During our testing, we found that NordPass is better than LastPass in almost every way, especially when it comes to password management, extra features, and security.
LastPass has been in the password manager game longer, but after multiple cyberattacks in 2022, many wonder if the longstanding password manager can still be trusted. On the other hand, NordPass is a relatively new player in the password manager space but with a clean record without data breaches.
In this comparison, we’ll detail NordPass vs. LastPass as far as pricing, features, privacy and security, compatibility, and support.

Which is better?
NordPass vs. LastPass review at a glance
The main difference between NordPass and LastPass is the level of security each offers. NordPass was developed by NordVPN, a heavy-hitter in the cybersecurity space, so it’s no surprise that NordPass uses XChaCha20. This level of encryption is not the norm among password managers. NordPass states that XChaCha20 is faster than AES-256 to implement on platforms without AES hardware. Conversely, LastPass uses industry-standard AES-256 encryption.
NordPass and LastPass both offer free plans. However, NordPass forces you to continually log in to your devices, while LastPass gives you unlimited access to your passwords on any device of the same type.

How we test and rate password managers
We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.
By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

NordPass pros and cons
NordPass is one of the absolute best password managers you can get, hitting every item on our checklist. You'll get better than industry standard encryption topped with all the must-haves to make using ultra-secure passwords easier than typing in your old ones.
The main downside of the product is in the free version, which only allows you to be signed in on one device at a time. If you want to use this product across devices, then opting for a paid version will likely save you some headache.
- Trusted Nord name
- Reasonably priced
- Multiple security features
- Free version has annoying restrictions
LastPass pros and cons
While LastPass is a well-known password manager, its unfortunate history with data breaches makes it a hard option to consider.
That said, on paper it's a good product, offering all the features you'd expect.
- Saves and organizes passwords
- Compatible with lots of browsers, OS, and devices
- Helpful features like family profiles and a password generator
- Paid plan is required for personal customer support
- Multiple data breaches as recent as October 2022
Which password manager is the better value?
Both password managers are fairly evenly matched when it comes to the price of their basic plans, but NordPass can offer you way more value if you opt for one of their security bundles.

In terms of paid plans and monthly costs, both NordPass and LastPass offer products for a reasonable monthly cost, varying by just a few dollars each month. NordPass and LastPass offer family plans to cover multiple members as well. Prices start just a few dollars more than premium plans to cover up to six family members.
We think NordPass Premium is the best value for the security and features offered. NordPass Premium comes with autosave and autofill, credit card and secure note storage, access across multiple devices, and password strength reports, to name just a few of the highlights.
Even with all of those amenities available on LastPass's free plan, we think LastPass Premium is its best value. LastPass Premium includes access across all devices, 1 GB of encrypted file storage, password sharing with multiple users, and more.
But if you consider the full potential value of the products, NordPass extends far past LastPass. You can get the service as part of larger NordVPN bundles, which means you can have a VPN, ad blocker, antivirus, password manager, and more all part of one monthly fee. LastPass can't compete with that kind of value.
Which password manager has the better features?
While both password managers come with all the basics, NordPass edges ahead thanks to its extra features, like email masking.

In terms of features, the dueling password managers are quite similar; you can expect to get all the essential features with both programs. They offer password sharing, a password generator for creating strong passwords, autofill, a password strength report, and emergency access for authorized users.
We also like that both NordPass and LastPass have features for emergency access. With NordPass Premium and LastPass Premium, you can provide trusted family or friends access to your password vault in case of emergency.
Where NordPass pulls ahead is by offering additional extra features, like the ability to use a fake email when you fill out online forms, on top of the option to go for the full NordVPN bundle for exceptional protection.
Which password manager is safer?
LastPass has suffered multiple data breaches, which makes NordPass the easy winner in this category.

