How we test and rate password managers

We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.

By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full testing methodology here.

Password Manager
NordPass
Up to 56% + 3 extra months
  • #1 ranked password manager with a strong history
  • Trusted Nord name backed by above industry standard encryption
  • Grab NordPass on its own or opt for a fully-featured security bundle
  • Free version limited to one device at a time

Who it’s best for

  • Users who like 1Password’s security, including two-factor authentication and strong encryption, will find even more security with NordPass. NordPass uses multi-factor authentication with different authentication methods, including biometrics.

What we liked

When comparing NordPass and 1Password, we found that NordPass had a few advantages. It starts at a lower price point, which makes its paid plans affordable for nearly every budget. NordPass also includes 24/7 support with chat options, while 1Password’s support options were limited to email, community forums, a help center, and social media.

NordPass has an easy-to-follow walkthrough to get you started when you first set up your account.

When it comes to security, NordPass uses xChaCha20 as its encryption style because it has the potential to be safer down the road. 1Password’s AES-256-bit encryption is extremely secure, but with quantum computing advancements, AES is already showing signs that it could become vulnerable. NordPass decided to avoid that potential pitfall and use different encryption methods to ensure its longevity and protection.

What we didn’t like

NordPass does offer a free plan, unlike 1Password, but it’s limited. You’ll get core functions like a biometric login and a password generator for creating strong passwords, but more advanced security features are limited to paid plans. If you’re on a budget and looking for a robust, free password manager, NordPass might not be it.

Keeper: Best for customization

Password Manager
Keeper
  • Password manager with ample security features
  • The extension works with almost any browser
  • Autofill may not always work

Who it’s best for

  • If you like the fact that 1Password feels customizable because of all the categories of data you can store, Keeper may be the perfect alternative. Keeper allows you to create custom fields to populate on websites when you want your information to be automatically filled.

What we liked

Keeper’s customizable dashboard is helpful and can feel similar to 1Password’s expanded dashboard, which protects various types of information. With Keeper, however, you’ll have an extra 10GB of data storage on family plans. Even if Keeper doesn’t have a category of data storage you need, you can add it to your vault.

Keeper two-factor authentication options

We also like that Keeper offers biometric logins. FaceID and fingerprint scanners make your password manager login personal to you, which better protects your data. At this point, we aren’t sure why all security software doesn’t incorporate biometrics.

What we didn’t like

Dark web monitoring should be standard among all premium password managers, but Keeper offers its signature BreachWatch only as an add-on. Since Keeper tends to have many security features, we found this odd.

Password Manager
Bitwarden
  • Fully functional free plan
  • Open-source software
  • Sharing limited to one person with paid plan

Who it’s best for

  • 1Password offers only paid plans, so anyone looking for a password manager that’s simple, secure, and free will love Bitwarden. Bitwarden’s free plan offers all its core functions, so you’ll get a complete product without adding to your monthly budget.

What we liked

While 1Password offers only a 14-day free trial and then locks you into a year’s subscription, Bitwarden welcomes you with an unlimited free plan. The core features are still present, making it a fully functional password manager. If you want upgraded features, you can purchase an annual subscription for less than the cost of a movie ticket.

Bitwarden dashboard tutorial

Not only is Bitwarden a functional free password manager, but it also has excellent security and safety ratings. It’s open source and uses zero-knowledge encryption. You can even share passwords on the free plan. With Bitwarden Send, you can even send encrypted texts at no additional cost.

What we didn’t like

You can share passwords with Bitwarden, but you’ll have to take an extra step first to create organizations to store those passwords before sharing. You also can’t share files unless you’ve purchased a plan, which isn’t expensive, but it’s still an annoying extra step.

Apple released Apple Passwords with its iOS 18 update, which is meant to function more like a password manager than its predecessor, iCloud Keychain. While it doesn’t protect as much information as 1Password, you’ll still have a secure, built-in password manager that auto-fills apps and websites. For more information, read our in-depth breakdown of Apple Passwords vs. 1Password.
