How we test and rate ad blockers

Every ad blocker in this guide is hands-on tested by our team using a consistent process. We evaluate each product across six areas:

  • Test results (34%): We run each ad blocker through AdBlock Tester and Can You Block It, recording scores for each. We also browse ad-heavy sites in real-world conditions, including watching YouTube videos and visiting Forbes, to verify day-to-day performance.
  • Value (21%): We evaluate each product's cost relative to its blocking performance, factoring in starting price, money-back guarantee length, and the number of devices covered under a single subscription.
  • Features (18%): We test each ad blocker against a six-point checklist covering its ability to block pop-up ads, trackers, YouTube ads, banner ads, and push ads, as well as whether it includes whitelisting functionality.
  • Editor's score (15%): We use each product ourselves across supported platforms, evaluating how intuitive the interface is and anything else that affects day-to-day use that isn't captured by our other criteria.
  • Customer support (7%): We evaluate the support options available, prioritizing human support options like live chat and email.
  • Compatibility (5%): We review each ad blocker's compatibility across desktop apps, browser extensions, and mobile apps to determine how broad its device and platform coverage is.

We test all ad blockers at least twice a year to ensure our recommendations stay current. We test across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS so our results reflect real-world performance on the devices most readers actually use.

  • Instantly blocks distracting ads on millions of websites, including Facebook and YouTube ads
  • Blocks third-party trackers to protect your privacy and information
  • Improves page load times and enables faster browsing

Total Adblock offers a good free ad blocking extension as well as a robust premium plan, which includes real-time antivirus protection with TotalAV. This standalone ad blocker is easy to set up and use, offers helpful customizations, and won't slow down your browser.

What we liked

Usability: Total Adblock is the ultimate "set-it-and-forget-it" ad blocker. Other ad blocking extensions may require more in-depth configuration, greater technical know-how, or the use of bundled software to get browsing protections. With Total Adblock, once you've updated your settings and customizations, you're good to go.

Value: Total Adblock offers a good free extension, but the real value is in the premium plan. You get unlimited ad blocking plus web protection with the award-winning antivirus solution TotalAV. The antivirus includes WebShield, which provides real-time phishing and malware protection. And like Total Adblock, TotalAV is easy to use. In fact, Total Security's whole thing is simplicity, so the software is good for everyday internet users.

Performance: Total Adblock crushed our independent testing, with perfect scores for AdBlock Tester and Can You Block It. Based on our hands-on experience, Total Adblock easily blocks pop-ups, banner ads, interstitial ads, trackers, and more.

What we didn’t like

Annoying pop-ups: This one is ironic, but Total Adblock blasts you with prompts to upgrade when you use the free ad blocking extension. We found this to be irritating and a detractor of using the free tool.

Limited free plan: The free version also excludes the top 15,000 websites, has a cap on blocking, and won't block browser notifications, whereas the premium version blocks unlimited ads from everywhere. So you have to heed the annoying pop-ups and upgrade if you want full ad blocking capabilities.

Total Adblock pros and cons

Pros
  • Browser extension and mobile app are easy to install and set up
  • Premium plan includes TotalAV antivirus protection
  • Options to manage websites and ad preferences
Cons
  • Annoying pop-ups prompt you to upgrade to premium
  • Free version excludes top 15,000 websites

  • Blocks ads, banners, and pop-ups on your browser and apps, including smart TVs
  • Enjoy boosted browsing speeds and save money on mobile data with its effective ad-blocking capabilities
  • Added benefit of a VPN to encrypt your data, hide your IP address, avoid phishing scams, and minimize malware risks

Surfshark CleanWeb is bundled with the highly-rated Surfshark VPN. CleanWeb is a reliable and affordable ad blocker designed to provide you with maximum protection against annoying or intrusive ads, tracking technologies, cookie consent requests, malicious content, and more. The software uses advanced algorithms to detect and block potentially dangerous elements while also freeing up system resources that unwanted ads would otherwise occupy. One of the most notable features is the cookie consent pop-up blocker. It allows you to browse and shop without dealing with unwanted pop-up requests or ads.

