How we test and rate data removal services

To review data removal services, we sign up for the service anywhere from a week to a month in advance. This allows it time to gather our data, scrub it from the data broker and people search sites, and send us reports on its process.

With so many data broker websites, you’ll want to make sure the one you choose sends requests to a lot of them, as well as follows up and searches for more.

Once we've spent some time with the service, we calculate our editorial rating by taking into account key features, prices, security measures, and other criteria.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full data removal testing methodology here.

DeleteMe pros and cons

DeleteMe offers three annual plans starting at $6.97/mo (billed every two years), which is considerably less than Privacy Bee. You can also opt for data removal for an individual or couple, which includes the option for phone, card, and email masking.

Pros
  • Scans and sends requests to hundreds of data brokers (with automatic and custom removals)
  • Includes extra privacy tools
  • Has continuous removal every 3 months
Cons
  • Does not include marketing list opt-out
  • No 24/7 customer support

Privacy Bee pros and cons

Privacy Bee features a privacy browser extension compatible with Firefox. You’ll pay $197.00/yr for a single year’s worth of data removal services for one user, and there’s no free version available. The monthly breakdown is higher than that of some other products we’ve reviewed, but Privacy Bee does offer coverage for individuals, couples, families, and businesses.

Pros
  • Includes a privacy browser extension for Firefox
  • Reports are easy to understand
  • Includes marketing list removal
Cons
  • Plans are expensive
  • Difficult to validate progress

DeleteMe plans

DeleteMe offers three plans to choose from, and for those looking to save money, a 2-year subscription is available. There’s no free trial or actual money-back guarantee, but you can receive a full refund if you request it before your first privacy report is generated. That could be less than a week, though. All plans offer 153+ automatic data broker removals as well as hundreds more custom removals.

  • 1 Person, 1 Year: This individual plan option covers one user and includes a data broker opt-out and extra privacy tools. It does not include marketing list removal or real-time alerts.
  • 1 Person, 2 Years: This individual plan offers all the same benefits as the annual plan, just with biennial billing.
  • 2 People, 2 Years: DeleteMe’s best value plan offers all the same features as the individual plan, but it covers two users for 2 years.

Privacy Bee plans

Privacy Bee offers three plans: Essentials, Pro, and Signature. Although all plans offer a whopping 879+ removals, only the top-tier plan includes custom removals, dark web monitoring, and priority expedited removals. With Privacy Bee, you can purchase annual plans for individuals, couples, families, and businesses; however, the costs become exorbitant as the number of people added to the plan increases.

  • Privacy Bee Essentials: The base plan offers mostly 879+ automatic continuous monitoring, unlimited emails, phones, addresses, and alt. names for online identity protection, real-time dashboard reporting, and monthly reports.
  • Privacy Bee Pro: On top of the base offerings, you get custom removals for 182,295 sites, Google, Yahoo, and Bing search monitoring as well as search result removal, doxxing protection with social media listening, monitoring and removals of paste sites, dark web monitoring, mass-marketing opt-out, and the cherry on top: your house pic blurred out on Google Maps and Apple Maps.
  • Privacy Bee Signature: All of the Pro features plus priority expedited removals and assistance for complex takedowns and critical exposures.

Winner: DeleteMe is the winner here. Privacy Bee offers a lot with its Pro and Signature plans, but we like how transparent DeleteMe is with its pricing structure. You get the same number of automatic and custom removals, with pricing based on the number of people covered and the plan duration.

Privacy Bee offers marketing list removal, whereas DeleteMe doesn’t. DeleteMe rechecks your data every three months, but Privacy Bee promises continuous monitoring. If you want to remove your data from a data broker between periods, you’ll need to submit a custom removal request from your dashboard.

Privacy Bee main dashboard

Privacy Bee updates its dashboard continuously to reflect the latest monitoring updates. Still, you’ll mostly get charts that show your privacy risk, not tons of information regarding your data, which you might have expected.

DeleteMe privacy report summary of results

DeleteMe does have the edge when it comes to email privacy, as it includes email, phone, and card masking, which Privacy Bee doesn’t offer. You also have coverage for 153+ data brokers with DeleteMe and 879+ with Privacy Bee.

