How we test and rate password managers
We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.
By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

Keeper: Best for security
Who it’s best for
- If you’re concerned about security, Keeper is one of the best password managers you can choose; it has comparable features and even more customization options than NordPass.
Similar to NordPass, Keeper has you enable biometric authentication, which uses your own unique FaceID or fingerprints, to login to your account. Keeper also provides cloud storage built into its platform, while NordPass requires another service, NordLocker, if you want to store additional data.
What we liked
Keeper, like NordPass, uses biometric authentication, like FaceID or a thumbprint, which is unique to you and requires no additional login credentials. We love biometrics because they make logins much easier and safer. A secure password manager needs to be effortless, or you won’t want to use it.
Keeper is the only password manager on this list that includes comprehensive, end-to-end encrypted cloud storage in the app itself.
NordPass makes you sign up for an additional paid service, NordLocker, if you want to store documents, images, and other information in its cloud. Dashlane, which lets you store notes, has a limit on how many characters the document can have. Other password managers have cloud storage, but with Keeper, you get the added bonus of its security.
What we didn’t like
Keeper prides itself on its security, which is why we were a little bummed that the dark web monitoring isn’t included in the subscriptions. Keeper does offer a free dark web scan, but you’d have to purchase BreachWatch as an add-on to your Keeper security. Some premium password managers offer certain features only with paid plans, but dark web monitoring is one we find essential.
1Password: Best for new users
Who it’s best for
- 1Password has a simple, clean interface that even novice internet users can use.
It can be difficult to adjust to using a lot of new software to stay secure, but 1Password’s straightforward interface and design should put you at ease. Everything is labeled with bright, aesthetically pleasing designs and organized so you can find your data quickly.
What we liked
NordPass is part of the Nord Security family along with NordVPN and NordLocker, so it can be challenging to navigate. 1Password, however, just feels more user-friendly. It organizes all your data with a bright, color-coded design that does not feel childish. If you’re nervous about adopting new software into your routine, this setup should put you at ease.
On top of all that simplicity, you get extra features like Travel Mode and Watchtower. Travel Mode will actually remove your vaults from your device when you’re traveling. That way, if your phone is lost or stolen, these credentials will still be protected no matter what. Watchtower provides dark web monitoring, which helps you check for leaked data online and gives you action items on how to secure your information.
What we didn’t like
1Password has a weird pricing structure, and there’s no free version. You get 14 days free to trial the software, but then you have to pay for an entire year upfront. The company doesn’t issue refunds, so your 2-week trial is the only chance to evaluate it. If you end up not liking 1Password, you won’t be able to get your money back.
Aura Password Manager: Best security bundle
Who it’s best for
- Aura is best for individuals or families who need complete online protection at an affordable price.
Aura goes beyond dedicated password vaults to offer a complete suite of security software and tools for ultimate online protection.
What we liked
Aura packs a lot of protection in its password management plans. Value, the lowest-tier, boasts real-time antivirus software, a user-friendly VPN, data breach alerts, and scam and phishing protection. The Deluxe plan adds an ad blocker, a sensitive files vault, and identity theft protection. The Ultimate plan goes beyond to include 3-bureau credit monitoring and identity theft insurance of up to $1 million per adult.
We've tested all of Aura's security tools and were pleasantly surprised by the overall performance of each. Although dedicated software tends to include more robust features, Aura proved its mettle during our in-house testing. Learn more about Aura's advanced security offerings:
What we didn’t like
Aura Password Manager includes a lot of extras, but as a password management solution, it lacks essential features. Dedicated password vaults usually offer digital legacy (AKA emergency access), passkeys, and form-filling. We also found Aura's plans to be confusing overall. Aura offers various security bundles for identity theft protection, parental controls, and password management, with distinct features and pricing that do not overlap.

Dashlane: Best for groups
Who it’s best for
- Dashlane offers the most user accounts, making it a good choice for groups or large families that may need to accommodate many people.
Dashlane allows you to add up to 10 users, the most of any of the password managers on this list. Whether you have a close-knit network of friends, a small business that isn’t at enterprise-level pricing, or a large household, you can accommodate all the people you need with Dashlane.
What we liked
Similar to NordPass, Dashlane offers advanced features and broad compatibility. We love that your Dashlane account includes a subscription to HotSpot Shield VPN. Dashlane also includes other security features like phishing alerts and dark web monitoring.
Dashlane users will also enjoy the ability to store up to 1 GB with the Secure Notes feature. If you have a small business and want employees to leave each other information in an encrypted environment, the notes feature allows that to happen.
What we didn’t like
While Dashlane might be a good choice for groups, you can’t perform secure password sharing unless the recipient has a Dashlane account, too. If you have a family member, team member, or friend who isn’t a member, they can’t receive the shared password. Additionally, Dashlane recently retired its free plan, which means password sharing is more cumbersome for individuals without a paid Dashlane subscription.
FAQs
What are the negatives of NordPass?
We like NordPass, but the free version has some downsides. NordPass Free has limited features, including the inability to share passwords. There’s also no digital legacy option or dark web monitoring with the free version. However, the free password manager option does include a 30-day free trial of NordPass Premium, which offers all the advanced security features.
Does NordPass work with apps?
Yes, the NordPass app works with apps on both Android and iPhone. The process of saving your app credentials may vary depending on your device, but it should be automatic. If your NordPass doesn’t automatically save app credentials, NordPass provides instructions on how to save information manually.
Which is better, NordPass or Bitwarden?
While we found that Bitwarden is a little less expensive and has broad compatibility, NordPass was better overall. It’s easier to share passwords on NordPass, and the option to bundle with Nord’s other products, like NordVPN, means you’ll only need one dashboard for multiple services.
Has NordPass been breached?
No, NordPass has never experienced a breach.
Which are the most secure password managers?
NordPass, Keeper, 1Password, Aura Password Manager, Dashlane, and Bitdefender are some of the most secure password managers available. We suggest trying the free version, if applicable, or activating a free trial to see which one works best for you.
Bottom line: The best NordPass alternatives
Keeper, 1Password, Aura Password Manager, and Dashlane are the best NordPass alternatives for password and online security. Keeper offers excellent security options, including biometric login and unlimited document storage in the cloud. 1Password’s interface is easy to use, even for people new to password managers. Aura offers more than just a password vault with its budget-friendly online security suite. And Dashlane allows you to add up to 10 users to your account, making it easier to coordinate with groups.
Weak or insecure passwords are a huge contributor to the data breach and hacking epidemic, which can lead to scams, spam, ransomware, and even identity theft. Premium password management makes creating, storing, and using strong passwords easy. If you want true set-and-forget convenience, a premium password manager is the way to go.
