Cloaked pros and cons

Cloaked is a privacy suite that scans 350+ data brokers and people-search sites every month and sends opt-out requests automatically. Its automations feature can extend removals to 650+ other websites, including retailers, health companies, and media brands that most removal services ignore.

The rest of the app is about prevention. You can generate unlimited phone and email aliases so companies never get your real details, block spam calls with Call Guard, and use the included VPN and password manager. Every plan gets identical coverage, so nothing is paywalled behind a higher tier. Cloaked also publishes its full removal list, which makes it easy to check what you're paying for.

But the trade-offs are real. The automations are a cool feature, but you have to do more heavy lifting to get removals processed than with dedicated data removal services. Similarly, Cloaked doesn't include custom removals, so you can't submit requests outside its specified coverage, and services are limited to the U.S. and Canada.

And we hit repeated glitches during testing: Email Guard failed to load on Android and iPhone, Call Guard didn't work with our tester's carrier, and canceling through the iOS app threw an error.

DeleteMe pros and cons

DeleteMe is a dedicated data removal service, and the focus shows. You fill out a datasheet during signup, and DeleteMe sends opt-outs on your behalf. You can also add more personal information to your datasheet at any point, so DeleteMe can extend its removals over time.

Quarterly privacy reports show every site that had your information, what it exposed, and how long each removal should take. In our most recent test, DeleteMe reviewed 624 listings and calculated that it saved us 6.5 hours of searching.

Custom removals set DeleteMe apart from Cloaked. If your data shows up somewhere DeleteMe doesn't cover, you can submit the link and a screenshot and have an advisor handle it, up to 10 times per quarter on Standard and without limit on Platinum and above. Plans also start lower than Cloaked's, and refunds are prorated based on the time left in your subscription.

The weak spot is transparency. DeleteMe advertises up to 986 sites, but the Standard plan covers 89. The rest sit behind higher tiers, several of them business plans, and you won't find that breakdown without asking support. There's also no mobile app and no real-time alerts.

Cloaked covers 350+ data brokers and people-search sites on every plan, and it publishes the full list so you can check it before you buy. DeleteMe's Standard plan covers 89 sites. That's the comparison most readers should make, because those are the entry plans on both sides.

DeleteMe advertises 986 sites, but that number folds in international brokers, custom requests, and business tiers. Among consumer plans, VIP tops out at about 262 sites.

But DeleteMe pulls back ahead when your data shows up somewhere neither service covers. It takes custom removal requests, which adds 10 custom removals per quarter and definitely more value to the multi-year plans. Cloaked doesn't, so you have to manually opt out of brokers and people-search sites it doesn't cover.

Privacy tools beyond removal

Cloaked's alias system stands out. You can generate a working phone number and email address for any signup, and everything routes back to your Cloaked inbox. The browser extension turns it into a two-click process on Chrome, Brave, and Edge.

Every plan also includes dark web and SSN monitoring, Call Guard, a mobile VPN powered by PureVPN, a password manager, and $1 million in identity theft insurance. Call Guard works with 40+ carriers and is supposed to help stop unwanted spam calls. However, most of Cloaked's bad reviews say the feature goes rogue and blocks all calls.

DeleteMe's extras are thinner: email masking, a Search Yourself tool that checks Google for your information, and phone masking for a one-time $7 fee. Card masking is also shown with these features, but it's been listed as "coming soon" in our dashboard across multiple test cycles.

How much work each one asks of you

This is where the two services really split.

DeleteMe is a set-and-forget tool. After filling out the datasheet, it runs quarterly with no input from you. Our first privacy report landed the same day we reactivated the account.

Cloaked's automations are the opposite. They run locally on your phone, one data broker pack at a time. We ran 41 of them, and while many took a single tap, others required confirming our information or completing a CAPTCHA. We also had to leave the app open while they ran. And during testing, we found that automations were only available on iPhone.

So that 650+ figure comes with a catch. Cloaked's 350+ broker removals happen automatically. The rest is closer to guided manual removal.

Which data removal service is more secure?

Cloaked is the more secure service overall, though DeleteMe is more forthcoming about one important detail.

Any data removal service needs a lot of personal information to work. You hand over your name, birthday, addresses, and sometimes your SSN so the service can find your profile on broker sites.

What isn't reasonable is when a service collects more data than it needs, shares it for advertising, or isn't explicit about its security measures.

Cloaked holds four independent certifications, including ISO 27701, which covers privacy management specifically. It also collects less than DeleteMe does: what it needs to run the service and find your data, and nothing for advertising.

DeleteMe collects considerably more, partly because of how it works. Its datasheet asks for employer information, relatives' names, and race and ethnicity data. DeleteMe doesn't sell user information and generally doesn't share it without consent, though its privacy policy does allow disclosure to government authorities when legally required, or as part of a merger or acquisition.

But DeleteMe is more forthcoming about its encryption, stating that it uses AES-256 and TLS 1.2. Cloaked says only that it uses end-to-end encryption with zero-knowledge architecture, but won't specify a protocol.

Cloaked has apps, and DeleteMe doesn't, which means our testing should favor Cloaked.

But with Cloaked, the Email Guard feature failed to load on Android and iPhone. Call Guard wouldn't work with our tester's carrier.

When we tried to cancel through the iOS app, we got an error message, so we emailed support. We never heard back and were charged for the next cycle anyway. The issue only got resolved when we finally connected with Kit, Cloaked's AI support agent.

Trustpilot reflects the same pattern. Cloaked sits at 3.8, with recurring complaints about setup problems and Call Guard intercepting calls and messages. Some users reported getting more spam calls after signing up.

DeleteMe was at 4.0 but recently dropped to 3.7. Some of those reviews appear to describe a different company with a similar name rather than the joindeleteme.com service.

Otherwise, Trustpilot reviewers mirror our positive experience. The dashboard is clear, the reports are readable, and when we emailed to cancel, support replied in four minutes and processed a prorated refund without pushing back.
