Proton Pass Review 2026: A Robust Password Manager from a Digital Privacy Leader

Proton Pass, offered by the digital security company behind Proton VPN, rivals our other top-tested password managers, but with one notable drawback. Here's what we found.

Proton Pass is another solid security product from a brand we regularly recommend to our readers. We found it intuitive and aesthetically pleasing, with broad compatibility and functionality.

Proton Pass works best when you use the paid plan, but the free plan also has its merits. We liked the unlimited password storage feature of the free plan, but felt that upgrading was necessary so we could enable two-factor authentication and password sharing.

There are several plan options as well as other features you may want to consider. Keep reading to find out all the details about this password manager, including what we thought it did well and what could be improved.

How we test and rate password managers

We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.

By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full testing methodology here.

Our experience

Proton Pass is a user-friendly password manager. The web-based portal functioned seamlessly, and navigation was intuitive.

The free version is comprehensive and offers a lot. We liked that it allowed for unlimited password storage. Some competitors limit the number of passwords stored in their free product, but Proton Pass doesn’t.

However, when we used the free version, we couldn't access identities or store addresses, phone numbers, etc. Once we upgraded, we gained access to these features, along with the ability to save documents and files associated with our identities.

List of items you can add to your Proton Pass vault

We tested Proton Pass’ autofill capabilities by visiting account login pages and account creation pages. Proton Pass easily logged us in to Bitdefender since we had saved credentials.

However, it struggled to fill out our information on the account creation pages because the First Name and Last Name were separate. You can only save your full name in a Proton Pass identity entry.

Overall, Proton Pass does exactly what it says it will do. It was easy to use and became even easier once we upgraded to the paid tier.

While you could get away with just using the free version, we think the paid tier is the best bet. You’ll be able to share passwords, save more than just login credentials, and have access to Proton Sentinel, an AI-based security system that protects you from potential hackers.

Proton Pass prices and plans

Proton Pass offers a robust free product, along with paid tiers starting at $2.99/mo.The free plan allows unlimited passwords, but it doesn’t enable you to save personal information, which means you can't autofill forms.

The Pass Plus plan offers autofill options, the ability to share passwords, and unlimited email aliases. Pass Family includes everything in Pass Plus and supports up to six users, each with their own profile.

Finally, Proton Unlimited combines the Proton Pass features with its proprietary apps Mail, VPN, Calendar, Wallet, and Drive, and provides cloud storage.

*Proton Duo offers unlimited coverage for two people.
This plan is available as an upgrade on the Proton Pass dashboard.

While the free plan allows you to save unlimited passwords, we believe the best value is the Pass Plus plan. It allows you to share passwords, which is something you’ll find yourself doing more than you think. It also has the option to save your personal information for easy form filling across the internet.

Plus, you’ll get additional security features, such as 2FA and Proton Sentinel, with the Plus plan, which are not included with the free plan. We review a lot of password managers and think these extras are worth the price of the subscription.

Families have the ability to sign up for the Family plan, which allows access for up to six people. IIn contrast, the Proton Unlimited plan includes up to two separate profiles, but only if you opt for Unlimited Duo.

The Family plan is similar to the Plus plan, with the added room for multiple people. The Ultimate plan includes cloud storage and access to Proton’s other products.

Proton Pass is a good choice if you’re looking for a reputable cybersecurity bundle with a password manager, Cloud storage, mail agent, VPN, and more.

Proton Pass includes a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can upgrade from your free plan and try out all the additional features.

Proton Pass features

Proton Pass includes the major features a good password manager should have, including password storage, email aliases, the ability to save your identity with additional documents attached, a password generator, and password sharing.

We appreciate the addition of Proton Sentinel, an AI-based security feature that combines AI and human analysis to ensure your accounts are secure from potential hackers. Below, we outline more about each of the features.

Importing and exporting passwords

When we signed up for Proton Pass, we had the option to select our current password manager and import our passwords. All of the major password managers and browsers were included.

Proton did walk us through how to save our Password data as a CSV to import, which was easy. Exporting can be done as a CSV or JSON file.

Password sharing

Passwords can be shared by email with other Proton Pass users or via a link. We couldn’t share passwords on the free plan, but it's available to paid users.

Proton Pass entry with share options window open

We had no issue accessing shared passwords from our phone when we sent it. This helps you share strong passwords without worrying about miscommunication.

