Roboform and LastPass are two commonly mentioned password managers. A password manager secures all of your login info, so it’s worth checking out to keep your personal data safe. Yet, choosing the best password manager among all the available options can be a daunting task.

As of this review, Roboform has not been breached, while LastPass has had security issues as recently as late 2022, which could make some users nervous. On the other hand, LastPass offers dark web monitoring and a security dashboard score with its free version, while Roboform doesn’t.

So, when it comes to LastPass vs. Roboform, how do you decide? Let’s find out more about both of these products so you can get the one that best fits your needs.

When comparing Roboform vs. LastPass, we must mention the security differences right off the bat. LastPass has had trouble in this area; its most recent breach was in October 2022. Roboform hasn’t been breached, which is important since password managers are designed to store and protect your passwords and other private data.

That doesn’t mean Roboform is the better option. You won’t get features such as shared folders unless you opt for a paid plan. You also can’t share passwords with anyone unless that person also has a Roboform plan.

As you can see, Roboform and LastPass share some similarities, such as a free version, extensive web browser and desktop app compatibility, and military-grade encryption methods. With either password manager, you may opt for multiple login methods, including passwordless authentication.

Roboform supports authentication apps, such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. It also allows you to capture passwords while online and save them for later use. That way you don’t have to enter your credentials every time for websites you visit frequently. Roboform also offers autofill for logging in directly with the app. Similarly, LastPass allows for instant access if you use the LastPass Authenticator or other authenticators like biometric logins, rather than your master password.

Roboform and LastPass are both compatible with multiple major browsers, such as Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera. They both also offer standard password manager features like a form filler and a password generator. Roboform’s password generator shows you the password strength once it’s ready. LastPass generates a random, secure password automatically and saves it for later use. Then, either service can autofill your credentials across your devices.

Another similarity between these two systems is the encryption they use. Both have the standard AES 256-bit encryption, but Roboform and LastPass also use PBKDF2-SHA256, which makes it harder for an attacker due to the increased password-guessing attempts required. This process adds a “work factor” to the password hashing protocol, which is the iteration count. The iteration count is the number of times the hashing function gets applied to a password, making it harder to crack due to the number of computations it would take. You can think of it as trying to guess a specific number between one and a million. It would be almost impossible without taking a tremendous amount of time to do.

As far as pricing, LastPass is more expensive, starting at $3 per month. But LastPass gives you unlimited device access compared to Roboform, which allows only for one to five devices. You can also share passwords only on Roboform’s paid plans, whereas LastPass allows for password sharing with the free version.

Roboform’s plans start at about a dollar cheaper than LastPass. But at the highest price points, these two password managers are almost the same. The family plans are also similar, with Roboform allowing up to five users and LastPass allowing access to six members. With the Roboform Family Plan, you can sync your data across all of your devices to keep up with your credentials anywhere. With the LastPass Families plan, you can also use unlimited device types and sync data across all of them.

The features that come with Roboform and LastPass are similar. You’ll get the password generators, autofill, and two-factor authentication (2FA) with both. Also, you get emergency access and digital legacy, so your personal data remains safe in case of an emergency.

However, you should note that you’ll get digital legacy and cloud backup with Roboform only if you get a paid plan.

LastPass offers cloud backup if you use the authenticator app. With LastPass, you’ll get emergency access, dark web monitoring, and data breach alerts only with a paid subscription. All in all, you get the same features with both but will pay for certain ones depending on the password manager you choose.

Which is safer, Roboform or LastPass?

When we discuss privacy and security for a password manager, we’re being literal. You need to know how your data will be used and if the password manager has had security breaches. What kind of encryption is enforced to make your information more secure? Both of these password managers use the same encryption, and they both appear to take safety measures. Still, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the data breaches LastPass has suffered recently.

Roboform and LastPass both use strong encryption to protect data. Roboform employs AES 256-bit with PBKDF2-SHA256, while LastPass uses AES 256-bit encryption. Although both companies use strong encryption, we couldn’t find any information from LastPass on third-party security audits. On LastPass’s overview page, it shows that the company uses third-party firms to conduct audits, but we didn’t find specific dates. RoboForm, however, published a third-party audit conducted by Secfault Security in May 2023.

As of this writing, Roboform has not had any security breaches. LastPass has had several breaches, which make many users hesitant to use the product.

We do want to take a moment to recognize that LastPass was transparent with customers about the October 2022 breach and posted an update on its website regarding the investigation into the incident. The company took action and used security teams to mobilize the threat.

RoboForm vs. LastPass: compatibility and ease of use

Both password managers have clean interfaces that are easy to use on multiple operating systems and mobile apps. However, LastPass offers support for Linux, while Roboform does not. 

With Roboform, we found that it offered more than the website shows. Once we tested it, we found a section for compromised passwords, but the website doesn’t show that dark web monitoring is a feature.

With LastPass, we noted some of the links didn’t open once clicked. This happened during testing on our MacBook using Safari. We clicked on the Enroll button, but nothing happened. Once we went back to the Safari browser, we saw all the opened tabs. It seems to be a bit of a glitch, so be aware of this if you’re a Mac user.

RoboForm vs. LastPass customer service

The customer support options are not what we would call stellar for either Roboform or LastPass. Email is listed as an option for Roboform, which is supposed to be 24/7. However, it took us 11 hours to receive a response to a customer support question we submitted, so there’s no guarantee of when you’ll hear back from someone with an answer to your question.

We can’t say that LastPass is any better. There’s phone support for the paid plans but no email support. Even with the limited support features, you’re encouraged to use the support forums or online guides for help first, which may put some users off and we can’t blame them. A 24/7 live chat feature would be helpful.

Both password managers have good features. No matter which product you choose, you’ll get strong encryption and basic options, such as form fillers and password generators. We would’ve liked to have seen much more in the way of security audits for LastPass. Although they claim to use them, we couldn’t find the dates or names of companies performing the audits. Neither LastPass nor Roboform offers great customer support, with both encouraging the use of forums and articles if you need help.

All things considered, Roboform may be the best bet simply because it hasn't been breached (as of this writing). LastPass suffered not one, but two breaches in 2022. Until we see more data regarding how the company is fixing this obvious security issue, we’ll have to go with Roboform as the best overall password manager between these two.
