I've used WordPress for 10+ years and wanted to share the best WordPress website builders with you. I've found that Bluehost offers the best overall set of plans, including a WordPress web builder, though Hostinger's tier-two plan has the best AI-powered WordPress builder. Both are strong picks depending on what you need.

Bluehost offers a well-rounded feature set that covers performance and security at every tier, with a dedicated ecommerce suite available on the third plan for businesses that need it. Meanwhile, Hostinger's AI toolkit includes the ability to generate pages, blogs, and images, plus an SEO assistant, among other features. It's the most comprehensive WordPress builder I've ever personally tested.

If you're primarily looking for cheap managed WordPress hosting and have limited experience with building websites, then you might want to consider WordPress.com. It's built and maintained by the company behind WordPress itself, and it bundles hosting, security, and automated updates into one of the most straightforward managed experiences on the market — starting as low as only $2.75/mo.

In the sections below, I'll break down each of these WordPress website builders in more detail to help you make a decision.

Who it's best for

Bluehost is best suited for small business owners who don't have an in-house developer or deep technical know-how and want a professional WordPress site. Every plan includes AI site creation tools, a free CDN, a staging site, an SSL certificate, malware scanning, and managed WordPress updates.

Plus, if your business is primarily or solely online, the eCommerce Essentials plan includes tools such as product subscriptions, visitor memberships, and paid courses. The one downside is that this plan can be cost-prohibitive for someone just starting out.

Bluehost site setup

What we liked

Feature-rich plans: What stands out about Bluehost isn't just what it includes, but that those inclusions hold steady across plans. Many hosts use security tools, staging environments, and AI features as upsell levers, gating them behind mid- to upper-tier plans. Bluehost makes them standard, which means a small business on a starter budget gets a similar setup to one spending more. The higher plans do add worthwhile extras, like malware removal and, eventually, a full commerce toolkit, but the foundation is solid at ground level.

Good WordPress AI website builder: Not to be overlooked, Bluehost's WordPress AI website builder is also extremely beginner-friendly and builds some sleek sites:

The results I saw when Dianna Gunn tested Bluehost for us impressed me — and I say that as someone who's worked with WordPress for more than a decade. Over the course of that time, I've seen, used, and tested a lot of WordPress themes, and in my opinion, the Bluehost WordPress site builder produces some simple yet effective designs.

Preinstalled plug-ins and Bluehost Marketplace: The dedicated Bluehost plugin connects your website to Bluehost, enabling easy dashboard management. In addition, to help new users get started fast, Bluehost includes preinstalled plugins for security and performance (Jetpack), spam protection (Akismet), and search engine optimization (Yoast SEO). During testing, the Bluehost Marketplace let us easily browse and purchase plugins, and like with Hostinger, we had access to WordPress.org's extensive plugin directory.

Performance: In addition to the above, what I appreciate about Bluehost is that its marketing holds up under real-world testing conditions. To be more specific, Bluehost's product pages lean heavily into how fast its web hosting plans are, but it's not just fluffy language: the numbers back it up. When Dianna tested Bluehost, she conducted three speed tests from Strasbourg, Montreal, and Dallas, and Bluehost scored a perfect 100 across all three locations. We've tested a significant amount of web hosts, and it's rare to see a straight 100 flush like that.

What we didn't like

Paywalled support: Given that Bluehost is a strong fit for non-technical small business owners, it's a little frustrating that phone support is locked behind the Business plan. The Starter tier is chat-only, which is fine for routine questions but less reassuring when something breaks at an inconvenient time, and you need a human on the line fast.

Limited storage on base plan: Another drawback of the Starter plan is that it includes only 10 GB of NVMe storage. That can work for a simple business site that lists basic information like opening hours, but it can fill up quickly if you're uploading product photos, video content, or building out a more media-heavy presence. Small businesses with an online store or a growing content library will likely need the tier-two Business plan.

Star rating summary

Bluehost WordPress builder earned a 4.5 because it delivers a feature-rich WordPress hosting experience at an accessible price, with tools like AI site creation, staging environments, and malware scanning included across all plans rather than locked behind higher tiers.

Bluehost received a lower score in the features category because phone support is paywalled behind the Business plan, and the base Starter plan's 10 GB storage limit can fill up quickly for media-heavy or ecommerce sites.

Hostinger: Best WordPress AI website builder

  • Cheaper than other ecommerce web builders like Wix and Shopify

Who it's best for

If you want AI to do the heavy lifting when you build your first (or next) WordPress website, then you want Hostinger — whether you know it yet or not.

