How we test and rate ad blockers

Every ad blocker in this guide is hands-on tested by our team using a consistent process. We evaluate each product across six areas:

  • Test results (34%): We run each ad blocker through AdBlock Tester and Can You Block It, recording scores for each. We also browse ad-heavy sites in real-world conditions, including watching YouTube videos and visiting Forbes, to verify day-to-day performance.
  • Value (21%): We evaluate each product's cost relative to its blocking performance, factoring in starting price, money-back guarantee length, and the number of devices covered under a single subscription.
  • Features (18%): We test each ad blocker against a six-point checklist covering its ability to block pop-up ads, trackers, YouTube ads, banner ads, and push ads, as well as whether it includes whitelisting functionality.
  • Editor's score (15%): We use each product ourselves across supported platforms, evaluating how intuitive the interface is and anything else that affects day-to-day use that isn't captured by our other criteria.
  • Customer support (7%): We evaluate the support options available, prioritizing human support options like live chat and email.
  • Compatibility (5%): We review each ad blocker's compatibility across desktop apps, browser extensions, and mobile apps to determine how broad its device and platform coverage is.

We test all ad blockers at least twice a year to ensure our recommendations stay current. We test across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS so our results reflect real-world performance on the devices most readers actually use.

Who it’s best for

Total Adblock is a great choice for anyone who wants a high-performing ad blocker that works on mobile as well as desktop, paired with reliable antivirus protection at a very competitive price.

What we liked

Strong ad-blocking performance: The software blocked ads across all devices, including mobile phones. The dashboard clearly shows what is being blocked on each site through a convenient drop-down widget, including YouTube video ads. In our tests, it skipped video ads entirely and went straight to the content.

Blocks trackers: Total Adblock prevents tracking scripts from collecting your browsing data, helping protect your privacy and reducing targeted advertising.

What we didn’t like

Free tier is limited: Even though it’s robust, Total Adblock’s free tier doesn’t block all types of ads, and it doesn’t work on the top 15,000 websites. Total Adblock encourages you to upgrade, especially to a bundle that includes TotalVPN, but we’ve found that service to be lacking compared to other VPNs. Still, at least you have the option to bundle, whereas Adblock Plus doesn’t offer those services.

  • Works seamlessly on macOS, iOS, and Safari
  • Offers lots of features, including regional filters, a firewall, custom filters, and more
  • Free version also proved to be highly effective
  • Can disrupt the appearance/functionality of sites, emails, and apps

Who it’s best for

If you’re looking for software made exclusively for Apple products, 1Blocker is tailored specifically for these operating systems. Since it’s made for macOS and iOS, it can cope with the unique challenges of blocking ads, trackers, and other malicious and annoying executables on Apple’s OS.

What we liked

Adds a firewall: Both Adblock Plus and 1Blocker work on Safari browsers, but 1Blocker takes it a step further, adding a firewall to your macOS or iOS device.

Stops trackers and ads: 1Blocker also has specific blocking capabilities. We’ve found it’s useful at stopping trackers, something Adblock Plus doesn’t do well. It can also block advertising, cookie consent pop-ups, comment sections, widgets, adult sites, and more.

Free option: 1Blocker has a free option that allows you to choose one of its features at a time. If you choose to pay for the full version, you’ll have access to all of the features simultaneously.

Lifetime subscription: 1Blocker includes a lifetime subscription, which means you pay one time, and you can use it forever without having to purchase an upgrade.

What we didn’t like

Firewall glitches: 1Blocker’s firewall can interfere with the appearance of emails and websites, and we ended up disabling it for normal everyday use. If there were an easy toggle option that didn’t require going into the app for the firewall, we’d probably use it more often.

But for now, we turn it on only when we’re using shared Wi-Fi, like at a hotel or coffee shop.
