There are a lot of similarities between RoboForm and 1Password. They both store passwords and other data, such as your credit card info, offer a form filler so you don’t have to endlessly type your information, and provide you with the ability to share your passwords in case of emergency. Yet RoboForm’s individual plan has a lower starting price than 1Password’s individual plan ($0.99/mo vs. $2.99/mo).

RoboForm stands out because its product is more accessible, especially for individuals. RoboForm offers a free product that’s great for anyone wanting to shake off Google. Google’s password manager is notoriously faulty, so having an option like RoboForm to replace it for free is great. RoboForm also offers a money-back guarantee. If you’re unhappy with 1Password, you’ll need to wait until the end of your current license to cancel.

As far as standard password manager features are concerned, you’ll be able to get any of them with both RoboForm and 1Password. The only caveat is that many of RoboForm’s features come with the paid plans only, but a single person with one device might not need the additional features. Even so, the plans are reasonably priced, so there won’t be a drain on your bank account, even in this economy.

Both programs have a digital legacy feature. RoboForm calls it Emergency Access, and it allows you to designate one or more heirs to inherit your passwords. The recipient must also be a RoboForm user, but the free account will allow your heir to receive your password.

1Password employs the Emergency Kit, which is more than a digital legacy product. Unlike RoboForm, you don’t designate someone who will inherit your passwords. Rather, you create a PDF with your information and are encouraged to also print out a hard copy and keep it with your important documents. This can be shared with the entire family or a single person you trust.

Since both products contain all of the above-mentioned features, we really couldn’t choose a favorite. Both offer plenty of storage, both offer security with password checks and 2FA, and both give you options to leave your passwords to loved ones. For this one, we think it’s too close to call.

Winner: Tie. They contain similar features that both offer ease of use and increased functionality.

Which is safer, RoboForm or 1Password?

You know we love to read a privacy policy here. When we clicked on the link to RoboForm’s privacy policy, we got a blank page! We were eventually able to load the privacy policy page, but we found a block of text that’s hard to read. RoboForm is vague about what it does to protect your data, but it does claim it collects only the data that is necessary to operate. It also doesn’t send your data to other businesses or individuals outside of business operations.

1Password offered more transparency. 1Password does encrypt your secure data, data you enter into its service for your personal use, and doesn’t offer the ability to unencrypt it. But it does collect service data, such as your name, payment information, IP addresses, and this data is surprisingly accessible to employees. The privacy policy doesn’t distinguish which employees, so we’ll have to assume all. That’s not our favorite thing, but there is a promise that your data won’t be mishandled. Ok, we guess.

Neither RoboForm or 1Password has ever suffered a data breach, unlike competitors like LastPass and Norton LifeLock. However, a study performed by the University of York proved that researchers were able to trick both of these services.

In the same study, it was discovered that 1Password didn’t protect against multiple login attempts, leaving it potentially open to a brute-force attack. On the other hand, RoboForm was part of the group that allowed passwords to be copied without encryption from the clipboard of the device. Neither of these exploits have actually been utilized by a cybercriminal, but they are worth noting.

Winner: Tie. They both undergo regular security audits, neither has been breached, and both include small vulnerabilities that could lead to a potential breach.

There are only slight differences between the two programs’ compatibility and customer support. In addition to covering the Big Four operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android), they each offer compatibility with Linux. RoboForm can be installed on Opera, while 1Password offers compatibility with Brave. Both work on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod as well as Android-capable phones.

The biggest difference is in the support options. While 1Password, for all its offerings, only has community forums, social media support, and email, RoboForm actually gives you the ability to talk to a person. With the live chat and limited phone support, RoboForm edges out 1Password with better service.

Winner: RoboForm. The ability to talk with an actual human being when you’re trying to troubleshoot is so much better than waiting for an email you may not immediately understand.