Surfshark CleanWeb can be turned on from your Surfshark VPN app for desktop and mobile. It also works for other applications, such as streaming services and gaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. This ad blocker is also designed to be lightweight, requiring minimal system resources and memory consumption.

What we liked

Versatility: Compatibility with various platforms and devices also makes this product more appealing if you need to block annoying ads on unlimited devices simultaneously. CleanWeb 2.0 is available as a browser extension for Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Firefox, while the standard CleanWeb is available with the VPN app on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and FireTV.

In addition, Surfshark CleanWeb 2.0, which is available as an ad blocker extension for your browser, can be configured to allow certain types of ads or trackers if desired, providing a level of control over your experience.

Budget security suite: Surfshark CleanWeb is an excellent choice for anyone searching for a secure and convenient online experience. Its low price makes it accessible to almost everyone, no matter your budget. Additionally, the Surfshark One bundle, which starts at $2.08/mo for 24 months, includes add-ons like data breach alerts, an antivirus, and a private search engine, which all add up to a complete package that can help protect your privacy even further.

What we didn’t like

No standalone ad blocker: We wish CleanWeb were available without having to connect to the Surfshark VPN. On the other hand, CleanWeb 2.0 works even with the VPN disconnected. While we certainly recommend connecting to a VPN for greater privacy and security whenever accessing the internet, in certain situations, this simply may not be possible. So extending this functionality to the original CleanWeb feature would be helpful.

Some interference: Additionally, CleanWeb may also interfere with the functionality of some websites. For these reasons, you should consider carefully whether or not you need to have Surfshark CleanWeb enabled at all times.

Surfshark CleanWeb pros and cons

Pros
  • Blocks ads and malware on unlimited devices
  • Cookie consent blocker
  • Faster website loading time
Cons
  • May require VPN connection
  • Can interfere with websites

  • Stops intrusive ads before they can even load, improving browsing speed and experience
  • Identifies malware-ridden files and protects against visiting malicious websites
  • Encrypts your data and blocks third-party trackers for increased security and privacy

NordVPN Threat Protection is the best choice if you need full web protection in addition to blocking annoying ads. Bundled with NordVPN, Threat Protection offers a comprehensive package that not only blocks ads, pop-ups, banners, and trackers but also scans files to protect against malicious downloads.

NordVPN Threat Protection also offers URL trimming, a feature that removes tracking parameters from website URLs you visit. This means your browsing history and data can't be used to track you, giving you an extra layer of privacy. URL trimming works automatically, so there's no need to fight with your cursor to highlight parts of a web address manually.

Overall, NordVPN Threat Protection’s comprehensive suite of features makes it a great choice for privacy-conscious people who want more than just basic ad-blocking functionality.

What we liked

Robust web protection: NordVPN Threat Protection is an all-in-one solution that offers comprehensive protection from online threats. With URL trimming, it helps to eliminate tracking parameters from website URLs you visit, making sure your data remains secure and private.

Threat Protection also comes with malware scanning capabilities and scans files you download to help protect against malicious software.

YouTube video showing no ads with NordVPN Threat Protection Pro in the foreground

Bundled with the best VPN: In addition to the standard ad-blocking features, you'll also receive NordVPN's virtual private network (VPN). NordVPN offers the best speeds, next-generation encryption protocols, and standard features like kill switch and split tunneling.

Plus, Nord has an extensive server network of 9,300+ servers in 130+ countries with specialized servers for P2P, Onion Over VPN, double VPN, and more.

What we didn’t like

Not as user-friendly: We had some trouble figuring out how to whitelist websites with Threat Protection. We couldn't find the setting after 10 minutes of searching, and we didn't find any clarity with some Google searches. After more testing, we found that you can whitelist websites by turning Threat Protection on and viewing the Web tab. This may not be intuitive for most users.

Cumbersome cancellation process: In addition, canceling NordVPN is very difficult. The process involves several clicks, including an email confirmation request that expires in 15 minutes. This makes it difficult and time-consuming to cancel the service if you decide you no longer want it.