Simply put, there are levels to this WordPress AI builder game, and Hostinger is the rooftop bar with a skyline view. Its toolkit makes it genuinely easy to build and launch a professional site, and at a starting rate of $1.99/mo, it's one of the most affordable hosting options on the market.

This combination makes it a natural fit for freelancers, creators, and early-stage businesses who need capable but inexpensive website-building tools. Just keep in mind that the full AI feature set is paywalled behind the tier-two Business plan, which starts at $2.99/mo.

List of elements you can add to Hostinger's AI web builder sites

What we liked

Complete suite of AI tools: Many WordPress builders that market themselves as AI-powered offer a base-level AI website builder that generates a site for you, but provide no additional AI tools beyond that. Or, if they do have any, it's one or two bolted on as an afterthought. Hostinger's AI suite is the epitome of "no stone left unturned."

In addition to the base-level AI builder, it also offers an AI writer, page generator, section generator, blog generator, product details generator, SEO assistant, and a logo maker. That level of thoroughness is hard to find elsewhere.

Specialized plugins: Bluehost, Hostinger, and WordPress.com all have their own custom configurations of the standard, bare-bones WordPress dashboard (e.g., wp-admin). Hostinger's version integrates Hostinger Tools and Hostinger Easy Onboarding, proprietary plugins that support onboarding and website performance.

Performance: In the performance department, Hostinger shines as well. I can speak to that directly because I tested it as part of our recurring web hosting retests. For the speed test, Hostinger scored a 99 across all three locations (Strasbourg, Montreal, and Dallas) from which I tested. That's only a point shy of Bluehost's flawless score and still extraordinarily fast.

What we didn't like

Access to all AI tools is paywalled: Hostinger earns its spot as the best WordPress AI website builder, but there's a caveat attached to its top position on the podium: none of the aforementioned AI tools is available on the cheapest Premium tier. If you sign up for the $1.99/mo plan expecting the AI content creator and WordPress AI troubleshooter, you won't find them — those are paywalled behind the Business tier.

Underwhelming Premium plan: For a product that's known for its AI capabilities, Hostinger could have left at least a few crumbs on the Premium plan table. The fact that the Premium plan doesn't include a CDN and uses older SSD storage is already enough of a downgrade without having to remove the AI features entirely.

AI chatbot only: Lastly, Hostinger's lack of phone support on all plans and heavy reliance on its AI chatbot for frontline support can be off-putting.[1] It's not a dealbreaker for most people, but it's not winning anyone over either.

Who it's best for

WordPress.com is an excellent choice for bloggers, first-time website owners, and budget-conscious creators who want a legitimate managed WordPress experience without having to navigate a separate hosting dashboard.

The entry price of $2.75/mo for a 3-year term is extremely competitive for a managed WordPress solution, and the features it offers — even on the free plan — will make you do a double-take. The quiet elephant in the room, though, is transaction fees. If you plan to collect payments on your site, take a close look at the numbers, as they are uncomfortably high on the lower-level plans.

What we liked

User-friendly WordPress dashboard: If you're new to WordPress or have never built a website before, WordPress.com makes a compelling choice for your maiden voyage. The reason is that it unifies the hosting and website-building experience into a single dashboard, colloquially known as "wp-admin."

In contrast, every other WordPress host, including both Bluehost and Hostinger, has separate control panels for hosting. The end result is that beginners end up having to scale two learning curves instead of just the one wp-admin dashboard.

Good WordPress AI builder: To make things even easier, WordPress.com also adds a powerful AI website builder and takes care of all your technical infrastructure so you can focus on other aspects of web management. A benefit of using WordPress.com is access to its extensive plugin library (though many plugins are arbitrarily paywalled). During testing, I used the Jetpack AI Assistant to generate images and edit text.

Performance and security features across all plans: Beyond its beginner-friendliness, WordPress.com stands out for how much of its performance and security stack is available regardless of which plan you're on. Even the free plan includes all of the following:

  • A global CDN with edge caching
  • Automated WordPress updates
  • Malware detection and removal
  • DDoS protection
  • Brute-force protection
  • A web application firewall

For a managed WordPress host at this price point, that's an almost too-good-to-be-true baseline, but in this case, it just happens to actually be true.

What we didn't like

Transaction fees: One drawback to WordPress.com is transaction fees on inbound payments. You might think that you're saving money because you have a cheap WordPress hosting plan, but depending on how much business you do and which tier plan you pick, the opposite could wind up being true. For perspective, WordPress.com's transaction fee is a hefty 8% on the entry-level Personal plan. When you add standard payment processing fees to that number, that's more than a tenth of your revenue skimmed off the top.

