How we test and rate password managers

Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 30+ password managers. We install each product on our own devices and test it across both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well it handles saving, filling, and syncing credentials across real-world situations.

We evaluate each product across five areas:

  • Editor's score (15%): We factor in our own assessment of the user experience, onboarding, and anything else not captured by the other criteria.
  • Value (15%): We compare the lowest and highest plan prices and free trial length, assess how many users a subscription can cover, and check whether a free version is available.
  • Features (35%): We test the core functionality every password manager needs: autofill, cross-device sync, and password generation. We also evaluate sharing tools, import support, digital legacy options, password strength reporting, and passkey support.
  • Compatibility (10%): We assess availability across desktop apps, mobile apps, and browser extensions.
  • Trustworthiness (25%): We review each product's Trustpilot rating and assess overall trustworthiness, including encryption standards, audit history, and whether the privacy policy confirms user data is never sold.

1Password vs. RoboForm: Key differences

  • Price: RoboForm starts at $0.99/mo compared to 1Password's $2.99/mo, making it the most affordable premium alternative in our lineup without sacrificing core security features.
  • Commitment: 1Password requires a full-year subscription upfront with no refund option after the 14-day trial. RoboForm doesn't lock you into the same rigid commitment model.
  • Interface: 1Password has a more polished, modern vault design. RoboForm's interface is more utilitarian, though it's highly functional and easy to navigate once you're familiar with it.
  • Form filling: RoboForm was originally built around form-filling and still leads the field in autofill accuracy across complex web forms — an area where 1Password is solid but not as specialized.

What we liked

Users who want a simpler, more budget-conscious alternative to 1Password. Starting at just $0.99/mo, RoboForm provides premium password management for individuals and families without sacrificing security or functionality.

RoboForm uses AES-256 encryption with a zero-knowledge architecture, meaning only you can access your data. It also supports two-factor authentication (2FA), biometric logins, and emergency access, which serves as a valuable safety net and mirrors 1Password's trusted digital legacy feature.

During testing, we found RoboForm's autofill accuracy and cross-platform compatibility impressive. It worked seamlessly across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and all major browsers. The intuitive import tool made migrating from 1Password fast and frustration-free, preserving both credentials and folder structures.

We also appreciated RoboForm's secure password sharing and local storage options, which offer greater flexibility for users who prefer to control their own data rather than store everything in the cloud.

Roboform Windows app dashboard

What we didn't like

RoboForm's design feels more old-school than 1Password's polished interface, and it lacks the elegant vault organization that makes 1Password so user-friendly. The free plan is single-device only, so multi-device users will need to upgrade. Even so, with its security, versatility, and unbeatable pricing, RoboForm is a strong, lower-cost alternative to 1Password.

Star rating summary

RoboForm has a high star rating of 4.9 due to its comprehensive features, economical pricing, and extensive compatibility across operating systems and browser extensions.

RoboForm received a lower score in the value category because the free plan only covers one device and a lower score in the trust category due to its ratings on Trustpilot.

  • Premium plan adds data breach alerts, email masking, and emergency account access for a trusted contact
  • Included in Nord's Plus bundle alongside NordVPN, anti-malware, and an ad blocker

1Password vs. NordPass: Key differences

  • Encryption: NordPass uses XChaCha20, considered more resistant to future quantum computing threats than 1Password's AES-GCM-256. This is a meaningful distinction for security-focused users planning for the long term.
  • Price: NordPass paid plans start at a lower price than 1Password's $2.99/mo, and a free tier is available for users not ready to commit to a subscription.
  • Support: NordPass includes 24/7 live chat support. 1Password limits users to email, community forums, and social media.
  • Ecosystem: NordPass is part of Nord Security's broader suite — the Plus bundle pairs it with NordVPN, anti-malware, and an ad blocker, which is a strong value add if you already use Nord products.

Want a full breakdown? Read our NordPass vs. 1Password comparison.

What we liked

Users who like 1Password's security, including two-factor authentication and strong encryption, will find even more security with NordPass. NordPass uses multi-factor authentication with different authentication methods, including biometrics.

When comparing NordPass and 1Password, we found that NordPass had a few advantages. It starts at a lower price point, which makes its paid plans affordable for nearly every budget. NordPass also includes 24/7 support via chat, while 1Password's support options were limited to email, community forums, a help center, and social media.