NordVPN Threat Protection pros and cons

Pros
  • Outstanding ad-blocking abilities
  • Blocks unsafe and malicious sites
  • Top-notch VPN included
Cons
  • Whitelisting function is confusing
  • Hard to cancel the service

How to choose the best ad blocker for Edge

Choosing the best ad blocker for Edge is an important decision. After all, it’s responsible for protecting you from intrusive and malicious ads that can compromise your security, privacy, and data. To make sure you find an ad blocker that fits your needs and performs optimally, there are a few key factors to consider:

First, it's essential to research the software and verify its legitimacy before installing an ad blocker on your device. Fake or malicious versions of the software may not provide adequate protection against ads, or even worse — they could be designed to steal your data or infect your device with malware.

Second, ensure the ad blocker has enough customization options to effectively block various types of ads while still allowing access to specific types of ads or content you want to view.

This includes video ads, banners, and pop-ups, as well as other forms of intrusive advertisements. Some ad blockers are too strong and may block relevant content that is necessary for certain websites or applications to run properly.

Third, investigate the customer support provided by the software developer — this could be a key factor in selecting your ad blocker. A reliable customer service team will address any issues quickly and provide guidance if needed when configuring or troubleshooting the software.

Finally, double-check which type of ads are blocked by each ad blocker before making your selection; some programs may only block banner-type ads but not videos or vice versa. Be aware that many free versions of ad blockers may limit the range of ads that can be blocked and could offer limited customization options.

FAQs

What’s the best ad blocker for Microsoft Edge?

When it comes to the best ad blocker for Microsoft Edge, Total Adblock is a solid choice based on price, performance, and perks. It’s an easy-to-use solution that protects against malicious ads and malware. Plus, it's paired with TotalAV, a leader in real-time antivirus protection. Although Microsoft Edge includes built-in ad blocking features, it can't block ads embedded on webpages, leaving you vulnerable to malware.

Is there anything better than AdBlock?

Yes. When it comes to blocking ads, several alternatives to AdBlock offer superior protection. Based on our testing, we found that AdBlock doesn't block YouTube ads, which is a deal breaker for us. Plenty of other freemium ad blockers can do both, including Total Adblock, AdLock, and AdGuard.

What’s the safest ad blocker?

The safest ad blocker is NordVPN Threat Protection. It provides a comprehensive range of protection against malicious online threats, including ads and pop-ups. It blocks ads from loading on websites and in your browser and also prevents tracking attempts, ensuring your data remains secure.

NordVPN Threat Protection also offers malware protection, which helps protect you from threats that may have otherwise gone undetected. All of these features make Nord one of the most reliable ad blockers on the market today.

What’s the best free ad blocker?

The best free ad blocker was uBlock Origin. Unfortunately, uBlock Origin is no longer available on Google Chrome for some users following the Manifest v3 update. For now, it still works fine for Microsoft Edge. However, Microsoft Edge plans to phase out uBlock Origin in 2025.

Our other favorites include Ghostery, which blocks ads on YouTube videos, and AdGuard, which includes an allowlist that lets you disable the ad blocker on your favorite website or allow acceptable ads, such as those on your favorite YouTuber’s channel.

Bottom line

Based on our research and testing, we think the best ad blockers for Microsoft Edge are Total Adblock, Surfshark CleanWeb, and NordVPN Threat Protection. All three provide excellent protection against ads while also offering a range of additional security and privacy benefits in the Edge browser.

But when it comes to our top pick, we found Total Adblock to be the best ad blocker for Microsoft Edge. It has a wide range of advanced security features that make it great at blocking ads, as well as protecting your privacy and data while you're online.

Surfshark CleanWeb is another great choice if you need an ad blocker for unlimited devices, including smart TVs. It supports unlimited simultaneous VPN connections and comes with powerful content-filtering features to block ads across platforms. NordVPN Threat Protection is also a good ad blocker for those who need advanced security features.