Password generator

The password generator is accessible when you create a new account or when you want to change your password. When we accessed a Proton Mail account, we saw a settings option that allowed us to customize the password. If you don’t like the suggested strong option, you can adjust it to fit your needs.

Autofill and form filler

The form filler option was only available to us once we upgraded to a paid plan, but we could create multiple identities. This works well if you need different information for work, your personal accounts, your kids, and more.

We also appreciated the option to attach additional files to each identity.

Password strength report

The Pass Monitor tab on the main dashboard is where you can find your password strength report. The Pass Monitor flags reused passwords, weak passwords, and entries with inactive two-factor authentication (2FA).

Proton Pass Pass Monitor (password strength report)

We created a password entry with the password "password" and saved it in our vault. Pass Monitor immediately flagged this entry and prompted us to change it.

Digital legacy

Proton Pass now includes an emergency access feature. You can find this by selecting Settings > Account > Recovery, then scrolling down to the Emergency Access section.

Bonus features

Proton Sentinel is an included bonus feature that uses AI to analyze password and login behavior. Combined with human analysis, this feature is designed to help prevent hackers from accessing your accounts.

Proton Pass also includes free dark web monitoring. However, this feature is currently limited to Proton Mail users.

Proton Pass privacy policy

Proton Pass adheres to the overall Proton privacy policy, which is pretty good. It notes that your information will only be shared if the Swiss government serves Proton with formal legal paperwork demanding your data.

Proton Pass third-party audits

The last audit of the software was conducted by Cure53 in 2023. We read through the report, and the overall reception was positive. Cure53 did note some areas for improvement, but without an additional security audit, we can’t be sure they were corrected.

Is Proton Pass safe to use?

Proton Pass is part of the larger Proton Security family, a software company we have found to be secure and worthwhile. Proton VPN is one of the highest-rated VPNs we’ve tested. Proton Pass adheres to the same standards, and we feel confident recommending it.

While no software is infallible, Proton Pass clearly operates with strong ethical standards and produces high-quality software.

Two-factor authentication

Yes, you can to set up 2FA, a passwordless authentication, with paid Proton accounts. Proton uses an authenticator app to secure 2FA on your account. There’s also the option to add a second password to your account, like you can do with Proton Mail, to double-verify your credentials.

Proton Pass compatibility

Proton Pass is compatible with the following operating systems and browsers:

Operating systems:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Chromebooks

Browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Edge
  • Safari
  • Brave

Proton Pass customer service

Customer support was one area we found to be a little lacking with Proton Pass. The only real options are to use the online guides or contact a support agent via an online submission form.

We would like to see a live chat option. A strong alternative would be an AI chatbot that can quickly scan the online guides and point users toward the correct answer.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for within the online guides, you’ll need to reach out to the support team via the website. While this isn’t an ideal solution, at least you have the option to get in touch with someone.

Proton Pass FAQs

Is Proton Pass better than Bitwarden?

We actually think Proton Pass is on par with Bitwarden. You don’t have to do anything extra to share passwords, whereas Bitwarden requires you to group passwords in organizations. However, Bitwarden offers a digital heir or emergency contact, whereas Proton Pass has none. As far as functionality, they are both quality password managers.

Is Proton Pass better than LastPass?

Yes, Proton Pass has never been breached, which gives it an edge over LastPass. We’ve used both and found Proton Pass to have a more user-friendly design and easy-to-find features.

What is the vulnerability of Proton Pass?

Proton Pass has a vulnerability issue with its memory management system. Hackers could potentially exploit this to extract unencrypted data from memory. Although this has not yet occurred, it is an issue we hope the developers are actively addressing.

Bottom line: Is Proton Pass good?

Yes, we found Proton Pass to be a good password management system that’s easy to use. Although we experienced some minor configuration issues initially, once the system was up and running, we found it to be seamless. There are other password managers we’ve used that are good but glitchy, but this wasn’t one of them.

We regularly recommend Proton VPN, made by the same company, and have found Proton Pass to be a quality product as well. We love a good security bundle, so having a password management option that integrates with the rest of Proton’s security is a significant plus.

Still, if Proton Pass doesn’t have the features you desire, we have reviewed all of the best password managers available. We’re sure that one of them will have what you need to keep your accounts secure and protected.