When it comes to security, NordPass uses xChaCha20 as its encryption algorithm because it is considered safer in the long run. 1Password's AES-256-bit encryption is extremely secure, but with advances in quantum computing, AES is already showing signs of becoming vulnerable. NordPass decided to avoid that potential pitfall and use different encryption methods to ensure its longevity and protection.

NordPass dashboard
Looking at passwords in NordPass

What we didn't like

NordPass does offer a free plan, unlike 1Password, but it's limited. You'll get core functions like a biometric login and a password generator for creating strong passwords, but more advanced security features are limited to paid plans. If you're on a budget and looking for a robust, free password manager, NordPass might not be it.

Star rating summary

NordPass is our top password manager recommendation with a near-perfect star rating of 4.9. It's easy to use, affordable, and offers all the features you need for simple and secure password management.

NordPass was docked only in the trust category because of its 4.0 Trustpilot score.

  • Zero-trust and zero-knowledge encryption, so only you can access your data
  • Completes annual third-party audits to ensure your information stays as safe as possible

1Password vs. Keeper: Key differences

  • Customization: Keeper lets you create custom fields and record types beyond 1Password's fixed categories, giving power users more flexibility to organize and store sensitive data.
  • Dark web monitoring: 1Password's Watchtower is included across all plans. Keeper's equivalent — BreachWatch — is a paid add-on, which stands out as a gap given how strong the rest of Keeper's security feature set is.
  • Storage: Keeper includes 10GB of secure file storage on family plans. 1Password includes no cloud storage.
  • Biometric login: Both support biometric access, but Keeper's FaceID and fingerprint integration work across its fully customizable dashboard, making it feel more cohesive for users who rely on it daily.

Want a full breakdown? Read our Keeper vs. 1Password comparison.

What we liked

If you like that 1Password feels customizable because of the many data categories you can store, Keeper may be the perfect alternative. Keeper allows you to create custom fields that populate on websites, automatically filling in your information.

Keeper's customizable dashboard is helpful and can feel similar to 1Password's expanded dashboard, which protects various types of information. With Keeper, however, you'll have an extra 10GB of data storage on family plans. Even if Keeper doesn't have a data storage category you need, you can add it to your vault.

We also like that Keeper offers biometric logins. FaceID and fingerprint scanners make your password manager login personal to you, which better protects your data. At this point, we aren't sure why all security software doesn't incorporate biometrics.

What we didn't like

Dark web monitoring should be standard among all premium password managers, but Keeper offers its signature BreachWatch only as an add-on. Since Keeper has many security features, we found this odd.

Star rating summary

Keeper has a high star rating of 4.7 because of its user-friendly apps, high security standards, and extensive compatibility.

Keeper lost points in the experience category because autofill has been inconsistent in our experience.

    Best Password Manager For Compatibility

    Bitwarden
    • Open-source software and zero-knowledge encryption means only you can see your data
    • Completely compatible across operating systems, including Linux
    • Share passwords and files securely with built-in link expirations and open limits

    1Password vs. Bitwarden: Key differences

    • Open-source: Bitwarden's open source code is publicly auditable and undergoes regular third-party security audits — most recently by Fracture Labs in 2024. 1Password is proprietary, so you're relying on trust rather than independently verifiable code.
    • Compatibility: Bitwarden supports more browsers than any other pick in this article, including Vivaldi, Tor Browser, and DuckDuckGo, as well as all major platforms and operating systems.
    • Self-hosting: Bitwarden can be fully self-hosted, giving privacy-focused users complete control over where their vault data lives. 1Password is cloud-only with no self-hosting option.
    • Price: Bitwarden's paid plans start lower than 1Password's, and a free tier is available for users who need core password management without a subscription commitment.

Want a full breakdown? Read our Bitwarden vs. 1Password comparison.

    What we liked

Of all the alternatives in this article, Bitwarden runs on the widest range of devices and browsers. Beyond the standard Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android support, Bitwarden's browser extensions cover Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi, TorBrowser, and DuckDuckGo — more than any other password manager we've tested. If you've ever had a password manager fail you on an uncommon browser or operating system, Bitwarden is built to prevent that.

Its open-source foundation is a genuine trust differentiator. Unlike 1Password's proprietary code, Bitwarden's entire codebase is publicly auditable, and the company conducts regular third-party security audits to back that up. For users who want to verify (not just trust) that their data is protected, that transparency matters.

Bitwarden also supports self-hosting, allowing privacy-focused users to run the platform on their own infrastructure and maintain complete control over where their vault data lives. And Bitwarden Send lets you share encrypted text or files via a link with built-in expiration controls, which is a feature that goes beyond standard password sharing and is unique among the alternatives in this article.

