What is a residential proxy?

A residential proxy is a home internet connection that someone else routes their traffic through. To the website receiving that traffic, the activity appears to come from an ordinary household rather than a data center.

The household device becomes an exit node, meaning it is the final stop before the traffic reaches the wider internet. If attackers control compromised devices together for attacks or other malicious activity, they can form a network of hijacked devices, AKA a botnet.

Residential IP addresses can attract less scrutiny than data-center addresses, making them useful for scraping websites, evading location restrictions, creating fake accounts, and committing fraud.

The direction of the traffic is the clearest difference between a residential proxy and a virtual private network (VPN). With a conventional VPN, your traffic passes through the VPN provider’s servers. With a residential proxy, somebody else’s traffic passes through your device. Some companies use terms such as “residential VPN,” but that label does not change whose connection ultimately carries the traffic.

Using a VPN can help reduce your exposure to some DDoS attacks by masking your real IP address, though it won't stop your device from being recruited into a botnet through malware or a proxy SDK.

Cheap streaming boxes

Some inexpensive Android streaming boxes and other smart devices arrive with a backdoor already installed. Nokia described how a $30 streaming box could join a proxy network as soon as its owner plugs it in.

The FBI specifically warns consumers to avoid streaming devices promising free access to sports, TV shows, and movies.

Pirated software and apps

Cracked games, unofficial movie apps, torrented files, and sideloaded installers can contain malware that quietly turns a device into a proxy. The app may appear to work normally while the malicious software runs in the background.

This risk reaches a large audience. In an April 2026 All About Cookies survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, 46% of VPN users said they used a free service. Meanwhile, 56% of respondents did not know that many free VPNs may fund themselves by logging and selling user information.

Your connection is valuable because websites are less likely to block an ordinary U.S. household IP address than one associated with a foreign server farm.

According to Nokia, customers may pay up to $95 to lease a fresh U.S. residential IP address for two weeks. An Eastern European IP may fetch about 30 cents for the same period. In other words, someone can turn your internet connection into inventory and resell access to it.

Nokia also cited estimates that the residential proxy market has grown from less than $100 million five years ago to between $2 billion and $3 billion. The company said demand is being driven largely by AI businesses using residential connections to gather training data while getting around platform controls.

How to check your devices and protect your home network

Most households do not need advanced cybersecurity tools to reduce their exposure. A few basic checks can help you spot questionable devices and avoid adding new ones.

  • Avoid offers that sound too generous. The FBI recommends avoiding streaming boxes and apps that promise free sports, TV, or movies. Download apps from official stores, and avoid pirated software and pop-up ads on unfamiliar websites.
  • Research free VPNs before installing them. Check who operates the service, how it earns money, and whether its privacy policy says it shares your bandwidth or enrolls devices in a proxy network.   • Review your connected devices. Open your router’s app or administration page and check the list of phones, TVs, boxes, cameras, and other devices using your network. Investigate unfamiliar entries. Unexplained slowdowns or unusually high upload activity can also be warning signs, though neither proves you're on a proxy network.
  • Install updates. Keep your router, operating systems, apps, and smart-device firmware up to date. Updates can close security flaws that attackers use to compromise devices.
  • Disconnect suspicious hardware. Unplug a questionable streaming box, scan affected devices with trusted antivirus software, and remove unfamiliar apps. The FBI warns that a factory reset may not eliminate malware installed before a device was sold. Replacing the hardware may be safer if suspicious activity continues.
