How we test and rate password managers
We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.
By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

NordPass pros and cons
NordPass is a password manager from the makers of NordVPN. It offers all the features and functions you’d expect from a password manager, like autofill, password sharing, and easy syncing between devices. It also includes a password generator to help create strong passwords.
NordPass pricing starts at just $1.39/mo (billed every two years), which is extremely reasonable. There is also an entirely free tier available. Although it’s limited in features, it makes for a great way to try out the service to see if it’s right for you.
NordPass’s feature set, solid security, and affordable pricing make it our pick for the best overall password manager. For most users, this is the way to go.
- Trusted brand in the privacy space
- Excellent encryption and security
- Free version available
- Large feature set beyond the basics
- Support for a wide range of browsers
- Cloud storage is limited
- Free tier is limited to one device
Aura Password Manager pros and cons
Aura Password Manager is part of the larger Aura Identity Protection suite, but it’s also available as a separate (and much more affordable) subscription service. The password manager offers a solid feature set, an easy-to-use dashboard, and decent compatibility, although we’d like to see support for more browsers.
Even when buying Aura Password Manager separately, users get access to the service’s VPN and antivirus tools, which make it an exceptional value. Prices start at $1.99/mo (first yr only) billed annually.
We like Aura for users who want an all-in-one solution. The larger Aura suite offers an impressive array of tools to keep your private data secure and private, including credit monitoring, identity theft protection, and more.
- Lots of extras included in the service
- Clean, easy-to-use dashboard
- Excellent cross-platform syncing
- Limited transparency on audits
- No digital legacy options
- Limited browser support
Which password manager is the better value?
NordPass is a slightly better value for most people, thanks to its lower price and the option to use the free tier. However, Aura isn’t much more expensive and comes with some useful extras, such as the user-friendly VPN.

NordPass plans
NordPass offers a limited free tier, and then two paid plans: Premium and Family. The two plans are identical apart from the number of users (one for Premium and six for Family). Each plan has the full password manager plus password health analyzer, data breach scanner, email masking, and more.
Aura Password Manager plans
Aura offers three plans, all of which automatically include antivirus software and a VPN: Value, Deluxe, and Ultimate. Value lets you use the password manager on three devices, while Ultimate brings that up to 10, plus adds premium identity protection, financial fraud protection, ad blocking features, and more.
The Deluxe plan, which includes Aura Ad Blocker, a sensitive files vault, and identity theft protection (sans insurance), is probably the best option for most users.
Which password manager has the better features?
NordPass has a slightly more robust feature set as a password manager. However, Aura comes with a VPN and antivirus, which we think is likely to be more useful for many.

Technically, NordPass is a more robust password manager. It allows access on an unlimited number of devices and includes a digital legacy feature, which enables you to unlock your password vault for designated people after your death. Now, whether these features are actually valuable will vary wildly from person to person.
You can use Aura Password Manager on a maximum of 10 devices with the Ultimate plan, which is probably more than enough for most users. Although it lacks the digital legacy function, Aura Password Manager compensates with a VPN and antivirus protection included in the lowest-tier plan, which many might find more useful.
Ultimately, if all you need is a password manager, NordPass is the way to go. But for most people, we think Aura’s VPN and real-time antivirus protection are likely to be more useful than NordPass’s extra features.
Which password manager is safer?
We feel NordPass is safer due to its slightly more advanced encryption algorithm. However, we think both options are more than secure enough for the vast majority of users.

NordPass employs the XChaCha20 encryption algorithm, while Aura uses the standard AES-256. Both are considered highly secure, but NordPass claims XChaCha20 is the more advanced algorithm. We doubt that anyone will actually notice a difference in their day-to-day use, but it’s worth pointing out.
Both platforms feature password hashing, where passwords are converted into a string of characters, making it impossible to retrieve the original password. NordPass discloses the hashing function it uses, while Aura doesn’t. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though some users may appreciate the transparency.
Neither provider has suffered a data breach — at least not one that’s been publicly disclosed. In theory, all hackers would find that if they breached these services, the passwords would be unreadable. Still, it’s reassuring to know that there have been no known breaches.
Which password manager has better compatibility and customer support?
NordPass offers compatibility with more browsers and platforms than Aura. However, Aura offers phone support, and NordPass does not.

Both NordPass and Aura offer clean, easy-to-use interfaces — we think most users will be fine with either.
NordPass does have better compatibility, working with more browsers and offering native apps for Windows and Mac. Aura offers extensions compatible with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, but users on desktops must rely on the web interface.
As for customer support, the two are fairly similar, with an online help center and chat option. However, Aura offers phone support, which is important for some users. If that’s you, this might be a reason to go with Aura. Both offer 24/7 support.
Top alternatives
Both NordPass and Aura are two of our top picks for password management solutions. But if they don’t quite do it for you, there are other very solid options. For value, we like RoboForm, which starts at just $0.99/mo (billed annually). For maximum security, Keeper is an excellent option, though it’s a bit more expensive.
