We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations. By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches. NordPass: Best for long-term security
Who it’s best for
- If you like RoboForm’s built-in authenticator and other forms of security, we think you’ll appreciate NordPass’ progressive approach to security now and in the future. You’ll be able to create and store strong passwords with more security than you had before.
What we liked
Like RoboForm, NordPass includes a built-in authenticator. Unlike RoboForm, NordPass chose the even more secure xChaCha20 as its encryption style. NordPass explains that it did this because AES-256 is already showing signs of being cracked in the future. As it stands now, cracking AES-256 would take millions of years, but as quantum computing becomes more real, that timeline could drastically change.
NordPass examined not only what’s safe currently but also what might be the safest road for the future. This is consistent with Nord Security as a company, which always looks at the next step in cybersecurity. Couple this with the additional NordPass security features like email masking and more recent security audits, and you have a super secure password management solution.
What we didn’t like
Like RoboForm, NordPass has a lot of restrictions on its free plan. You can’t share credentials, detect weak or reused passwords, or mask your email, just to name a few. You’ll still be able to save information, but you’ll have a pared-down version that isn’t as robust as the paid plans.
1Password: Best for diverse data protection
Who it’s best for
- If you like saving different types of information, such as logins, notes, bookmarks, and other data, you’ll appreciate all the different categories of data you can save on 1Password.
What we liked
While RoboForm gives you a few categories of information, 1Password is basically a walking planner. You can save a lot more than just your online logins. 1Password lets you secure important credentials like your driver’s license and passport, medical records, membership cards for grocery stores and gyms (among others), and a lot more.
1Password includes extra features like Watchtower and Travel Mode. Travel Mode removes your vaults when you travel to protect you in case of device theft. Watchtower scans the dark web for your passwords and data, helps you protect insecure credentials, and gives you tips on how to be more secure online.
What we didn’t like
1Password doesn’t have a free plan. There’s a 14-day free trial, after which you’ll be charged for a full year of 1Password. If you don’t like it, there aren’t any refunds. If you want to use 1Password, you’ll have to make sure it’s the software for you. Otherwise, you’re locked in for a year.
Bitwarden: Best for comprehensive free security
Who it’s best for
- If you love RoboForm’s unlimited password storage on its free plan, you’ll like Bitwarden Free’s unlimited password storage and device use. Bitwarden’s free plan offers unlimited comprehensive security across all your devices.
What we liked
Bitwarden offers complete, functional security to anyone looking for a free password manager. While the more robust features are available only with paid plans, you can still get complete password management with Bitwarden Free.
While we frequently warn against free software, Bitwarden doesn’t merit those concerns. We’ve found it to have excellent security and trustworthiness. While no software is infallible, Bitwarden puts a lot of effort into ensuring it’s a reputable, safe solution.
What we didn’t like
Password sharing with Bitwarden might be a bit confusing: There are different methods depending on your operating system. We’d like a simple “share” button to make everything easy. Plus, you can’t utilize all of Bitwarden Send — the free version limits you to sending encrypted texts instead of texts and files.
FAQs
Is RoboForm free?
RoboForm has a free plan that lets you save unlimited passwords on one device. You can access features like two-factor authentication and password monitoring, but you need to purchase a paid plan to access all of RoboForm’s features.
What are RoboForm’s disadvantages?
In our testing, RoboForm had a few disadvantages. We weren’t able to create more than one autofill profile, which means that we can’t separate our personal and business profiles. When flagging problematic passwords, there weren’t clear, actionable steps to resolve the issue. We wish there were a button or link that would assist us in fixing the compromised password, as we found in some other password managers.
Is RoboForm trustworthy?
RoboForm has been independently audited and has 4.4 stars on TrustPilot’s website. We found that it’s never been breached, and the privacy policy states that it uses the minimum amount of customer data necessary to manage your account. While we can’t ever make a 100% claim that something is secure and trustworthy, RoboForm certainly checks all of the boxes at the moment.
What's better than RoboForm?
We find that NordPass, 1Password, and Bitwarden all have attributes that make them equal to or better choices than RoboForm. NordPass includes excellent security and is forward-thinking, 1Password protects more data than the average password manager, and Bitwarden has a robust free plan for anyone craving simplicity in a password manager.
What is the best password manager right now?
We think NordPass, with its progressive approach to security, useful features, and bundling potential, is the best password manager right now. NordPass is in the same family as NordVPN, a company that strives to increase personal internet security.
Bottom line: The best RoboForm alternatives
NordPass, 1Password, and Bitwarden are all solid alternatives to RoboForm. NordPass has a long-term security plan ahead of its competitors, 1Password covers a diverse range of data protection, and Bitwarden offers simple yet comprehensive free security to anyone who doesn’t like a lot of bells and whistles.
No matter which of the best password managers you choose, you can rest easy knowing you’re taking a big step forward in increasing your online security. Whether you’re looking for high security, lots of data protection, or a secure, free plan, one of the three we reviewed should fit your needs.
