How we test and rate password managers
We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.
By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

NordPass pros and cons
NordPass is the #1 password manager, which makes it really hard to beat. You can store credit cards and notes, generate unique passwords, and sync data automatically across multiple devices. You can even bundle it with NordVPN to get an all-in-one security suite.
It does offer a decent free plan that limits you to one device at a time. Depending on your needs, this may not be too frustrating, as long as you don't mind having to re-login every time you switch devices.
- Trusted Nord name
- Reasonably priced
- Multiple security features
- Free version has annoying restrictions
Dashlane pros and cons
Dashlane is well-rounded password manager, offering industry-standard security and a pleasant user experience. Opting for more premium plans can get you access to extra features like dark web monitoring and even a VPN.
Dashlane’s free plan only covers up to 25 passwords. If you need more than that, you’ll need to opt for a paid plan, which currently ranges from $4.99/mo (billed annually)-$7.49/mo (billed annually).
- Easy to use and seamless
- User-friendly dashboard
- Easy to secure store payment methods and other important info
- Free plan limited to 25 passwords and one device
- Can only share passwords with other Dashlane customers

One of the stark differences between NordPass and Dashlane is how much they cost. For the paid versions, Dashlane is more costly per month than NordPass. The price range is not even close, as Dashlane costs over $3 per month more than NordPass for the lowest pricing tier. The highest price you’ll pay for an individual NordPass plan is $2.79/mo (billed every two years), while Dashlane costs $4.99/mo (billed annually) for the highest premium plan.
Dashlane’s best value plan also allows for unlimited devices and unlimited passwords, so this is a better option than Dashlane’s Friends and Family plan, which costs $7.49/mo (billed annually) and allows up to 10 users. To get NordPass’s best value plan, you must sign up for the two-year option, which can be a big step if you don’t want to commit to a long-term subscription. Still, at a cost of under $50 for two years, we think it’s a fair bargain.
Both plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee or free trial. You can take these password managers for a spin and see if they meet your expectations before you commit to a subscription.
Which password manager has the better features?
NordPass provides the overall better set of features, including digital legacy, more cloud storage space, and even email masking capabilities.

The major feature missing from Dashlane is digital legacy, which allows you to choose an emergency contact that can request access to your vault at any time. If you don't answer the request within a certain time frame, they automatically get access. While this is an optional feature, it's extremely helpful for your loved ones who have to take care of your admin work if something happens to you.
NordPass also lets you use email masking to help keep your personal information safe when filling out forms online.
Both password managers offer all of the other major features we look for, including dark web monitoring or data breach scanner and a VPN.
Which password manager is safer?
While both password managers are extremely safe, neither suffering from a data breach, NordPass does manage to squeak ahead thanks to its slightly more modern encryption.

NordPass uses xChaCha20 encryption, which is faster to implement than AES-256 and three times faster on platforms that lack AES-256 hardware. Dashlane uses the industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption.
It's always good to have an outside party check for security issues, because the proverbial extra set of eyes always helps. We found that NordPass conducts those outside audits, and the most recent one we saw data on was from December 2023. Dashlane also had an audit done to verify it met ISO Standards, which was published a month later in January 2024.
Which password manager has better compatibility and customer support?
Both password managers do well in this category, with NordPass coming slightly ahead thanks to a more flexible 24/7 support option.

Using NordPass was easy, from the download through the installation process. The online tutorial came in handy, setting us up for success in navigating our way around the interface and creating strong passwords. The password manager was intuitive, and the customization features like auto-lock were helpful to cut down on having to reset the master password multiple times while working.
The only small issue we had was that while using the free version, we did get prompted numerous times to upgrade to the Premium plan. That became annoying, but not enough to make us not want to use the password manager. We wanted to mention it because we felt others might be bothered by the same thing.
Similarly, Dashlane was easy to download, and the user tutorial took us through the steps we needed to activate the password manager on our device. The interface was user-friendly, and the password generator worked without any issues. It provides guides so that anyone can jump right in and understand how to use the product without needing a technical background to wade through it.
Both password managers provide email support and knowledge bases should you have any questions. However, NordPass has the upper hand since it offers 24/7 live chat support as well, so you can get help around the clock.
