How we test and rate identity theft protection services
Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 10+ identity theft protection services using a consistent process. We sign up several days before formal testing begins, giving each service time to populate our dashboard with real monitoring data.
Then, we evaluate each product across six areas:
- Identity and credit monitoring (30%): We assess how comprehensive the service is, specifically checking for SSN monitoring, financial account monitoring, credit monitoring across all three bureaus, and more.
- Basics (20%): We review how many adults and children can be covered, as well as the maximum identity theft insurance value offered.
- Editor's score (20%): We evaluate the service's ease of use, security practices, the company's breach history, and anything else that's not addressed in the other categories.
- Value (15%): We compare the lowest and highest monthly plan prices against what's actually included at each tier. We also check if the service offers a free trial.
- Customer service (10%): We determine if there are several options available for human support.
- Extras (5%): We check whether the service includes additional tools we find valuable: dark web monitoring, social media monitoring, data breach alerts, and lost wallet protection.

Our experience
Setting up our IdentityIQ account was pretty simple. You fill out your basic information, like your full name, but you'll also be asked to submit your Social Security number (SSN), date of birth, and phone number to confirm your identity.
Once your account is set up, you'll be prompted to set goals you wish to complete with your membership. We liked that you can tailor your IdentityIQ experience to your identity protection concerns.
However, the score builder had an error fetching our data. This isn't the first time IdentityIQ hasn't been able to populate our credit information, which is an important feature for the service.
Once we set up our action plan, the only task we were given was to review credit card offers. Large sections of the main dashboard were also dedicated to upselling you on additional benefits like utility payment reporting and the Bitdefender add-ons.
Overall, IdentityIQ is largely intuitive but its dashboard could benefit from more information for the user rather than advertising prompts. We also wish the service was clearer about why certain features aren't working.

All plans above IdentityIQ Secure Basic include access to credit reports and credit scores from the three major credit bureaus, but the frequency at which you can refresh those reports is based on your chosen plan.
IdentityIQ’s Secure Max plan, the most premium plan, offers a credit score simulator and credit score tracker to give you more details about your score and how it's changing. It also comes with up to $25,000 in identity theft insurance for three dependents under the age of 24.

Plan comparison
IdentityIQ has four plan tiers: Secure Basic, Secure Plus, Secure Pro, and Secure Max. Many of the key components, like SSN monitoring and identity theft insurance, are included with all plans.
The plan offerings change when you look at how often you can access your credit report and how many bureaus are included in those reports.
Secure Max provides the most benefits. With this plan, you get monthly access to your credit report, identity theft insurance for yourself and three dependents, a credit score simulator, and fraud restoration with limited power of attorney (LPOA). An LPOA allows IdentityIQ to act on your behalf to remedy the issues of fraud.

IdentityIQ features
IdentityIQ’s features depend heavily on which plan you choose. The higher-tier plans give you access to your credit report more often, along with more advanced features like enhanced credit report monitoring and credit score change alerts.
All of IdentityIQ’s plans include $1 million in identity theft insurance and at least daily credit monitoring with one credit bureau. The highest tier includes additional features such as fraud restoration and access to a credit score simulator.
We do wish IdentityIQ included features like financial account monitoring so we could keep track of any suspicious activity on our credit cards, debit accounts, and savings accounts. And with all the credit features included, we're surprised IdentityIQ doesn't include the ability to lock your credit.
Identity monitoring
IdentityIQ scans a variety of sources for your SSN or other sensitive information. Identity monitoring alerts include the following:
- Applications using your SSN
- USPS address changes
- Criminal records with your SSN
- Personal information found on the dark web
IdentityIQ will also send you alerts if your information is found on the dark web or if your information has been used on a utility or other application.
Credit monitoring
IdentityIQ’s credit monitoring looks for the following changes to your credit history:
- Credit inquiries: These alerts will happen any time there is a hard inquiry on your credit, like from a bank or car dealership.
- Public records: If you buy a new property or something changes with your home, a public record alert may be triggered.
- New credit accounts: You’ll receive alerts any time you open a new account that would be listed on your credit report.
- Change of address: If you move or change your address, this will also show on your credit report.
- Delinquent accounts: If you’re late on payments or your credit card is overextended, you'll see a delinquent account alert.
Credit monitoring can help you identify possible fraud quickly so you can stop it before scammers can access more of your credit. It's important to pay attention to the credit monitoring alerts you receive so you can identify any fraud.
Note that not all of these alerts will be immediate. A change of address or a delinquent account may only happen when that account reports to the credit bureau, which is usually once a month.
Credit reports and credit scores
Your credit report and credit score include detailed information about how you’ve paid back your debts in the past, how much debt you currently have, and if you’ve paid those debts on time. Your credit report also shows any of your public records, your address, and other personal information.
Not including the Secure Basic plan, IdentityIQ comes with access to credit reports and credit scores from all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Depending on the plan you choose, you can access your credit report annually, biannually, or monthly.
Your credit score is also an indicator of identity theft. If you're monitoring your credit score often and notice a major change in your score, this can indicate a new account or change in your credit report. IdentityIQ sends alerts if your TransUnion credit score changes by more than 10 points.
Identity restoration services
Having your identity stolen is a difficult experience. In the event your identity is compromised, there are myriad of tasks to complete to help secure your information for the future.
IdentityIQ offers some identity theft restoration services, which can help ease the burden after your information has been compromised. It offers quite a few restoration services and consultations, including fraud restoration with LPOA and lost wallet assistance.
All plans also include up to $1 million in identity theft insurance, which covers the following:
- Replacement of funds stolen by electronic funds transfer
- Replacement of lost wages
- Approved lawyers' fees
- Reasonable and necessary expenses associated with ID restoration

IdentityIQ has a couple of extras, but they're all add-ons you'll need to purchase.

Does IdentityIQ keep your data safe?
Identity theft protection services require you to provide personal information in order for the service to work. Although IdentityIQ claims not to share any information without your consent, we read through its privacy policy and found some conflicting information.
IdentityIQ claims it may "'sell'/'share' personal information with third parties to participate in cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined by the CCPA. We may also 'sell' personal information, as that term is defined by the CCPA, to our Third Party Partners as further detailed in Section 6 of this Privacy Notice and in the information below."
Most ID theft protection programs we've reviewed outright state they don't sell your data. We're not sure why IdentityIQ decided to group the words "sell" and "share" together and why those words were put in quotation marks, but this raises concerns about the service’s data practices.
IdentityIQ is also vague about how it protects your data. It states that passwords are stored "in an encrypted and obfuscated format," but it would be helpful to specify if that's TLS or AES-256 for more peace of mind.
IdentityIQ compatibility
You can access IdentityIQ from any device via your web portal. The system requirements mention that IdentityIQ supports Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari.
There are also IdentityIQ apps for iOS and Android. Although they've had lackluster ratings in the past, the IdentityIQ apps now have ratings of 4.9 and 4.8, respectively.
IdentityIQ customer support
IdentityIQ is lacking when it comes to customer support. We searched for contact information so we could contact customer support, but we could only find a phone number hidden in the footer of the website. We also logged in to our account to see if members got a better customer support option, but we were redirected to the same phone number.
IdentityIQ customer service also has limited hours. You can contact them Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CST and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST.
We needed to call IdentityIQ to cancel our subscription. The customer support agent used scare tactics to read our dark web monitoring results and continuously tried to upsell us when we kept insisting on cancelling. While retention efforts are expected, we found the approach overly aggressive.
