Surfshark Incogni removes personal information from data brokers and people search sites. However, despite being one of the best data removal services, it’s not perfect for everyone. Fortunately, there are enough alternatives on the market that it doesn’t have to be.

Our favorite Surfshark Incogni alternatives include DeleteMe (covers a huge number of sites), Aura (offers fully featured identity theft protection), HelloPrivacy (very simple to use), Optery (has a solid free plan and also scans a ton of sites), and Onerep (a well-rounded service at a competitive price).

We’ll get into the nitty-gritty details to help you pick the right one for your needs.

What is Incogni?

Incogni is a data removal tool from Surfshark — a company that’s well known for its privacy-focused software, including an excellent Surfshark VPN. If you want to remove personal data from the internet but don’t have time to reach out to hundreds of data brokers and people search sites directly, an automated tool like Incogni can help make the process significantly easier.

Pros
  • Fully automated, low-maintenance tool
  • Clear dashboards — information is easy to read and understand
  • Relatively affordable compared to other data removal tools
Cons
  • Few extra security features included
  • No privacy reports

The top 5 data removal alternatives

While we really like Incogni overall, it won’t be for everyone. Some users may prefer a tool with more features while others may want something with a free option to try out. Still, others may want something a bit more hands-on. Fortunately, there are plenty of options when it comes to data removal.

DeleteMe
Use code PARTNER20 for 20% off
  • Removes your data from the web to avoid scams, spam and stalkers
  • 100+ million successful opt-out removals
  • Provides continued removals every three months

DeleteMe is an easy-to-use data removal tool that’s ideal for users who want a few more features than Incogni — and don’t mind paying for it. It’s a solid middle ground between something like Aura (a full-featured identity theft protection suite) and Incogni (a super-basic automated data remover). DeleteMe offers plans for one or two people.

What we liked

DeleteMe offers robust data removal from a huge number of sites — over 750. Incogni, by comparison, only removes data from 180. DeleteMe also offers additional privacy features, like email, phone number, and credit card masking.

What we didn’t like

DeleteMe is one of the more expensive options in this space. DeleteMe doesn’t offer 24/7 customer support, which we feel is a miss given the price.

  • Excellent identity theft protection service
  • Includes a password manager and VPN
  • Robust tools for children’s security

Aura is a full-fledged identity theft protection solution, which sets it apart from the other options we’ve rounded up here. In other words, it’s a one-stop shop for online privacy protection. There are individual, couple, and family plans available.

What we liked

Aura includes a number of extra features that make it a one-stop shop for privacy. These include a password manager and a virtual private network (VPN). It also includes excellent tools for keeping children safe, such as sex offender alerts, child SSN monitoring, and alerts for threats received when playing online games.

What we didn’t like

There’s not a lot to dislike about Aura, but one gripe we had was that the credit monitoring only checks your VantageScore and not your FICO score. It also doesn’t provide any social media account monitoring, which seems like an oversight for an identity protection tool.

HelloPrivacy is a very straightforward tool that should appeal to users who just want to quickly scan for and remove data. There is a free version and a premium subscription.

What we liked

The straightforward nature of this tool makes it super easy to use. The free plan is a nice touch, but we really appreciate the month-to-month payment option. You can subscribe for a month to run a scan then drop back to the free plan until you feel the need to scan again.

What we didn’t like

The yearly price isn’t bad when compared to other data removal tools, but we don’t feel HelloPrivacy offers enough features to justify subscribing for a whole year at a time. We also had to do a bit of manual work to get data removed from a couple of sites during testing.

Optery
  • Has a free plan that finds your data on broker sites
  • Removals Report comes with screenshots to prove progress
  • AES-256 encryption isn't always used

Optery is an interesting option in the data removal space. It’s somewhat unique in that it offers a free tier, but at the same time, the paid subscription prices are among the most expensive of any data removal service. There are four plan options: Free, Core, Extended, and Ultimate.

What we liked

Optery’s free plan is a nice touch. It’ll help you find your data on broker and people search sites, and you can then opt out on your own at no charge. If you want to go with the paid options, you get some nice extra features, including the ability to automatically opt out of new data broker sites.

What we didn’t like

Optery’s paid plans get expensive quickly — you can easily pay several times more per year than what you would with Incogni. Additionally, while Optery uses AES-256 encryption on data at rest (not in transit or in use), it uses weaker encryption on data in transit, which may be a deal-breaker for the most staunch privacy advocates.

Onerep

Onerep is a “fully automated AI-powered data removal service” that claims to remove personal data from 199 websites. The service offers a brief free trial (five days) and then a choice of individual or family plans. It’s a well-rounded service that does several things well.

What we liked

Onerep’s free trial is useful to get a feel for the service, and the yearly pricing is in line with other options. We also appreciate that there’s a month-to-month option, although the price rises dramatically if you go this route.

What we didn’t like

Onerep doesn’t offer any extra features. You get automated data removal and a monthly email report — that’s it. Additionally, the Onerep website and help documentation are a bit sparse. We’d prefer to see a stronger online presence with more details about how the service works.

How to cancel an Incogni subscription

If one of these other services sounds like a better option and you’d like to switch, you can cancel your Incogni subscription at any time. However, the only way to do so is to send an email to the Incogni support team requesting that they stop automatic payments. The email address is support@incogni.com.

Incogni also has a 30-day money-back guarantee. If it’s your first month with the service, you can send an email to Incogni requesting a refund.

Incogni alternatives FAQs

+

How do I stop companies from collecting my data?

In some cases, you can opt out of data collection by rejecting cookies or denying app permissions on your phone.

Unfortunately, in the case of data brokers and people search sites, these tactics won’t work. The only thing you can do is request that your data be removed, which is where Incogni and its alternatives come in.

+

What is a data broker?

A data broker is a business or website that collects publicly available data about individuals or businesses, aggregates it into profiles, and then sells these profiles to other people or businesses.

The amount of data these sites are able to legally collect is astonishing — nearly any personal detail you can think of is fair game.

+

How can I remove my data from the internet?

Most websites that retain personal information have a way to request that this information be removed. You can also opt out of future data collection in some cases. The process is different for pretty much every site, and you should expect it to be a long and aggravating process, especially if you want to be thorough.

Check out our guide to removing information from the internet for help and tips.

Bottom line

If you’re looking to get your personal information off the internet but don’t want to use Surfshark Incogni, there are plenty of other excellent data removal tools to choose from.

DeleteMe includes additional privacy tools, and Aura is a powerful identity theft protection suite.

HelloPrivacy is a simple tool with a hands-off approach, and Optery offers a decent free plan. Onerep offers a good mix of features and cost.

Whichever you choose, you’ll be in a much better spot to protect your privacy and stay safe online when you use effective data removal services.
