user reviews
- Trustpilot rating: 1.8/5
Opera VPN Pro doesn't have an app of its own, so we went to Trustpilot to get an idea of user sentiment toward the company. We were surprised that Opera has such a low rating, labeled as poor by Trustpilot.
The most common issues reviewers cited involve the browser being slow and frequently crashing, which doesn't bode well for Opera VPN Pro.
Top alternatives
Opera VPN Pro is a decent addition to the browser, but it lacks security features and a wider server network. If Opera VPN Pro doesn’t work for you, we recommend one of these top-tier services:

Bottom line: Is Opera VPN Pro good?
Opera VPN Pro is a basic service that can hide your IP address and even improve your internet speed. It has a decent server network and the company’s logging practices have been independently audited.
However, Opera VPN Pro doesn’t have a kill switch and can expose you to data leaks. It’s also expensive for the value it offers, considering it lacks standard VPN features like split tunneling and multiple server locations per country.
Overall, we can’t recommend this VPN in its current state. It simply doesn’t offer enough to compete with the best VPNs. If you’re looking for services that can actually protect you and bypass censorship and geo-restrictions, check our recommended alternatives for some of the best VPNs.

FAQs
Is Opera VPN Pro any good?
Opera VPN may be a good choice if you frequently use the Opera or Opera GX browser. It's a no-frills VPN that only encrypts your traffic and masks your IP address.
It's not a great option if you never use Opera, prioritize streaming, or want extra security features to protect your data.
Is Opera VPN Pro free?
The Opera browser has a free built-in VPN. However, it's extremely limited, as you can only use servers in three locations. It also protects only the Opera browser.
You can upgrade to Opera VPN Pro, which protects all traffic on your device and offers more server options.
How do I enable the VPN on Opera?
You can enable the VPN on Opera by going to your Account Settings (on mobile, it's the profile icon on the bottom right; on a desktop, it's the profile icon on the bottom left) and clicking on the VPN icon to enable it.
Is Opera VPN Pro safe?
Opera VPN Pro can hide your IP address and encrypt your traffic; it has an audited no-logs policy and we didn’t experience any data leaks during our tests.
However, its lack of a reliable kill switch can cause data leaks. We can’t call a VPN service safe without this essential feature.