Additional features

To provide a clear picture of what data removal services should offer, here we’ll include any additional features not covered above. These may give you a proactive way to secure your data with extra services.

  • Email, phone, and card masking: This service generates unique email addresses and phone numbers to protect your actual information. Knowing your data isn’t floating around the internet makes it easier to contact businesses. DeleteMe and Privacy Bee offer these protection features.
  • Search Yourself: DeleteMe includes a Google search bar that allows you to search and see where your information appears.
  • Industry opt-outs: Privacy Bee offers these options, allowing you to choose not to have your data shared with typical marketing businesses. You can also opt out of receiving credit screening offers. From this section on the dashboard, you can opt out of whitelisting.
  • Free scan: Both DeleteMe and Privacy Bee offer a free scan feature to search online for your data. If you find your information on the internet, you can pay for a subscription to have it removed.

DeleteMe list of privacy tools

Winner: DeleteMe wins because it can remove information from hundreds of data broker sites with automatic and custom removals and includes privacy tools like email, phone, and card masking at a better price point.

Which data removal service is more secure?

Security is a concern with any software. You never want to give out your private information unless you’ve reviewed the company’s privacy policy and feel your data is safe. You want to know that the data is encrypted and if measures like two-factor authentication are available.

Some data collection is reasonable, as the program will need certain information to check for your data on the internet. You’ll also need to enter payment information and other account information.

One of the issues we noticed with Privacy Bee is that there is no clear form of encryption. When examining the security measures used, Privacy Bee appears somewhat vague. The documentation mentions that safety is a priority and that it forces SSL across the site to increase security, but it doesn’t specify the encryption used for the databases. It does make it known that your information is never sold. Still, not knowing what type of encryption Privacy Bee uses made us concerned about a potential data breach.

Additionally, Privacy Bee doesn’t offer an extra security layer with two-factor or multifactor authentication, whereas DeleteMe provides strong encryption and two-factor authentication.

Winner: DeleteMe is the easy winner. Privacy Bee's failure to specify the encryption included makes us hesitant, even under the best circumstances.

Privacy Bee offers numerous features to help secure your data; however, you must pay an annual subscription fee to access them. Signing up for the free privacy screening shows only your overall risk, not the actual brokers who have your information. Since there is only one plan, that means forking out an annual subscription with no money-back guarantee.

The interface is easy to navigate, and you’ll have multiple reports showing your exposure, risk assessment, search cleanup, industry opt-out, and more. Unfortunately, nothing on the dashboard indicates whether your data has been removed from the various websites. You’d need to search for your information on a website. For instance, you could check to see if it removed your data from LexisNexis or another site that had your details.

DeleteMe was also easy to use, and setup was a breeze. You create an account, and the data removal process begins. The dashboard shows your latest report and information regarding your subscription. The most pertinent details are on the Reports and Data Sheet tabs.

Neither of these data removal services has 24/7 customer support. There are various contact methods available when assistance is needed, but please note that you may have to wait a bit for a response.

Winner: DeleteMe. Both products have interfaces that are easy to use, but DeleteMe offers more robust customer support options like live chat, phone, and email.

FAQs

Which is better, DeleteMe or Privacy Bee?

Both products will work to remove your data, but DeleteMe is one of the best available data removal services. It offers features like email, phone, and card masking and access to 153+ data brokers with automatic opt-out requests. Plans also include hundreds more custom removals, so DeleteMe can help you remove your data from 750+ brokers and search sites.

Is DeleteMe worth it?

If you’d rather not spend endless hours searching for your data online and asking brokers to remove it, DeleteMe is worth the cost. Some people may consider it more of a convenience, but it can save you tons of time.

Does Privacy Bee work?

Privacy Bee works, but unless you check various websites, it can be hard to verify that your data was removed. For the cost, there should be easier ways without you needing to search the internet.

DeleteMe vs. Privacy Bee: Which is better?

DeleteMe is better if you want more than a data removal service and need different pricing options. DeleteMe includes additional privacy tools, such as email, phone, and card masking, to provide you with enhanced security.

Spending the money for a year’s subscription to Privacy Bee is a gamble because there’s no money-back guarantee, so if you don’t like the product, you’ve lost that cash. Overall, DeleteMe is a superior product, which is why it made our list as one of the best data removal services of the year.