NordPass and LastPass both use advanced security measures to ensure your data stays private. LastPass uses the industry standard AES-256 encryption, while NordPass uses XChaCha20, which it claims is faster and safer.
Both password managers also offer multiple options for two-factor and multi-factor authentication. This type of passwordless authentication helps bolster your online security. NordPass allows you to secure your account with biometrics, authenticator apps, security keys, and backup codes. LastPass allows you to secure your account with biometrics, mobile device push notifications, voice recognition, SMS codes, and one-time passwords.
In December 2022, LastPass announced that a data breach in August 2022 was more pervasive than they initially thought. User information like passwords and account information was stolen, and hackers were also able to access some of the LastPass source codeThe announcement sent shock waves through the industry, leaving many LastPass users wondering if their information was safe.
While NordPass and LastPass both participate in third-party audits, LastPass hasn’t had an audit since the data breach. Conducted by Schellman Compliance, LLC, in May 2022, LastPass conformed to the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001:2013.
NordPass has never had a data breach and participates in third-party audits, and it uses end-to-end encryption for heightened security and privacy. This means that NordPass employees can’t access your information, only you can. If your account were to be hacked, the hackers would only be able to see gibberish. In June 2022, NordPass successfully completed an independent SOC 2 Type 1 audit, which found no critical issues.
When sharing such personal information, it’s also important to understand what these password managers are doing with your data. A quick look at the privacy policies for both gives us a little insight.
When creating a NordPass account, you’ll be asked for your email address and your payment information. According to NordPass's privacy policy, this is the only information it stores. If you’ve enabled crash reporting in the app settings, then your device stores any app and critical error logs. Crash reports describe how the app terminated and document the code running when the application crashed. So, while NordPass collects some data, it isn’t egregious, and there are workarounds to maintaining your privacy.
LastPass's privacy policy isn’t as clear. LastPass's privacy policy raises several red flags for us: they appear to sell information to “identify leads and prospects for marketing purposes.” For a company that boasts that it keeps your sensitive information secure, it seems a little counterintuitive that it would then sell your information.
Which password manager has better compatibility and customer support?
Both options did well in this category, but we ultimate gave NordPass the win thanks to its superior customer support.

Setting up our NordPass password manager was easy and straightforward. We used the online tutorial to help set up our profile right away. With its import feature, we were able to import passwords from other browsers and password managers, allowing us to set up our account very quickly. We found NordPass to be intuitive and easy to use.
NordPass has a Contact Us page that lists several ways to contact the password manager, including an option to send an email and begin a live chat with its 24/7 customer support. In addition, there are links to a FAQ page to help users find answers to their questions. During our NordPass testing, a customer service representative responded within a few minutes of our query and answered our question satisfactorily.
Installing LastPass was also fairly straightforward, and it’s easy to navigate the web without worrying about remembering your passwords. We found the dashboard easy to navigate, with our passwords organized in neat folders. LastPass also includes a security dashboard with a brief overview of security issues we might face.
With LastPass, it’s also easy to share passwords. You can give the recipient permission to view the password or keep the password private and allow LastPass to autofill without the recipient knowing the password.
LastPass touts 24/7 customer service for its Premium plan. However, on its Contact Us form, LastPass encourages you to browse its support articles and tutorials to try and find answers. We’d like to see LastPass implement a chat option to expedite customer service queries.
FAQs
What are NordPass’s negatives?
In our opinion, NordPass has few negatives. The free version is limited to one device, but NordPass offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, which makes trying the product easy.
Should I no longer use LastPass?
We prefer other, safe options than LastPass. The latest data breach left sensitive user information open to exploitation. Part of the breach included hacking LastPass's source code, which could lead to more hacks in the future.
Is NordPass safer than LastPass?
NordPass and LastPass offer robust security features, including strong encryption, multi-factor authentication, and zero-knowledge architecture. However, NordPass's use of XChaCha20 and an untarnished record for data breaches make us more comfortable using NordPass.
How long does it take to set up NordPass?
The NordPass setup is simple and intuitive. NordPass walks you through the setup, and everything is user friendly. Additionally, if you have NordVPN or NordLocker cloud storage, you’ll understand the interface pretty easily.
NordPass vs. LastPass: Which is better?
If you’re looking for the best overall password manager, we recommend NordPass. NordPass offers standard password manager features, as well as top–of–the–line encryption, advanced security measures, and a breach-free record.
LastPass has all the features we expect in a password manager, but the vague privacy policy, recent data breaches, and lack of customer service options leave us wanting more out of our password manager.
