RoboForm pros and cons

RoboForm is one of the most affordable password managers on the market, still offering most of the main features you'd want despite the low price. Our testing found the program to be easy to use overall and worked as promised.

The main downside we found to RoboForm was that, though they have a free plan, you're limited to only one device. This can be frustrating when you want to access your accounts on another device like your phone, so opting for a premium account is likely your better bet. It also doesn't currently offer the option to store photos in your secure notes, which makes it slightly less useful than other products on the market.

There are a lot of similarities between RoboForm and 1Password. They both store passwords and other data, such as your credit card info, offer a form filler so you don’t have to endlessly type your information, and provide you with the ability to share your passwords in case of emergency. Yet RoboForm’s individual plan has a lower starting price than 1Password’s individual plan ($1.66/mo (billed annually) vs. $2.99/mo (billed annually)).

RoboForm stands out because its product is more accessible, especially for individuals. RoboForm offers a free product that’s great for anyone wanting to shake off Google. As far as standard password manager features are concerned, you’ll be able to get any of them with both RoboForm and 1Password. The only caveat is that many of RoboForm’s features come with the paid plans only, but a single person with one device might not need the additional features. Even so, the plans are reasonably priced, so there won’t be a drain on your bank account, even in this economy.

Both programs have a digital legacy feature. RoboForm calls it Emergency Access, and it allows you to designate one or more heirs to inherit your passwords. The recipient must also be a RoboForm user, but the free account will allow your heir to receive your password. 1Password employs the Emergency Kit, where you create a PDF with your information and are encouraged to also print out a hard copy and keep it with your important documents.

One main feature that RoboForm doesn't offer is cloud storage, or the ability to attach images or videos to your notes. You can only save text for RoboForm, where 1Password gives you access to up to 1GB of encrypted storage with your accounts. This can be helpful for sharing pictures or screenshots of important information.

When it comes to the extra features, RoboForm's local mode is convenient. This will allow you to store everything only on your computer, so it's never uploaded to the cloud and thus less likely to be hacked. 1Password no longer offers a local vault, but it does offer a data breach scanner and travel mode, a unique feature that will remove your login info from a device if it leaves the country.

You know we love to read a privacy policy here. When we clicked on the link to RoboForm’s privacy policy, we found a block of text that’s hard to read. RoboForm is vague about what it does to protect your data, but it does claim it collects only the data that is necessary to operate. It also doesn’t send your data to other businesses or individuals outside of business operations.

1Password offered more transparency. 1Password does encrypt your secure data, data you enter into its service for your personal use, and doesn’t offer the ability to unencrypt it. But it does collect service data, such as your name, payment information, IP addresses, and this data is surprisingly accessible to employees. The privacy policy doesn’t distinguish which employees, so we’ll have to assume all. That’s not our favorite thing, but there is a promise that your data won’t be mishandled. Ok, we guess.

Neither RoboForm or 1Password has ever suffered a data breach, unlike competitors like LastPass and Norton LifeLock. However, a study performed by the University of York proved that researchers were able to trick both of these services.

In the same study, it was discovered that 1Password didn’t protect against multiple login attempts, leaving it potentially open to a brute-force attack. On the other hand, RoboForm was part of the group that allowed passwords to be copied without encryption from the clipboard of the device. Neither of these exploits have actually been utilized by a cybercriminal, but they are worth noting.

There are only slight differences between the two programs’ compatibility and customer support.
