Total Adblock pros and cons

Total Adblock is a simple ad blocker for people who want an extension that starts blocking ads, trackers, and cookies after installation. The premium plan includes antivirus software that can block malicious sites, malware, and phishing attempts.

You need the premium plan for Total Adblock's full ad-blocking coverage. Some free ad blockers may provide broader coverage, so Total Adblock is best suited to people willing to pay for premium.

Pros
  • Simple interface, easy to navigate
  • Top ad and tracker blocking scores
  • Offers mobile support
  • Premium plan includes antivirus protection
Cons
  • Free version excludes ads on top 15,000 websites
  • Occasional prompts to upgrade to premium

uBlock Origin pros and cons

uBlock Origin is a free, open-source ad blocker with detailed filter controls. It effectively blocks ads, trackers, and cookies across Firefox, Edge, and Opera browsers. There are some downsides, though. To get the most from uBlock Origin, we had to adjust its settings. Its open-source code lets anyone inspect and contribute to the extension, but its filter settings may feel complicated for new users.

uBlock Origin doesn't support Chrome's Manifest V3 extension framework, and it is not available for Safari. uBlock Origin Lite is a Manifest V3-compatible alternative for Chrome, but its filtering capabilities are more limited. We found that uBlock Origin Lite works well, but we prefer an extension with stronger third-party tracker blocking.

Manifest V3 is Google's newer set of rules for Chrome extensions. It limits how much ad and tracker blockers can filter, which is why uBlock Origin no longer works fully on Chrome and other browsers that run on Chromium, like Microsoft Edge.

Pros
  • Completely free and open-source
  • Low impact on system resources
  • Highly customizable
Cons
  • Requires more technical knowledge to fully utilize
  • No longer supported on Chrome, Edge, or Safari (must use uBlock Lite)

Total Adblock has a free version and a paid subscription. Total Adblock Free blocks ads, trackers, and malicious websites, but only blocks ads on a limited number of websites.

Total Adblock Premium starts at $1.59/mo, which increases to $8.25/mo after the first year. To test Total Adblock, you can take advantage of its seven-day free trial and 30-day money-back guarantee.

The paid subscription blocks unlimited ads as well as unwanted browser notifications. This subscription also adds TotalAV antivirus protection and PC Tune-Up tools, hence the high markup after the first year. That price hike is normal for comprehensive antivirus coverage.

In contrast, uBlock Origin is a completely free extension that appeals to those who prefer a more hands-on approach.

Total Adblock boasts extensive compatibility across mobile, including iOS and Android. This makes it a great option for users who value a consistent ad-blocking experience across all their devices.

uBlock Origin used to support all major browsers, but it's no longer available on Google Chrome. Following the launch of Manifest v3, uBlock Origin has been gradually taken down because it's no longer compliant with Chrome's standards. Microsoft is following suit, so soon it will no longer be available on Microsoft Edge as well.

To use uBlock Origin on Chrome, you'll have to swap browsers or use uBlock Origin Lite instead. This was created to comply with Chrome's standards, but it's not as powerful as the regular uBlock Origin.

uBlock Origin also lacks mobile compatibility, which is limiting if you want to block ads on your phone.

Total Adblock offers live customer support, which can be crucial for those who may require assistance. You can contact an agent via email, phone, or live chat (although it can be difficult to find these contact methods). You can also review its online guides.

uBlock Origin provides community support through GitHub and a subreddit, where you can post questions. Response times may vary.

Winner: Total Adblock. It comes out ahead for its broader compatibility and customer support options.

Total Adblock and uBlock Origin alternatives

We recommend Total Adblock for its user-friendly interface, high ad and tracker blocking rates, and support for major browsers and smartphones. But if you're still weighing your options, you might consider other ad blockers like Surfshark CleanWeb, which combines VPN and ad-blocking functionality, or Aura, which provides robust identity theft protection.

Total Adblock vs. uBlock Origin FAQs

Is uBlock Origin better than Total Adblock?

uBlock Origin could be a better fit if you want extensive filter controls and a free, open-source tool, while Total Adblock may suit you better if you prefer a simpler setup and mobile support.

Is Total Adblock free forever?

Total Adblock has a free forever ad blocker with limited capabilities. Its full features are available through a paid subscription.

The initial Total Adblock download automatically allows you to experience the Premium plan for seven days before downgrading to the limited free version. After that, pop-ups prompt you to purchase the premium version.

What's the best free ad blocker?

uBlock Origin is a free ad blocker that blocks ads and gives users granular control over filtering settings.

What’s the most powerful ad blocker?

For users who want granular control over filtering, uBlock Origin could be a strong choice because it provides extensive filtering and customization options.

Is Total Adblock worth it?

Total Adblock is worth it if you want a set-and-forget ad blocker with mobile support. Its free version only blocks ads on a limited list of sites, so most users will need the premium plan for full ad and tracker blocking. That premium tier costs more than free tools like uBlock Origin, but the mobile apps and antivirus bundle are the trade-off.

What's a good Total Adblock alternative?

For a free alternative to Total Adblock, uBlock Origin offers similar ad-blocking power without a subscription, though it's no longer available on Chrome or Microsoft Edge. For an all-in-one option, Surfshark CleanWeb pairs ad blocking with VPN protection, and Aura Ad Blocker adds identity theft monitoring alongside ad blocking.
