KeePassDroid is a completely free Android app that lets you use KeePass software on your cell phone.

KeePassDroid features

KeePassDroid is a port of the official KeePass software. Since it's independent, it doesn't have quite the same features as other options. Let's explore what KeePassDroid does and doesn't do.

Password sharing

KeePassDroid is stored locally on your device. It's not cloud software, which means that you can't easily share your password with other people or devices. You need to use a tool like Dropbox to manually synchronize login credentials between devices.

You could possibly share the Dropbox folder with other people, but they’ll need to download a port to access the information. It's a difficult task, especially if you aren't tech-savvy or patient.

Two-factor authentication

KeePassDroid has the option to require biometrics to open files, which provides a potentially more secure option than a master password. This means you would be asked to give your fingerprint in order to gain access to a file.

In order to enable biometric login, go into Settings and scroll down to Automatic biometric Login.

Password generator

KeePassDroid comes equipped with an in-app password generator. You can choose to customize your options by selecting certain features, such as:

Our KeePassDroid experience

Overall, KeePassDroid was extremely confusing to install and isn't for the average user. We downloaded the app on an Android phone. After it was installed, there were no instructions on how to use it or how to import passwords from KeePass.

The app only said to open or create a database, and either way, we were led to our Files to download a file. Eventually, we found a YouTube tutorial on the Google Play page for KeePassDroid. However, it was over a decade old and used outdated KeePass software as part of the demo. And the app isn't up-to-date in general since the latest version was released in 2022.

Our experience left us feeling frustrated. Even though it's a free app, it only contained the bare necessities to count as a password manager. But even then, it was unusual to have a password manager with no ability to sync to other devices. As we mentioned earlier, you’ll need to use a file hosting service like DropBox to share information between devices.

KeePassDroid privacy policy

KeePassDroid is obviously accessing sensitive information. A strong privacy policy means that they won't unnecessarily see or use your data. KeePassDroid's privacy policy is extremely simple.

The entire policy is only two sentences long and states it doesn't collect any information from users and has offline security — not the most reassuring policy. In comparison, NordPass contains a whole section on how it protects your data.

KeePassDroid third-party audits

KeePassDroid has never undergone a third-party audit. Independent audits are essential for ensuring that a company is actively participating in data protection. KeePassDroid may be safe enough to protect your passwords, but it's hard to say without an audit.

Is KeePassDroid safe to use?

As far as we can tell, KeePassDroid has never been hacked or involved in a data breach. However, you may face issues if you try to sync KeePassDroid with other devices. You need to use a file-sharing service to sync passwords, and you need to ensure that it's a secure service.

KeePassDroid customer service

Customer service doesn't exist for KeePassDroid. There is a simple FAQ on the homepage of its website, or you can issue a bug report on Github for the developer to resolve a problem. However, don't get your hopes up. The last resolved issue was in August 2023.

As noted earlier, there’s a YouTube video with a tutorial on how to use KeePassDroid, but it uses outdated KeePass software. Overall, there isn't a person to talk to or any extensive online guides if you’re having problems.
