How to watch the MLB playoffs in the U.S.

Watching the Major League Baseball playoffs in the United States may be as easy as subscribing to your favorite streaming service for nonstop coverage, both during the regular season and the postseason.

However, it’s worth noting that some providers, like MLB TV, for instance, may have blackouts or restrictions due to exclusivity agreements.

How to watch the MLB playoffs in the U.K.

Baseball fans across the pond can tune into their favorite Major League games as easily as American viewers, with albeit fewer options. TNT Sports and the BBC are rightsholders for the MLB playoffs in the U.K., so those platforms will have the best, most reliable coverage on any postseason baseball.

TNT Sports is streamed on Discovery+, while the BBC has its own streaming platform, BBC iPlayer. iPlayer is free, but you’ll need a TV license to watch.

How to watch the MLB playoffs from anywhere

Streaming platforms make watching the MLB playoffs easily accessible for viewers worldwide. However, there may be geographical restrictions—geo-blocked content or blackouts due to exclusivity agreements.

So what’s a die-hard baseball fan to do?

The quick answer: Use a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs can help fans access the MLB playoffs from anywhere around the world.

The best VPNS not only provide access to important sporting events but also offer increased levels of internet reliability, privacy, and security. Since we’re looking specifically for VPNs to stream the MLB playoffs, let’s look at the best VPNs for MLB.TV.

We found NordVPN, Surfshark and CyberGhost to be the best VPNs for watching those restricted MLB games.

Surfshark allows for streaming on multiple devices, so if you are a house divided between multiple teams, it may be your best option. CyberGhost offers a free trial and a money-back guarantee, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking for an inexpensive option to catch the MLB playoffs.

When all is said and done, it’s hard to beat NordVPN's reliability. Not only does NordVPN offer the best server selection, ensuring you don’t miss a playoff game due to a blackout, it also provides a host of VPN non-negotiables, in our opinion, like malware protection, ad and tracker blocking, a password manager, and dark web monitoring.

Playoff access and cyber protection is a yes in our book.

The MLB playoff schedule

The MLB’s bracket-style postseason playoffs involve 12 teams: the three division winners in each league and three Wild Card teams per league. The teams are still to be determined, but the schedule of playoff games has been released.

It’s worth noting that the first game of the World Series is tentatively planned for October 25. However, the start and end date of the World Series could change depending on what happens in the League Championship Series rounds of playoffs. More specifically, if the ALCS and NLCS both conclude on October 19th or earlier — meaning they both end in Game 4 or 5 — World Series Game 1 would then move up to October 22nd. That would put a winner-take-all Game 7, if necessary, on October 30th.

Can I watch the MLB playoffs for free?

Many streaming platforms offer free trials, so if you time it correctly, you can watch at least some of the Major League Baseball playoff games for free. However, the MLB playoffs consist of four rounds: The playoffs begin the first week of October, culminating with the World Series during the last week of October or the beginning of November.

Most platforms don’t offer a trial that will last the entire playoffs, so while it’s possible to watch some of the playoff games for free, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to watch the entire series for free.

Bottom line

For baseball fans, October signals the paramount time for baseball watching — the MLB playoffs and World Series championship games. Regardless of the team you’re rooting for, baseball fans can usually agree on one thing: Catching a game on TV isn’t always as easy as it seems.

Network restrictions, blackouts, and exclusivity rights can make watching postseason baseball games on your regular streaming platform tricky.