Performance: Another consideration is that when I tested WordPress.com a few months ago across the same three locations as Bluehost and Hostinger, it scored an 82. That's respectable, but noticeably behind Bluehost's perfect 100 and Hostinger's 99. What pulled the score down was largest contentful paint (LCP), which measures how quickly the LCP of a web page loads. In my testing, WordPress.com clocked an LCP of 3.1 seconds. That's 0.6 seconds higher than Google's recommended ceiling of 2.5 seconds for a good user experience.[2]

The culprit was an AI-generated image made with WordPress.com's native AI tools, which made me question why the company doesn't add automatic post-processing to AI-generated images to reduce their file size. It seems like a very obvious feature to have.

Limited customer support: Beyond those downsides, WordPress.com suffers from the same customer support issue as Hostinger: no phone support.[3]

Best WordPress page builders

If you've already purchased a hosting plan and have WordPress installed, your search for the best WordPress website builder is going to look a little different than someone starting from zero. You've already handled the hard part: At this stage, what you're really looking for is a page builder plugin.

The following options can be installed directly through your WordPress dashboard, giving you visual, code-free control over your site's layout and design. As a bonus, many of them now include AI features for generating content, layouts, and images directly within the builder.

With the exception of Divi, all of them are freemium tools, meaning they offer a free version with optional paid upgrades that unlock additional features.

  • Elementor: The most widely used WordPress page builder, with a free version that includes 40+ basic widgets and a drag-and-drop interface, and a Pro tier that unlocks a theme builder, pop-up builder, and WooCommerce design tools.
  • Beaver Builder: This frontend drag-and-drop builder is a strong choice for agencies managing multiple client sites, and is known for clean code output and stability.
  • Bricks Builder: A visual site builder that doubles as a theme, with built-in support for flexbox and CSS grid layouts, a WooCommerce builder, a query loop builder, and a pop-up builder.
  • Kadence Blocks: This block plugin loads only the CSS and JavaScript needed for blocks actually used on a given page, keeping site speed lean as you build.
  • Otter Blocks: A lightweight block plugin with a native AI block for generating layouts and content, plus visibility conditions that let you show or hide blocks based on user role, date range, WooCommerce cart status, and more.
  • Divi (premium only): A visual builder from Elegant Themes with an extensive library of predesigned layouts and a built-in AI assistant.

Bottom line: The best WordPress site builder

Bluehost is my top pick for the best overall hosting plans that include a WordPress website builder. Its well-rounded feature set holds up across all plan tiers, and its performance numbers back up its marketing claims. For small businesses that need a reliable, professionally managed WordPress site without a large upfront investment, Bluehost is the go-to.

That said, if you're looking for the best all-around WordPress site builder with comprehensive AI tools, Hostinger takes that title. Just make sure you're on the tier-two Business plan to unlock it.

For those starting from scratch on a tight budget, WordPress.com makes a strong case for itself. The flagship brand behind the iconic WordPress CMS hasn't fully worked out the kinks in its AI tools — especially AI-generated images — yet, but it has other strengths that far outweigh those minor issues. The website builder is solid, the managed WordPress features are hard to beat, and the unified interface, where everything lives inside the wp-admin, is an advantage for anyone new to WordPress.

How we test web builders

We use our proprietary grading rubric in all of our testing, which considers ease-of-use, design, price, compatibility, and features (among other metrics).

FAQs

Which website builder is best for WordPress?

This is a tough call because it depends on what you're looking to get out of a WordPress website builder. With that said, Hostinger's version casts arguably the widest net and makes a good fit for the vast majority of use cases. Its AI toolkit goes well beyond a basic site generator and includes an AI writer, page generator, section generator, blog generator, product details generator, SEO assistant, image generator, and logo maker — all built into the platform and backed by hosting infrastructure that held up well when I tested it.

Does WordPress have an AI website builder?

Yes, both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress(.org) offer an AI website builder. The WordPress.com version is native to the platform, while on the self-hosted side, you get multiple third-party versions. Each of them have their own unique quirks, but the basic premise is the same: You provide a written description of your website vision, and the AI builder will generate an initial draft of it that you can then edit further.

Can ChatGPT build a WordPress website?

The pragmatic answer is no. There is a nuanced caveat for developers, but the workflow required to pull it off is fairly complex. For most users, ChatGPT can't create or publish a WordPress website on its own.

ChatGPT can help with adjacent tasks like writing copy, suggesting site structure, or producing code snippets for custom features, but you'd still need a hosting platform with WordPress installed on it to get your site live. To leverage AI to speed up building a WordPress site, it’s much more efficient to use WordPress AI builders than ChatGPT.