    Bitwarden integration
    Bitwarden working with Netflix

    What we didn't like

You can share passwords with Bitwarden, but you'll need to take an extra step first: create an organization to store those passwords before sharing. You also can't share files unless you've purchased a plan, which isn't expensive, but it's still an annoying extra step.

    Star rating summary

Bitwarden has a high star rating of 4.8 because of its budget-friendly plans, comprehensive autofill and security features, and inclusive compatibility across devices.

Bitwarden received a lower score in the experience category because we found its password sharing process to be complicated.

    Best password manager for families

If a family plan is your primary use case, we'll be straightforward: 1Password is actually our top recommendation. While this article focuses on alternatives, 1Password's family-specific features are genuinely hard to beat, particularly Travel Mode, which hides selected vaults when crossing borders, and Watchtower, which proactively monitors your family's accounts for weak passwords, data breaches, and accounts that support two-factor authentication but haven't enabled it. Considering digital legacy access and intuitive shared vault management, 1Password is purpose-built for the way families actually use a password manager together.

    1Password Watchtower feature report

At $4.49/mo for up to five users, it's also a reasonable per-person cost when split across a household. If you tested it during the trial and the price or subscription commitment is the sticking point, our picks here do close the gap. NordPass covers up to six users starting at $2.79/mo with strong encryption and a clean family vault experience, and RoboForm is the most affordable option in our lineup at $1.59/mo for up to five users, without cutting corners on core security features.

But if family sharing and account oversight are your priorities (not just the price), it's worth giving 1Password another look before switching. You can learn more in our complete 1Password review.

For a broader comparison of family-friendly options, see our full guide to the best password managers for families.

    Best free 1Password alternatives

Unlike 1Password, which requires a paid annual subscription after a 14-day trial with no refund option, NordPass offers a free plan with no time limit. That makes it the strongest free alternative for anyone not ready to commit to a paid password manager.

NordPass's free tier includes core vault storage, a password generator for creating strong passwords, and biometric login options like Face ID and fingerprint, a security feature that many paid managers reserve for premium tiers. It's backed by Nord Security, one of the most trusted names in consumer cybersecurity, so you're not sacrificing credibility to save money.

The free plan has limits: advanced features like data breach alerts, email masking, and emergency account access are only available on paid plans starting at $1.49/mo. But for users who want a reliable, free password manager from a brand with a strong security track record, NordPass is a clear step up from using no password manager.

For a broader comparison of free options across the market, see our full guide to the best free password managers.

Bottom line: The best 1Password alternatives

RoboForm, NordPass, Keeper, and Bitwarden are all excellent alternatives to 1Password. RoboForm comes in at the right price and doesn't skimp on ease of use; NordPass offers progressive security; Keeper offers more customization; and Bitwarden offers the widest compatibility of any pick in our lineup, with open-source transparency and self-hosting for users who want full control over their data. Any of these can potentially replace 1Password if you've found it isn't for you.

    FAQs

    What are 1Password’s disadvantages?

1Password has a weird pricing structure. You can trial it for free for 14 days, but after that, you’ll have to purchase a year’s subscription. If you don’t like 1Password, there aren’t any money-back guarantees or refunds.

Is it worth paying for 1Password?

Yes, 1Password is worth it. 1Password saves all types of data, so someone looking for a virtual vault will find its features useful. If you’re looking for something simpler, you may want to try a password manager like Bitwarden. Its unlimited free plan includes all the core functions of a secure password manager. Check out our comprehensive 1Password vs. Bitwarden comparison for more details.

Why is LastPass better than 1Password?

LastPass isn’t better than 1Password. While 1Password had a security “incident,” it’s never been breached. LastPass has been breached several times. We don’t recommend using LastPass.

Is there anything better than 1Password?

As far as types of data that can be stored and protected, 1Password is the most robust. RoboForm is cheaper, NordPass has better security, Keeper allows for more customization, and Bitwarden offers an unlimited free plan. Depending on your needs, you’ll likely find one of these to be a good fit.

What is the Apple alternative to 1Password?

Apple released Apple Passwords with its iOS 18 update, which is meant to function more like a password manager than its predecessor, iCloud Keychain. While it doesn’t protect as much information as 1Password, you’ll still have a secure, built-in password manager that auto-fills apps and websites. For more information, read our in-depth breakdown of Apple Passwords vs. 1Password.
